Forever will be peak Star Fox for me. The multiplayer was fantastic, story was great, and imo the campaign had a lot of replayability. Shame that the more popular titles just use the same plot as the original over and over again.

I think if Star Fox was to try and become a bigger series (or at least charge full price), they need more than just the on-rail sections. Although Assault didn’t have enough on-rails levels, the game definitely felt like it was taking a step forward for the series. Only to end up regressing.

Aw man. I used to play Star Fox Assault multiplayer ALL THE TIME at my cousins house as a kid. Me and my brothers would go toe to toe and it was so much fun. Nowadays, they only play hardcore shooters only and I’m still a Nintendo nerd but this game would always have a special place in my heart.

I was shocked when it got access to the internet and I saw that every reviewer out there hated this game. It has incredible music, a dark story, memorable levels, and so much more! I’ve played countless hours of the multiplayer mode with my friends. I never minded the on foot stages, and I think it’s the most logical progression for the series. I feel like a first person Star Fox game would be awesome, but I’m not sure if Nintendo will ever give the series a shot against

I really hope they expand open this and add a large online battle component. Imagine 30 starwings, land masters, and foot soliders battling it out in space or an alien planet

This was where the series peaked in terms of gameplay and story. How this hasn't been the go to formula for the series is beyond me. The story is fresh, the gameplay fun, and as always the multiplayer is a ton of fun.

This game is a gem. Had fun with friends back in the day. Some living some gone. It’s a gem to me at least. For the memories alone. And the gameplay isn’t bad either.

They need to make another one, I could only imagine what the game could be in today’s standards and tech. Especially the online potential and character customization and just have this planetside 2 type warfare.

I remember liking this game as a teen, so nice to see it get some love. Kinda sad the series never got online play though. Dogfighting in general is fun, but there wasn’t much room to do it like there is in say, Star Wars Squadrons. Which was barely supported and matchmaking had problems (and people stopped playing).

Holy cow I loved Assault and I still kind of do today it makes me happy that there are still weirdos who review and look back on this and realize how great it is granted I never got to play the multiplayer due to me being a bit of a lone wolf but I still enjoyed my time with it. Also fun fact the character design of the Klonoa series worked on Assault as an artist and as a Writer

This game sorta reminds me of Kid Icarus Uprising. Both are games that try to subvert expectations by reintroducing a threat from the first game, just to then surprise you with an even more deadly and interesting threat. They both have on-foot sections with many different weapon options but are still commonly referred to as the worst part of the game. The characters feel so much more fleshed out here compared to where they were before, even giving the original rivals a sorta redemption. The music is all orchestrated. Both games feature many cinematic set pieces. Both games feature a competitive multiplayer mode. The bigger difference between these games, however, is the fact that Kid Icarus actually does so much more than Assault. Like, the story and gameplay of Kid Icarus just has much more to it. There's, like, achievements, way more weapons, multiple difficulties, more memorable villains, and I can go on! That's why Assault is a game that will probably leave many people feeling unfulfilled.

I love Assault and Adventure. Adventure had a beautiful atmosphere and super cute dinosaurs. Assault was a super cool romp through the stars, feeling like my own personal Starwars adventure!

"Totally real GameCube systems" can do multiplayer games pretty well. I've done some porpoise based Mario Party 4 cross country before. Just saying.

I'm so glad so many people recently are starting to realized Star Fox Assault is good game. I actually like it more than Star Fox 64 imo still one of my favorite games of all time Nintendo better port this hidden gem to the Switch.

i loved this game as a kid- i had it at my cousin's house and we all used to play it for hours. when we stopped actually fighting we used to use the multiplayer maps to essentially make our own machinimas

I'd always thought that a fast paced hybrid rail-shooter-third-person-shooter would be a great evolution of Starfox gameplay. I tried Assault for a first time a few years ago, and to be honest I didn't like the on foot sections very much. Even with the second control scheme it felt dated and clunky. Even then I remember the dinosaur planet level being fun to explore and the few on-rails levels felt great. I really want a studio to try this style again though with some more modern sensibilities. The on-foot sections actually reminded me of Earth Defense Force in a weird way, those games might be fun to try out if you haven't yet.

I think it's the last great Star Fox game. And one of two in general. I hope Nintendo continues the series from THIS point in the timeline.

I loved this game. I remember getting it on Easter and playing multiplayer with my one friend. I thought getting out of the r wing was cool. Especially on the missions where I could choose to get in the tank or ship. Not to mention how cool it was being on wolf’s wing shooting down enemies. 64 may be the best game but I still like playing 1 and even Star fox 2 now that they put it on switch. Adventure was ok. I stared it up again but doesn’t have that charm still that it use to. For me at least. Hell I even liked zero though definitely wish could make it control like old games.

This game, Double Dash, Mario Party 7, Halo 2, and CoD 3 were the games of my early childhood. Loved the mix of on-rails, on-foot, and free-roam missions. The world designs were beautiful, but the music...the music... Star Wars prequel tier music.

The only thing I found hard to use was the little tank. That was it.

Really good video and I feel like this game was ahead of its times in terms of its ideas. If it comes out on switch either on the online service or a full remaster then it can truly show its potential. 64 is not the only good starfox game. Also there is another way to switch weapons in the dual stick controls. The d pad allows you to cycle through the weapons to the next one and the previous weapon. Just a side note.

Star Fox Assault is a run and gun game, if you play the first level coming from SF64 then youre like “its a little slower paced maybe, but it looked awesome and that new enemy looked vicious” then you go to Katina outpost and youre using the stupid ass Single Stick control scheme, then youre gonna think its ass. But if you use the Dual Stick scheme, it becomes a fast paced (if the blaster was Semi Auto with mashing like the Arwings it would be SO much better) Run and Gun type game. If this game were made today, or if a sequel were ever made, that just makes this style of game but better and with many QOL improvements (weapon wheel, before mentioned Semi Auto Blaster) and maybe even some sort of RPG element added (weapon upgrades, Pilot upgrades,) with SF:0’s Routing and LOTS more stages (cmon lets leave the Lylat System Nintendo) different objectives (thinking similar to something like metal gear w/ stealth), it would be a godly Star Fox game, and more people are buying games now than ever, if monster hunter can go from a niche title to a home genre like it did with world, then star fox can have it’s big game as well. I’d say this game alone has opened the floodgates of possibility with this game. Just because of the ground portion, that opens it way up and you can still have your on rails arwing sections. Hell even do something like an on rail Pilot (ground) section where youre running to escape something i dont know. Basically, this game has left the series in a spot to where it can be anything it wants to be, and its criminal that Fox (and subsequently Falco and Wolf) are mostly known for their appearance in smash bros.

I really hate that I'm probably one of the only people in the world who genuinely enjoyed this game. I didn't mind the foot sections because the spectacle and voice acting was always so engaging. I do think that it could have benefited from having more On Rail sections. Despite this I have to say that I miss when Nintendo took more risky opportunities by making games that were geared towards an aging audience as opposed to dumbing down all of their content

I loved this game as a kid, and I argue it still holds up, despite what others may say about it. Can't really say I appreciate the #notmystarfox treatment people would blindly give this game, because that's why we ended up getting Zero. And it failed so miserably, even the people who ARE fans of Zero couldn't save that trainwreck. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the Metroid Prime series, and those fans really seem to want a Prime 4. Point is, you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette, and some people will just never see that.

Star Fox assault should've become the game that made this franchise Nintendo's Halo, it has NO business going under like this.

i played this game without knowing anything about controversies and all, as a teenager and i had a blast of time playing it, is the star fox game that have played the most and i remember playing the multiplayer for hours (if you play in team battles you could jump into the arwing of your friend and shoot like in the mission where wolf helps you through corneria (you can fall tho)

Tbh, this game looks awesome! If they ported it to Switch (or it's successor) I'd definitely pick it up.

I love assault. I played the living daylights out of it and thought it was great just 64 had more levels and was leagues ahead of Adventures which was essentially Zelda and dungeons and fantasy didn’t feel right. And Command was ok but was suffering from early DS games requiring the touch screen to do EVERYTHING.

Fist star fox game I ever played was adventures as a kid it got me hooked and have played most of the games except this one and zero when i found assault at a vintage game store i scooped it up they only sold almost about 900k copies but it’s rare to come across now days I’ve had it for a couple years but haven’t touched it yet due to a backlog of more modern games

i loved assault. at the same time though, i feel like it was bordering on false advertisement. when you saw this at a demo stall in stores, it would be the first "on rails" mission which likely fooled many into thinking the whole $50 game would be like that, which is a shame. i definitely spent many hours in the multiplayer trying to grind for the ultimate weapon unlock... pretty sure it was a sniper rifle or something

I really miss this Franchise I liked Adventure but Assault was far much better loved every minute of it the story the characters, the adventure was all phenomenal really hope one day the series will come back and be brought back to life I really wish assault got a lot more love and was appreciated more because this could’ve been what the Franchise should’ve become in the future instead of us getting the disappointment that was Star Fox 0 RIP

My problem with Assualt is that there isn't enough of it. 3 on rails missions and only 10 missions over all. Give us 10 on rail missions with a the on-foot stuff mixed in to make 20 missions plus some extra modes and it would have been my go to Star Fox game. It's really too bad Nintendo screwed up so bad with Zero, they think we don't like the series any more but we just want a good game. Give us a mix of 64 and Assualt and we'd be happy.

Personally I love StarFox Zero. yes, the movement controls on the new vehicle they added was complete trash, but if you ignore that one major flaw it’s truly a masterpiece of a remake.

man this is THE best Star Fox game to me, it was a step forward to the series, Star Fox could not be kept stuck on rail sections, also, even when i played this game as a kid i was aware of the legendary status of star fox 64 so i played it with my mind open really expecting it to become my favorite and beat star fox assault....star fox 64 is good, i still play it on my 3DS but hell no, it isnt better than assault, it does feel restringed in comparison and i can tell it was nostalgia talking on behalf of the people back then, Assault is what the series should have kept aiming for a building up and evolving

I was disappointed with Assault and the one after (or just before?) on the DS because I was expected to explore more planets like in Adventures. I loved Adventures as a tween (teen? What year did it come out? I was 14 for Assault). I find it boring now, but I'd still love to see Starfox lore expanded on. Arcade shooters weren't popular anymore by the GameCube, that's why people didn't like it much. Add online co-op and it'd probably do very well today, though. It would have done well in the previous few gens of consoles, too. But the early 2000s era was about story lines. Shooters started making a come back with the rise on online gaming.

This video honestly has me questioning if i played Assault with the default ground controls the entire time as a kid. I remember hating those segments with a burning passion, but was that innately how it was, or was i just being a dumb kid.

if the game had much less onfoot missions, better onfoot controls and way less sensitive cam/aim, and much more forgiving time limits, I'd say it would have been received much better and I'd liked that a lot.

Yes Luigis M was great. The other 2 are gash, I went back to them both years later only to find out I still don't like them. Unlike Starfox Adventures that I'm currently playing, that game is a solid Zelda clone. But despite buying it day one in 2002 I always hateded it, untill now..

I hated this game when I was a kid, I bought it for 50$ back then which was like 75$ now and beat the game in 6 hours, i was like 10 years old. It was such a disappointment.

So for me: Starfox, Starfox 2, Starfox 64, Adventure, and Assault are good. Command & Zero are crap. Though i feel kinda iffy on Assault. I did play it as a kid. Loved CERTAIN aspects of it. But disliked others. I do remember feeling overwhelmed and confused by the on foot bits. I think assault was a step in the right direction. But was not executed well enough to have the success it needed. I do wish SPECIFICALLY Nintendo would get over themselves and stop forcing motion control gimmick sorta crap. And just make a simple friggin game with smooth as butter controls. Cus zero could have been so much better without the game pad motion control.

I think you're bound to be more open minded when you didn't grow up with something. I myself look at this game and I don't see Star Fox. I do like the idea of being able to walk around, but it should be more of a gimmick than a part of the actual game play.
