I have also followed hydrogen as an alternate fuel for a long time. I too think electric is the wrong path, especially since we will need to build more generating plants that will pollute even with nuclear. Governments are on a popularity road without thinking it thru. I’m afraid that we will be stuck with electric until the downside becomes apparent about the costs of those ill informed.

Key points for batteries not being ready are: power sources ie many stations on grid using "dirty" power or running on diesel generators and the battery charge/discharge cycles and the rate of power capacity decline over the expected lifetime. Batteries ie energy storage is the future but lithium is capable of all we need.

There are huge problems with hydrogen and why it isn't mainstream already. The first problem is where do you get it? Most H2 produced today is made from natural gas. If that is going to be the source you are better off just using the NG directly. The alternative is to use electrolysis to split water into H2 and O2 using electricity. You lose about 30% of the energy in the process. Then you have to compress it to huge pressures to be able to store enough to be useful. That loses another 10-15%. You lose a bunch in the fuel cell, then runa motor that loses 5-10% to run a hydraulic pump that loses a bunch. At the point of the electric motor you only have about 25% of what you started with. The longevity of this equipment is unproven and won't likely last very long. The fuel cells in particular, and they are mega expensive. The tanks are an explosion hazard and H2 is such a small molecule that it seeps thru many solid materials like steel. Which actually weakens the material (search hydrogen embrittlement). If the gas ever leaks, it has a very broad flammability mixture range with air, making it far more likely to ignite that other gases we are familiar with and burns nearly invisibility so you don't see the hazard. And I just saw an article stating it actually makes warming worse. Bottom line, we have to be pretty desperate to really be using it. Currently it isn't doing anything to help the environment due to the poor efficiency and where we get it from.

@@Dirtmonkey Yeah it's a HHO generator they sell them on Amazon=( Fuel Saving Kit HHO DC3000 for Cars) I just watched a review on it by a reputable KZfaqr and apparently it doesn't do anything in that configuration set up. When I wanted to do it years ago it was just a thing on KZfaq people were rigging up with Mason jars and fish tank hose which is why I was skeptical about doing lol.

I see that. But Volvo is only making 11 of these. So they are projecting much demand either I would guess.

Also yard environments would do extremely well with these kinds of equipment. 4hrs continuous run could be a full day intermittent easily. Notice he was saying these are not meant to replace an excavator that just gets dropped in a field. The real question is how much further does the tech need to develop before mass adoption takes off. If they cut that charging time from 1hr to a 30 min lunch break, it'll be really compelling. And the way these tech things advance that could be next year or the year after.

yes- battery is perfect for those fleets but at the parking station their has to be an ENORMOUS charging station to refuel all those batteries. A milwaukee tools rep explained it best to me. He said that if Disney world switched all their trucks to electric they would have to have a reserve battery (charging station) the size of a 3 story building 75 feet long. NOT POSSIBLE!

I've never had rocks get between the panels. And, my machine is muddy.... Often! lol They're pretty thick plexiglass, too. The one pain in the ass part is they get pretty scratched up after hundreds of hours, or so, and sooner if you bounce rocks off of the door alot.

Hydrogen fuel cells have been around for decades, the problem is getting the hydrogen,still not readily available.

They all break. so its about parts and service.

​@@TheGibby13 Thing is, those aren't generators. They are just a battery pack. So now you have to wait for it to charge, then take it over to your machine and charge it. They should just have swappable batteries with an actuated coupler system.

"hard sell" doesn't describe it even partially. that is a guaranteed 20% downtime, at best. And I still say there is absolutely no way to fully charge a piece of heavy equipment in the same time it takes a car to charge that cant even go 300 miles.

Let's b realistic. The manitu door will b several thousand to replace and it's way over complicated. To many moving parts. Plus little peddles will build up in the groove. The kubota door is tried and true tech that hasn't really changed in 20 or more years. (Just a modified excavator door). I will say the big downside to the kubota door is DO NOT LOCK IT IN THE WINTER. mine always froze. Lol
