Standardized work is one of the principles in Lean Manufacturing. It requires three elements, 1. Take time: Rate at which parts or products must be produced to meet customer demand. 2. Work Sequence: The steps operators need to perform within take time, in the order in which they must be completed. 3. Standardized Inventory: (Or in-process stock) Minimum quantity of parts and raw materials needed to run operators. Benefits of Standardized work: 1. Reduces variability: * By standardizing the most effective way to perform processes, Standardized work reduces variations i the output. * Work becomes more predictable: Quality, costs, required Inventory and delivery times can be anticipated. 2. Helps your people: * Standardized work helps operators structure their work. It removes pressure on operators by reducing the stress of performing tasks improperly. * Standardized work makes training much easier since it documents the correct way to perform all processes. * It ensures that new employees are given all the information needed to perform equally with other operators. 3. Increases Safety: Standardized work, by definition, establishes the safest method to perform tasks. When operators use this, the number of injuries decreases and risks are prevented. 4. Your goal is to find methods that are practical, useful to everyone and free from difficulty. 4. Document Everything; Document the work procedure for ready references. You can use digital work instructions for easy access 5. Adapt your training programs: It is important that employees understand the new standards procedures and adhere to them. This might require re-training current workers. 6. Continuously improve the standard A common mistake is to think after establishing standardized work. You are done.
