He was one of a kind. A true artist of the highest calibre. He was the first person I ever interviewed for radio - and couldn't have been more generous of his time.

Stanley Baxter's characterization of the Queen was the best! Truly hilarious. I miss the comedy of the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks for posting this classic excellence.

He was the best of the best in my book for British tv comedy we have ever had he had one of the biggest budget shows and he was a well loved comedian and you just don't get that any more i liked him more over the great The Morecambe & Wise Show his performance was just outstanding more or less playing all the character's in all his shows and we had the dick emery shows another great comedy show they where so great back in the day

@@bioshock6935 To be fair to the artistes you mentioned, and many more from those times, it was truly a Golden Era. I loved Baxter, M&W, Emery, The Two Ronnies, Cooper, Brucie, Dawson, Howerd, Yarwood, Sykes, Allen et al. You were guaranteed quality entertainment. Stanley's shows were indeed the most expensive TV extravaganzas, I suppose that is why we only had one a year. An annual treat and not to be missed, and he had the best legs in showbiz.

I always looked forward to watching him on TV as a kid- such a talent. Fantastic as Jack Benny and all his other female roles.

Baxter had a unique, unrepeated style, it was simultaneously very gentle but yet quite acerbic & pointed, making it perfect for the whole family. I'm a little too young to remember it perfectly, but didn't he go to LWT or Thames (regional ITV) towards the end of his career & although the shows were still great, they kind of got lost in the schedules, so instead of going out with a bang at the Beeb, it seemed to end in somewhat of a whimper. I remember speaking to a TV exec who told me everyone loved him, but he was very exacting in the studio & his shows cost a fortune, which started to become an issue; I just hope that he was happy that he achieved everything he wanted in TV.

Stanley Baxter had worked for the BBC during the sixties, however his big success was with ITV. He joined London Weekend Television in 1971 and remained with them for 12 years, producing some of the highest quality and highest rated shows ever. By 1976 he was pulling in 15 million viewers per week. Come 1983, new management at LWT wanted to cut costs after their new franchise period started in January 1982, and this meant Stanley's show was axed, as it cost a fortune to make. In 1985 the BBC offered him the chance to make two Christmas specials with them and he ended his programme at Christmas 1986.
