My wife bought one of these and couldn't figure out how to load a blade. So of course I'm going to come to her rescue, but this he-man looked it over and I couldn't figure it out either. So I resorted to reading the instructions printed on the packaging, and they were useless. I was about to use a splitting maul to open the sucker when it dawned on me to check out KZfaq. Thanks, OTR, for this video.

There is so many extra grips on this knife that it's very safe. You really can clamp your fingers safely on this one even the black rubber handle as a purpose not to lose grip. I chose this cutter because my index and hand can't slip towards the blade because of the bump: you can also hold it with the middle finger on the bump and the thumb on the rubber nub at the same height as the index it makes a very strong grip. I've seen too many people slipping the index on blades especially workers cutting carpets: the tip gets into the rug in a forward motion and it's very dangerous. the 3 cutting depths: 1/4", 5/8", 1" are very useful to use every part of the blade. I find the index rubber bump very good at the the 1/4" and 5/8" depths. The hole in holding bump at the end could hold a rope which can add an important safety aspect because in some situation you will jam the blade when cutting under a box with the blade up and the rope might prevent slipping when your trust. Also if you can control the accuracy cutting at 45 degrees with your knuckles which is very nice with carpets. I really enjoy the this utility knife. 1 drawback of this knife is that don't ever drop it on an hard floor because it might shatter the plastic case holding the extra blades it's not all metal like the other ones.

Thanks for your nice video, simple and precise. I bought the knife and didn't have a clue how this would work and change the blades, etc. Even though I look at the Stanley website, it didn't help me and the instructions (drawings) that came with the packaging didn't help either. Stanley should instruct customers better as this knife it is not cheap I paid £8.00.

That notch I think stanley have advertised elsewhere as being for shrink wrap mainly, something for which its damn useful. Sadly in my work place, knifes must be of the spring loaded type for which there are few decent ones made. Company just issues some cheap rolson product although I am using stanley fatmax blades in mine (rolson ones I need to take a knife sharpener too every 2 days, and of course we all know these blades arent designed for resharpening).

+SixSixSevenSeven Hmm, never seen that notch used for shrinkwrapping... Not sure how that would work... Maybe for clamshell type packaging that gets welded together these days and is impossible to open, or perhaps that what you are referring to?
@callumkingunderwood

OnlineToolReviews I worked in a warehouse for awhile, pallets would always have shrink wrap the entire way around, you could quite neatly tuck the notch over the top of the wrapping and slide all the way down without risking cutting the item inside.

I also dissatisfied and mailing them back to Stanley and take my purchase as a loss; buying different brand.

Hey guys. I saw this video while trying to figure out what the heck was wrong with my new replacement 10-788. No matter how hard I tried, I just could not get to the fourth position. Luckily, I had an old 10-788 around and took them both apart to figure out what was going on. Turns out that despite it being the same model number, there are some key differences between old and new 10-788s! Aside from some minor changes to the housing and plastic/rubber bits, the most function-related change is how to swap blades. Taking these apart, the older models have a small notch for the fourth position, while the newer models have a large piece of metal blocking the way, making it physically impossible to move into the fourth position. This is intentional, as that position no longer exists. The easiest way to see if you have a new or old model is to look at the yellow blade release button. If it's an oval, as in this video, you've got an old model. If it's more rectangular, you have a new model. If you have a new model, just extend the blade to the 3rd position and press down VERY firmly on the yellow button and the blade should pop right out, same for replacing it. Basically it's the same thing as before, but without the need for the fourth position, and requiring considerably more finger strength to really smash that button. (Presumably to make it impossible for it to pop out on accident with minor pressure.) Hope that helps people like me who have been confused after purchasing a new blade.

This is a very informative comment by Xbob42. I have the newer model. However, in spite of all of the help here, it is not possible to slide the blade into the proper position on my particular knife. One is required to slide the blade across a notch that is below the top of the blade and prevents it from sliding back. The notch is needed to hold the blade in when it is in the proper position. I took it apart, and can easily place the blade into the proper position by placing it in from a position out of the plane of the blade, but I see why it won't slide into position. You'd have to bend the blade in order for it to work and even though I am strong, I cannot do it, and I don't see how anyone else could, for that matter.

Thanks to this video, I found the blades. Took me 20 minutes to figure out that the slider had to be all the way forward for it to lock. Then when I went to use it, it wasn't locked. So I blew money on two storage bins because I drew lines on them to cut, and the knife won't cut because the blade won't lock. It will also not retract even though I slide the slider back. What a POS.

The instructions that come with this knife are completely inadequate. No mention at all of the blade compartment release. There IS a yellow piece of plastic that says "Remove" blocking it's access. You have to push the cheap plastic release well below the surface (luckily my thumbnail is much longer than it used to be) and then pull the hinged folding part out. I spent minutes just getting the cardboard out of the blade area. The instruction "To change blade" are a picture with "1" the sliding switch, "2" the yellow button, "3" the blade coming out. Of course the first time you use it, you have to put the blade in, from the unlabeled compartment. Not "instantchange" at all for the first time user. This is like needing a password you don't have. Not too hard if you have it, you are dead in the water if you don't. I only figured out how to use this thing from (another) KZfaq video. It may be a great tool for all I know.

Better have a back up knife if you plan to rely on this knife. Replacing the blade is a frustrating, time consuming delicate and difficult operation on this overly fancy and complicated version. It is made up of about one dozen parts, some of them small and hard to handle. Reassembly requires you to place all of the parts in place while you hopefully replace the screws, etc. Better have a good work space and some time on your hands. Other than that it's ok. It works well most of the time, except when the blade mechanism gets off track, at that point you will wish you had bought the less expensive knife.
@gatekeeper5939

this tool is designed NOT to be disassembled. blade swapping is simple and easy but the blade area needs to be kept clean....and "junk" that gets into the knife during blade retraction can gum up the internal workings and make future blade changing difficult
