Stanley is an American genius! One of the highlights of my life was to have a brief conversation with him as well as with the late George Duke (R.I.P.) in 2005 after their joint concert in Boca Raton Florida. Been a fan of both since I was in high school in the mid 1980s in Toronto.

Koen Klijnsmit Lucky enough to meet them, and later the rest of the band about three years ago in the afternoon before their gig at the Toronto Jazz Festival. Luckily, I asked a security guy if he knew where Hiromi was, and he said he couldn't say, but nodded his head toward a group of people behind him, about 30 yards away! They were very nice! Ronald Bruner Jr. hadn't even seen the CD (which I had brought with me), looked at the sleeve and said, "So, this is what it looks like!", before signing it!

I saw this similar show in Vancouver 2010 and this show here the band is really running on all 8 cylinders. Everyone is tight and all musical aspects are super magnified. In Vancouver it was a terrific show but Hiromi carried them it was probably early in the tour. I recall 2 moments that the crowd was going mental with Hiromi's outstanding musicianship. I think in the 2nd tune she took a solo and when complete the crowd was standing and the tune had way more to go lol she also blew our minds in the encore with her left hand solo chops as she used her right hand to act as the rhythmic foundation. reversing the traditional roles. It was trule shock and awe.

Most people have no idea of the number of killers on bass that are either born in Philadelphia and it’s surrounding areas or spent their formative years there. Stanley, Jaco, Alphonso Johnson, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Victor Bailey, Gerald Veasley, Percy Heath, Jimmy Garrison, Reggie Workman, Henry Grimes, Buster Williams, Charles Fambrough, Christian McBride, Gail Ann Dorsey, Jymie Merritt, John Lamb, Arthur Harper, Tommy Bryant, Tyrone Brown, Spanky DeBrest, Wayne Dockery, Lee Smith, Howard Cooper, Jimmy Bond, Mathew Parrish, Steve Davis, Nathan East, John Lee, Julie Slick and there are surely more.

+Dan Edmiston Well, it's always been that way. The majority has always gravitated toward lightweight music with very little harmony, and even during that time of Return To Forever there were a lot of horrible bands that seemed to get much more attention. Even wonderful mainstream bands like Earth Wind & Fire didn't make it to the charts until much later. Not much has changed now. But I understand your comment. But because of the internet there's so much good music now on the market and so many underground groups of music listeners that there's perhaps a new golden age on the rise. :) In fact, now you can learn about Debussy, Satie, Bach, Duke Ellington, Joe Henderson, Gainsbourg in one sitting, there hasn't been a time like this. No wonder so many new wonderful musicians are truly showing up these days like Jacob Collier.

I liked how they treated Black Narcissus as well, very quiet to start off with but intense. Great treatment of the tune. Shows that one does not have play everything super fast and super loud to elicit excitement. Nice drum solo, switching form brushes to sticks midway - very musical and the chords played softly behind the drum solo made it tastier. Well done all the way around!
