Correction: my ti frame is not made in the UK, it's made in Taiwan. Stanton is getting their ti frames built to their specs in Taiwan, to their tubing specs, in order to meet demand.

I have the previous version of the steel Sherpa, so 853 made in Taiwan. The welds look pretty much like your ti bike. I hate to say it as a Brit but the British built Sherpa doesn’t look as good as the Taiwanese versions in terms of welds. The colour of course is stunning.

I didn't realise their geo numbers were at low travel sag. On paper their relative steep HAs have put me off. Good to hear the true numbers and your take on their build ethos for achieving the maximum ride suppleness they can get away with. You've done a much better job of selling their frames to me than Stanton ever have, top work!

Details like the tire comparison are why your channel is the one I trust with my patreon dollars. As a grad student pinching pennies, I just can't afford to get experiMENTAL. I'm scrounging nickels to get the spokes and finish up my 27.5*3 wheelset for bikepacking. Its great to feel secure that when I do eventually have the resources available for a new frame down the line I'll know my hard saved wheels and other components will transfer over, because you've done the work to get out the information. Thanks for the vid.

I've been waiting for you to review the steel Sherpa! Looking forward to hearing your views. I have a 17" 4130 (in metallic grey with mint green decals!) and currently have it set up as a mullet with 2.6 Schwalbes both ends on Nukeproof Horizon 30i wheels. Initially tried it as a 29er but found the mullet was a lot more fun (I'm 5'5" so small rear wheel just feels right). I'm also running a 130 Pike (it's what I had) so the HTA is pretty slack now, but I haven't noticed any wandering uphill--in fact it climbs like an ebike. I slammed the stem and have high rise (38mm) bars and it feels spot on. It's such a fun bike on techy descents and is super easy to manual. Enjoy!

Hi, Just bought the Ti version. I have it built up but not given it a proper blast yet, but it does look amazing. The main point in contacting you is to find out where you were riding in the videos for the comparison of both the Ti and steel and in the other video where you compare the Taiwan and UK steel. The trails look amazing and I need to put in on a trip sometime in the future!

After riding full suspension bikes for years I bought a Get 1 Switchback in steel. I liked it so much that I bought a second hand Ti frame and sold the steel one. Lovely frame and perfect welds. Only thing a didn't like is that I could only get a 2.35" 650b wheel in it, looks like they've sorted that out. The fork I had let it down as well I'm sure, a very divey Fox CTD. Wish I still had it sometimes.

I will definitely consider this one as a bikepacking bike, because I've been back and forth quite a while on what will suit me the best. The possibility of tire choice is also a very big bonus, so you can experiment on one single bike. Love it. Personally I still won't consider gearbox + beltdrive drivetrain because I still think it weighs too much, and I also refuse to have gripshift. A regular drivetrain will do the trick.

Thanks for your deep dive into high quality hardtail frames. As we know ride feel goes beyond frame material and goes into the micro details of tubing butting, and shaping etc. A frame designer can source brand names like Reynolds but the devil is in the details. It’s not easy to manipulate tubing “in house” and sourcing those ultra butted and shaped tubing is limited and costly, especially with Ti.

Of course mtn bikes today are designed for more rowdy riding than those 26ers from the 90s, but an old Breezer steel frame would be only 4.3 lbs and aluminum would be even lighter.. So I was a little surprised that the 853 frame was 5.8 lbs

That's the lightest steel frame I've had in yet for review. Bikes are a lot beefier these days, with slacker head angles, more travel, more leverage on them with bigger tires, and trails that demand a lot more of them. It used to be that steel bikes were almost as light as ti bikes.

Such beautiful frames. Just think of Stanton adding the logo as a customer service bonus. Customer service, though not something you often talk about when reviewing, is still relevant to any review wherein you can talk about it.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 3 жыл бұрын
True, but there's a reason i don't mention customer service too often in my reviews. As an industry insider, sometimes i get special treatment. I speak with the owners of the companies and the designers of the bikes. I get higher priority responses. In most cases, i get the same exact customer service as any regular joe, but in some cases I get special treatment. For that reason, i try not to comment too much on customer service since I'm not a regular paying customer. In cases where i interact with a company and don't tell them who I am, i will definitely mention customer service.

What is the max fork travel you would use on this bike? I wish that more companies would make it much more clear as to how HTA is measured. I had written off the Sherpa until I heard what you said about 67* after sag measurement... Also like that it can take a larger tire too. Sherpa is back on the radar for me now. I'm eagerly awaiting the other reviews and comparison. Hope your finger is doing okay (even if these videos are from way before that).

Most companies will state on their geo charts whether it's measured at sag or not, but a lot of people miss it. I believe it's rated up to a 130mm fork. If you're wanting more travel than 130mm, check out the switch9er

That 853 looks a lot like a modern take on the Niner MCR (the original one, not that dumb FS gravel bike) which is a good thing.

Great channel and great review...how would you rate the steel Sherpa versus the Niner SIR 9??

I answer that exact question in the upcoming review videos. Stay tuned...

@@hardtailparty Insert emoji of *excited person waiting for something cool* (thanks!) I ordered a SIR 9 from Niner months ago but the heat death of the universe might occur before I receive it. So the Stanton looks like an attractive alternative. PS: I really like your channel...keep up the great reviews.

@@hardtailparty I've definitely been considering it, but I am such a novice rider that just about anything will work for me as long as I don't go overboard. I've reached out to the folks at Stanton about the Sherpa vs Slackline and that convo is alive and kicking! I'd definitely love to get your input regarding my terrain, riding style and hardtail you think might fit my needs, so I will likely hit up your pattern for some final thoughts. I figure the $30 is well worth the large amount of info you've provided through countless videos I've watched. As a matter of fact, let me go ahead and set it up so I can contact you now lol! It's all I'm thinking about anyway lol!

Do you remember what length stem you ran on these? Stanton says it’s built around a 35, but yours looks longer than that here. Reason I ask is that mine feels cramped with a 35, wondering if the steering will be affected by going longer. Thx.

Would be nice to see all the hard tails you have ridden on a wall as art. Mmmmmm

That would be rad and require a huge wall. Unfortunately, i have to send almost all of them back after the review.

Is the Mint Green 853 steel yours? IE did you buy it? Or is it just for review? Anyway, nice looking bikes. How is the stack height on the Stantons?

No doubt Dan Stanton knows what he’s talking about. Furthermore, he has a positive way of thinking about the environment. Can’t wait to see your review, although it sounds like you already have an opinion…

Sometimes my excitement in the first look is mirrored in the review, and sometimes I feel let down when I actually ride this bike. On paper, I love this bike. We'll see how it actually rides soon...
