For YEARS I have wondered what the inside of the abandoned NASCAR track North Wilkesboro Speedway's buildings looked like. There were countless drone videos and images over the years showing the track surface, grandstands, etc. I have NEVER seen the inside of the original control tower, press boxes, or Winston suites. We showcase all of that once and for all with first hand history from Ronald Queen (who basically grew up at the track). We check out the infield buildings, backstretch grandstands, concession stands, everything you have ever wanted to see!
Huge thanks to SMI for enabling us to make this video!!

North Wilkesboro feels like the Field Of Dreams of Racing. An amazing facility that exists in a location that is uncommon and doesn't seem like it's quite real. I feel like I would be metaphorically pinching myself over and over asking myself if I was really there. "Is this heaven? No, it's North Wilkesboro." (I think that would make a good T-shirt idea)

I was 17 and I was very sad that it was the last race at north Wilkesboro. For me it kinda was the start of a slow down in watching nascar. As you could see what was coming with the money going elsewhere when it should have stayed here the whole time. If nascar come back to north Wilkesboro I hope they stay until there is no more nascar.. It is sweet to see that they have pretty much a full schedule for August and October of 2022..

Hey guys, thanks so much for giving us an in-depth look at these 2 awesome historical NASCAR venues & tracks (Rockingham & N. Wilkesboro). They’re literally a time capsule of NASCAR’s glory days and a very good status reference in the tragic event that they’re completely renovated beyond recognition or possibly even gutted for future mid-level NASCAR racing or even trucks/Xfinity down the road. These tracks have so much genuine historical importance and significance, it seems such a sad waste that today’s NASCAR executives haven’t spent the money or even taken a moment to invest in it’s really cool history. It’s a shame they only focus on “forward,” but there are MILLIONS of us old-timers that refuse to allow them to disrespect their glorious “checkered” past. I collect historically important NASCAR memorabilia, and I know I’m not alone. We can NEVER forget where the sport came from if we’re ever going to support where it’s going! Thanks again for the great content. It’s really appreciated.

I have soooo many memories of going to this track when I was a kid.. My parents, other family members and my best friend would usually leave Friday and go camp for the weekend. Ive been to a lot or races growing up and throughout my years but I can say 100% without a doubt the most fun I/we ever had was at North Wilkesboro.. after the race was over on Sunday I couldnt wait for that gate to open so we could run down on the track and to the infield to try and get pictures and autographs... The first time I ever saw/got to meet Richard Petty was there.. He was setting in the covered garage there in the infield in a metal fold out chair signing autographs... I was probably like 10-12 years old and its a vivid memory I will NEVER forget... I have a ton of old pictures that we took there, now I need to try to find and dig them out lol. Back then I didn’t realize the historical significance of all the tracks we raced. But today looking back it seems to mean so much to me to have been around those places and to be in the presence of those that have become my greatest hero’s. It was great to see Wilkes Speedway, it brought back many memories. I was born and raised in Taylorsville, still live here, right between Wilkes Speedway and Hickory Speedway and I love seeing young folks taking huge interest in their history. Keep up the great work and by all means, take good care of that awesome young lady you have by your side. So much respect to you both. Monnie. When North Wilkesboro closed, I was 25 years old and was livid about them closing down this track. There were so many better choices to take away dates or have a few more tracks with one date to keep this track operating. But when Bruton Smith I believe bought Wilkesboro I knew it wasn't good.i new it was going to be the end because he owned Charlotte motor speedway and Atlanta I think too and want more 1/2 mile tracks and needed the dates to do so. It crushed alot of southeast fans that loved Wilkesboro racetrack racing. Devastated north Wilkesboro to lose there races and track like that.Bruton Smith became a hated man back in the late 80's and 90's.. So don't no the whole story about it reopening and what there going to ha e there again but it's great to hear anyways.

Yeah Mitchell, I turned 50 back in ‘96 and my oldest son told me I had officially achieved old man status. Wasn’t much into the NASCAR racing but enjoyed the local dirt tracks. My main interest was NHRA until they got so commercial it became hard to watch. Got rid of satellite tv and got into watching KZfaq and people like you and Logan. Been around since before you got the Newell.

Really enjoy your video's, keep up the good work! Stuff like this specifically, documenting history from day's past. When the last Winston Race happened at this track I was 33 years old. Priceless that you where able to get a guided tour from someone that was around back in the day, that really knows the history.

It's awesome that the place is getting brought back to life instead of getting left to continue rotting. I didn't enter this planet until 1999, so I don't know much about the place, but I'll definitely visit if I'm ever in NC

On the one and only trip I made to North Wilkesboro I used the men's room you recorded. I was born in 1967 so seeing a "trough" style urinal wasn't new to me, (we had them in an old Gym at my elementary school,) though they had become very rare by then. While using the facility a guy and his young son stepped up and the dad said "All his life I've been teaching him not to pee on the floor but here that's what we do!" The kid waited for his dad to tell him it was alright about three times before he went. That was the last year North Wilkesboro hosted a sanctioned NASCAR event. Thats one of the reasons we drove up from Charlotte. I like your channel, but I'm not much of a gearhead. Keep up the good work!

I was at the last Winston Cup race here. Being from Daytona, it was crazy how small the track was compared to DIS. Still the only short track I have ever been to. Stopped by a few weeks ago when visiting family in Statesville and was so nice to see work being done.

I was shocked to learn that Wilksboro closed in 96. It truly shows how time flys. I believe that they had 2 cup events per year. I'm 55 now and was privileged to watch what I believe was Nascar's best years, mid 80's till a few years after Dale seniors death. The first generation cot was bad, then the big air foil on the trunk cars were truly the beginning of the end for Nascar. But very glad you guys made this video. Seriously seems like not that long ago I was watching North Wilksboro in a bar somewhere. Lol

How old was I in 96? I was 22. I've been a Dale Sr fan since 1983 when I was 5 years old. Remembered watching him win the first union 400 in 87. Man he was on a roll back then. Thanks for the video, great place, glad its being restored.

My 1st North Wilkesboro race was this past Sunday I wasn't fortunate enough to see the original hard chargers like Gordon Earnhardt or petty beat and bang at this track but thanks to classic footage and videos like this I'm able to be informed of these Glory moments and I WAS fortunate enough to enjoy it's glorious return

I’m actually from North Wilkesboro this is the first time I’ve seen y’all channel it was awesome to see the history of that track before it gets remodeled I’ve been there once when I was younger they held a whole day of racing before closing it permanently. It really makes me really excited for it to be reopened in August and October then finish the rest before 2023. Thanks for the video on everything about history to have something to keep some of the history I knew about some I didn’t.

I was 28 when the last race was run there. Hand painted signs would be awesome. I am so pumped that NASCAR is going back. Years ago I spoke to Buddy Baker and Dave Moody on the NASCAR program through Sirius Satellite about North Wilkesboro and Rockingham coming back. They both at separate times said there was no way. I grew up watching races at those tracks.I can still remember watching NASCAR race at the Riverside Road Course here in California. I can't wait to see the first race. I heard its also going to be a Dirt Track at first which is amazing to me because I love dirt track racing. Not too long ago Dale Jr had that track scanned for the video game. He and a bunch of people went out and cut all the weeds down that were actually growing out of the track surface. Even Dale said it was to far gone. Thank you for doing this video before all the changes'

I spent time growing up going races twice a year at North Wilkesboro Speedway. My dad raced dirt track before I was born. I can remember back in mid 60’s seeing all the drivers bring their cars in on the old open trailer with tires on a pipe stretch across the front of trailer. We use to go in the infield at day break and dad back up to the fence the kids would play football in the infield until it got crowded. One of my memories is all the driver’s sitting on the back of their cars signing autographs after the race . Richard Petty would sign autographs until the last person. I have pictures I took from a 110 camera from the infield going into the 3rd turn Cale Yarborough driving the #11 and Dale Earnhardt Sr. Driving the Blue and yellow #2 for Mike Curb racing. this was 1978 or 1979. It took a while but both drivers autographed it. Great memories. Glad you guys are videoing the track as it was the last race that I was at. Glad to see it will be a race track again.

Visited on August 2nd for the Revival -- Track still races great with multiple grooves. I plan on going back! The steel framing from the Winston Suite structure remains even though the suites/control rooms have been taken out. The backstretch stands have been torn out entirely until Turn 2, yet the press box/suites structure still stands in its entirety. This really is a beautiful facility with a lot of character.

I was 11 when North Wilkesboro closed. I was really big into Nascar back then because of my grandfather who was more like a father to me. He passed away unexpectedly on 5/22/97 and my interest in racing kind of fizzled out after that. But thanks to these videos I'm regaining that interest. Crazy timing with your upload.
