It's been very enjoyable watching your journey. Everyone likes to leave a tip & mine is that I prefer stainless water bottles over plastic because you can heat them over your stove if your water freezes. On freezing nights you can fill one or 2 water bottles with hot water, stick them in a wool sock, and then put them in your quilt. You'll get a few hours of extra warmth & better sleep.

Really nice narrative. The only tragedy of these AT journeys is that many people don't see how unbelievably gorgeous NC is is full greenery!

Brrrrrr..... be sure before you sleep to wear dry clothes next to your body. The sweat from the day clothes will make you colder. Enjoy your hike. Congratulations on 100 miles. You are doing great! Sharon and Tick

I’m enjoying your evolving vlog style: a shot of frost on your quilt in the tent is eloquent on its own; your later matter-of-fact commentary about the challenges of setting up your tent, dealing with frozen water bottles, and going to bed with no hot dinner underscored the need for resilience on the trail while your later enthusiasm for nearing and reaching the hundred mile mark was positively contagious. 😜 You’re compressing long days into meaningful vignettes that capture the essence of your experience. Thanks for bringing us along!

Frost buildup on the inside of a double walled tent with a mesh ceiling can leave the camper showered in ice crystals, too. A solid fabric ceiling in a double walled tent can collect frost as well, but, since the inner walls are not shaken by the wind directly, it's less likely that the frost will end up all over your gear. Vents near the apex of the rain fly help (Zpacks eliminates them to save weight and construction costs), but don't completely eliminate condensation or frost, most of which is generated by breathing out water vapor, and not breathing is not an option! 😊 Water, anything with batteries, fuel, are all negatively impacted by the cold. Sleep with those items to improve their function in the morning. Taylor, you're doing great! Keep it up! 👍👍

You're doing great. Such a positive hiker. No complaining. When it's cold... It's just cold. When it's raining.... It's just raining. You look well prepared. Happy for you 👣
@djg59504 жыл бұрын
I think she knew what to expect; cold and a LOT of rain in the southern Appalachians in the spring and came prepared for it. No sense in complaining about something you can't change. You are better off to view it as a challenge of what Mother Nature can throw at you and fight back. When it gets rough you can always slip into a town, eat tastier and healthier food, get a shower, wash your stinky clothes, sleep in a comfortable bed, and have a flush toilet ! That makes the struggle all the better. Then you move on, knock off some more miles, and repeat until you reach Katahdin.

Beautiful shots from the fire tower on Albert Mountain -- really clear. You can see why North Carolina is considered one of the most beautiful states in the South. Good to hear that you are feeling good and cruising at an average of 15-16 miles a day. At this pace, you will likely catch up to Wild, who is still ahead of you. Best of luck and stay warm!
