In this video, I cover all of the basic info you need to know about standing desk, including the three major types of standing desks, sitting vs standing and tips for when you stand. Be sure to check out the article for this video at DIYNils.com/standing-desks and the related video on the types of standing desks available: Which Standing Desk is Right For You?
I’d like to thank FlexiSpot for providing me with one of their very easy-to-use FlexiSpot 35” risers. It’s the desk I use everyday at work. You can visit their website and learn more about their products at www.flexispot.com.
Other desks shown in this video include the Kangaroo desk (www.ergodesktop.com), the AdjusTables Series 7 (www.details-worktools.com) and the Ergotron (www.ergotron.com). I also showed my own DIY Riser, which works pretty well but requires two people to lower it back down once raised. With the cost of nicer risers like the Flexispot being as low as it is, I didn’t see a point in continuing to work on my own.
The apps shown were the Varidesk app for iOS and Apple Watch, but the one I really prefer right now is called Repeat Timer and is also for iOS.
The music for this video included three songs, all used with permission from the artists.
Song 1: 10K Special!
Song 2: I think about you - you don't think about me

This video was filmed principally on a Canon 70D using a Sigma 35mm F1.4 lens. Other footage was from iPhone 6 Plus. I use an AudioTechnica wired lapel mic for most audio. Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Hey Brett - yeah, that can be a problem. Try having a friend or family member come in and, depending on their mood and disposition toward you, either remove the legs from your desk to lower you safely to the ground or push you toward the stairs and tilt the desk. Be advised that your laptop or monitor can become a deadly impaling object in the latter case. Sending good vibes your way, my friend. Let's hope for the former. In any case, you'll be on the ground in no time. ;)

VERY informative; thanks Nil. Would it be an impractical idea to buy a desk that stands tall by default (ie. a drafting desk) and buy a drafting stool to sit on? Am I missing something here?

i use the timer on my Apple Watch 2. I hit 30mins when I sit down (i know it's not 20mins, but it works for me). When I stand up, i hit the 5mins on the timer as notice to let me know when I can sit down again. As time goes on, i'm will increase the stand time to 10mins, then 20mins, and finally to 30mins. Since I am using an anti-fatigue mat, i do find I go over my standing time ... but once i sit down, i hit that 30min timer again

hello, I`m a 3D game art student and I have to spend hours sitting in front of my computer and I have some issues with head, neck and eyes now after 2 years. To be honest I can`t afford to have 100 or above price of automatic standing desk converters at my home. So can u please help me with this. Is there any specific routine I should follow?
@LRN2DIY
@LRN2DIY 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Neraraj, in your situation, I would recommend trying a couple of things. 1) No matter what you end up doing, get up and move around every hour or more. Take a brief walk, stretch, etc. That alone will help quite a bit. While working, stand more than you currently are using any sort of a homemade rig - it could just be boxes or crates or anything else. If possible, move your monitor(s) to a lower surface like your desk surface later on in the day, or alternating back and forth from sitting to standing. Without a riser or sit/stand desk, this is a pain, but that physical effort of moving your monitors is a bit of exercise in and of itself, so not a bad thing. Best of luck!

thanks a lot.have started walking and stretching after every 20 mins for 10 mins and will surely get a way for the stand pose to work within few days.

You say you're eyes are hurting, have you heard of software called f.lux? I adjusts your screen colours to match the time of day. Makes looking at your computer much easier, but make sure its disabled if you're doing any texture work, because it will make your colours look different :P

What's more important, your health or having to scrape up some money? Here's what I did: Researched for the best chair, went on Craigslist, searched for the Aeron chair, saved the search so I got emails whenever that thing came up on CL. Months went by. Last Saturday, POW, a low mileage chair with most of the features, low price, excellent condition, a block from me. Talked to the guy (a corporate facilities manager) about my next goal: a standing desk. Told him exactly what I was looking for: hydraulic upsy downsy, adjustable keyboard tray, not too wide, will go way low. He tells me that oh, yeah, he has the last of the company's 40 desks EXACTLY LIKE THAT to recycle and hey, you can have it. He helped me load it, came over that night and helped me unload it and take it upstairs. Okay, okay, that's one in a hundred million, BUT CL does have a Free section, and even if that doesn't happen, you can find something cheaper than retail on CL or eBay or somewhere. That way, your investment is more time than money. Regarding the head health issues: Of all the advice in the video, the part about keeping your elbows under your shoulders at all times is THE most important. That will improve the head, neck, AND eyes. Not to mention seeing a chiropractor to get your spine and neck adjusted on an as-needed basis.

I don't, but I probably should make one. The reason I haven't yet is because I never finished it off. I used it for years but it always required two people to put the riser back down again, which is a real inconvenience.

The only problem I see is that most people who work in a high intensity state of concentration take about 15 minutes to focus. That means the time of focus would be 5 minutes and start the cycle again. I am sure it might work for some!

Finding a standing desk suited to you may be difficult. Have you tried raising the standing desk off the surface of the desk several inches (maybe with books or boards) and then seeing if it’s still a decent height for sitting? If that doesn’t work, I’d reach out to customer service of any desk you buy to see if they can accommodate you. A motorized full desk might be your best bet. Good luck!

Sedentary lifestyle is not treated like hunger, it is not enough to eat dinner to get full! Sedentary lifestyle is like malnutrition, treatment is done on time, without abuse and under close supervision. Weakening some muscles, and stiffening others, with a role in maintaining posture is the first effect of sedentary lifestyle, and before standing at the office, it is mandatory to balance the tone of your postural muscles.

I work in a very cubicle-dense environent, and many of the desks are powered, height-adjustable desks. Most of the staff on the floor doesn't use them, but there are a few who do. I can't even imagine working next to someone who raises and lowers their desk 3-4 times per-hour, every hour for a full day, as reommended by the study you cited. Working from home might make that possible, but having dozens to hundreds of people on the floor all "groundhog'ing" their desk height all day long, would get incredibly disruptive and annoying.

Be careful with this brand! I'm not talking about the quality of the products, but about the brand itself. Specifically, I ask all clients to be very careful with the brand's promotions since I and several clients have had some very unpleasant experiences. They carry out promotions without any kind of guarantees, commercial hooks that border on misleading advertising. When they are asked for the legal bases of the promotions that you have the right to access as a consumer, they do not provide them to you and despite admitting failures in the web shopping platform during the promotions, the solution they offer is to return the product . Sorry @flexispot but not everything is allowed in online sales, consumers also have rights, respect them.
