As a wounded Army veteran, I prefer the true story. In the truth is that we were smarter and tougher than the british, and we had the high ground. The bombardment lasted for 27 HOURS. We did not sit there overnight dying holding the flag we were too busy shooting back. We fought. Only 4 Americans died at the battle for Fort McHenry. There were no women or children. The song is about the fresh clean new flag that we raised that morning, as a big middle finger to the British as they sailed away.

I'm an old Lady now, but as a child in the 50's I proudly stood in my classroom, hand over heart, facing the flag & reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, every school day. Living only several miles from Ft. McHenry here in Baltimore, my family often went there on the 4th of July & sat on the grassy lawn with our picnic lunch, before once again touring the interior. I treasure our photos taken there, esp. 6y old me astride one of the cannons used during that long ago bombardment. Thank you for the respect you showed by doffing your hat & laying your hand over your heart as the Anthem played.❣

Right now people in America want that Flag down because of everyone dying and i feel bad for them because i just feel like when i hear the ending it makes me cry everytime like it's almost like the Future isn't coming yet like the Past really hurts when you think about it..i just feel depressed from all the chaos that has happened....im really sorry if am you know..

Every country needs a 'creation myth' on which to base its national identity. But when you manufacture that myth by embellishing real events with fictional details and fictional sacrifice, you are taking away from the real sacrifice made by real people. Almost everything in the original video is false. In fact the description admits this, and suggests that people look up the real story. The problem is that everyone who sees this video now thinks of "the men who died holding the flag", when in fact the flagpole (which was actually a 75 foot tall repurposed ship's mast) suffered no damage; *nobody died holding it up* , as that would have been a physical impossibility. Nobody will remember the four real patriots who died: artillerymen Lt Claggett and Sgt Clemm who were manning a cannon that received a direct hit, militiaman Charles Messinger carrying water to the outer perimeter, and militiaman Thomas Beeston hit by shapnel. That is the corrosive result of warping real events into myths - it's another version of stolen valor.

After watching this, it answered a question I always had about this song, "Why do we sing it in the form of a question?" Why are we asking if it still waves when we clearly can see that it does, well yes we can, but those that gave their life for it are not here to see how it turned out, we are singing it for them. Did I die for nothing? Or is the flag still there? I saw a quote once that really struck home it said "The American flag does not wave because of the wind, but rather from the last breath that every soldier gave dying for it." My 2nd favorite, "If you do not want to stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them!" God Bless you and thank you for your service.

I’m ashamed to admit that I’m 58 years old and although I respected the flag because my daddy was a war vet and he taught me to respect it, and I knew all the words, I didn’t think what it meant. All I knew was that it is our National Anthem and I needed to always stand up and be respectful. I never understood the meaning of the words. In fact when I was younger, I didn’t understand why America The Beautiful wasn’t our anthem. It made more sense to me. Fast forward to a few years ago when certain sports players would “take a knee”, I told my husband that I didn’t understand why people were getting so angry about it. To me it wasn’t disrespectful to our country. It was a silent protest. My daddy had passed by then…thank God. Then around a year ago I watched this video about how our anthem came to be. I cried and I apologized to the men who gave their lives to make sure that “our flag was still there”. It changed the way I felt about the players took a knee. I no longer feel that any American has the right to live in the land of the free and then be disrespectful to the flag and to our anthem, which has gotten me in screaming matches with idiots who will talk, not stand, not remove their hats etc. I wait until the anthem has finished. My husband said One of days you’re gonna get yourself in real trouble. Oh well. I never heard this story in school but I should have. And it should definitely be taught in schools NOW!!

I am 64 years old and come from a military family. I learned this story in first grade. Every day, the entire school would stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance and then we would sing the National Anthem. We learned why you never let an American flag touch the ground and why we take off our hat and place our hand over our heart to pay homage to the men that risked/lost their lives for the freedom that we enjoy today. We learned that Americans do not kneel to our enemies or to the British royalty. I take tissues with me every time I go to a sports game because every time I hear this song, I cry. Thank you for your service. God bless!

I showed it to my 13 yr old daughter and was pleasantly surprised that she already had good knowledge of this important history, however we have the privilege of living within a great school system/community. We should NEVER forget the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms. And the flag should always be respected.

I come from a relatively big military family. My grandpa in ww2 my uncle some cousins my brother. I thank you and all vets for their service. It is a tremendous sacrifice. I will always stand on my feet. I will never kneel in front of that flag.

I've watched probably more than 100 people react to this video from many different countries most of them , American. You are the FIRST American to remove their hat and place your hand over your heart during the national anthem portion of this video. Thank you for that , and thank you for your service to our country. Video liked.....CHECK. Subscribe and bell click....CHECK. I'm looking forward to more great stuff. A You tuber by name of The Fat Electrician (who was a combat medic) comes to mind. He does great stuff , if you love American military history with some comedic flair this is the dude. In my eyes he is the history teacher I always wanted.

Sir, your reaction to this video touched my heart deeply. Especially the part when you INSTINCTIVELY took off your cap & immediately put your hand over your heart, as soon as the Star Spangled Banner started to play, caused my eyes to tear up & feeling a large lump in my throat. I was on color guard on board the USS Sacramento when we dropped the flag. I was horrified. Not my finest moment. God bless you. Peace.

The anthem's history began the morning of September 14, 1814, when an attorney and amateur poet named Francis Scott Key watched U.S. soldiers-who were under bombardment from British naval forces during the War of 1812-raise a large American flag over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.

My family came to the States in 1635, fought in this war and all others after. I was told this story at my Grandma's knee in the 70's, she told me and it is documented, my G+ Grandfathers brother died on the British ship after being captured, the conditions were brutal and they threw their captives overboard, they were lost forever. She even showed me areas in the town that were taken by the British before they were pushed back. Was told about how the hymn was written by a Lawyer during the battle and to have pride in our flag. It tears me up to see people disrespect it, the only ones who can burn the flag is the boys scout when it's tattered, they have a ceremony for it.

When I was in elementary school back in the 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner from memory. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not go ashore as the tide was out. He could do nothing but watch as the other British ships (never learned how many there were) attacked the unnamed American fort. The next morning when he saw the American flag still flying above the fort he was inspired to write a poem that was later put to music that we now recognize as the Star Spangled Banner. We did not learn about any conversations he had on board the ship or of him visiting the fort. This next part is something I once read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 to 30 years ago. I’m doing this from memory so please excuse me if I make a mistake. In the early part of the 20th century the United States of America did not have a national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was only one of about four or five different songs that the American people were asked to vote for to be the national anthem. For many of the American adults the Star Spangled Banner was the last song on the list that they wanted to be the national anthem. The American people wanted the American government to stay out of the conflicts that were going on in Europe and Asia during this time period and they viewed the Star Spangled Banner as a song that glorified war. As for the other songs they could have voted for the American adults could not agree on which one song should be the national anthem. As this was not an election to select a political candidate or some issues school children, many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country, were allowed to vote for which song became the national anthem. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it received more votes than any of the other songs on the list, after it was ratified by the American government it official became the national anthem for the United States of America in the 1930s.

I believe it's their judges that still do (maybe some in Parliament; I've got to go look now b/c I can't remember & I can't stand not knowing 😂). Thank you for reacting to this. We need to remember & teach our children about the men & women who sacrificed their lives for our flag & our current freedoms! This is why we do not let our flags touch the ground or disrespect it. Too many people weren't taught to respect our nation, & it's sad. Scary that that is many in our government. They've worked for decades to bring our nation to its knees from the inside, which is where we are now. The majority need to rise up, raise our kids right, & speak up. Thank you for speaking up on the things that you do in some of your videos.

You are absolutely right. It should be shown in every school across this country. I recently took my Grandsons to a local cemetery to show them the grave of there Great Grandfather who served in WWII. While there we walked around. We could see small flags on many of the graves. I taught them if they are in cemeteries to look around and if they see those flags on the ground to make sure and take a few minutes to stand those flags back up as a sign of respect.

I just had to comment about this video. Today, I've watched this video several times but by nonamericans from Sweden, Britian and South Africa. Each one stated that they all wished their countries had such pride. Some even said their countries just don't feel the same way. They all teared up watching too. Now that's saying something. This story should be shown at the beginning of the season at each sporting venues. Just once. OUR people must see this and understand why we do not let our flag fall to the grown. God Bless America.

Some church hymnals do have it, some don’t. I haven’t heard it sung in church in many years however. I assume it goes to the ‘separation of Church and State’, to keep the clergy and world churches influence in government limited. I’m a fierce patriot from a family with rich and storied military history. I think this video, this history, should be shown to every American school child as part of the curriculum. Too many of us forget what really happened to bring us the freedoms we take for granted.

When you see certain people who are *BLESSED* enough to live here in the U.S.A. and PLAY SPORTS, but some players refuse to stand up for OUR 🇺🇸NATIONAL ANTHEM.... they're acting like spoiled entitled children & their actions are VERY DISRESPECTFUL to all of the *BRAVE* men & women who gave their lives & limbs for our FREEDOM! love this story, I love my country, I wish it was accurate. Several points: Frst this was during the war of 1812, not the revolutionary era as this narrator suggest. He is a pastor enphasizing the romanticism of the event. Second: their where about 20 small and large Brittish war ships ( tec. still enough to take the fort) not hundreds. This is just after the burning of The White House in Washinton. The Brits were attacking Baltimor, but the city defenses had halted their progress. So they wanted to enter the city from the ports, but had to pass Ft Henry. Third: the fort had 1000 soldiers and some civlians to help man the fort. ONLY 6 were killed along with several civilians in the conflict. Fourth: The mission of the lawyer was to get the release of a Doctor who was very popular in Baltimor and get a prisinor exchange going if possible. Fith: The anthem was written as a poem and later in the 1930s lyrics where added by a German author (Not sure here) and it became so popular that it was then made into our anthem. The narrator of this version of events later put out an explination of its accuracy. He just was trying to justify his take of events. I still hold that this country is the best in the world and we don't have to embellished our history. However, the most disappointing statement was that of George Washington quote. That quote is credited to a Mexican Revolutionary called Zapata. His men would always call it when they would be line up for execution (firing squad). You can google it. Great story, I only wish it was accurate.

I fully agree with you on this! I grew up in the countryside on Oahu and in our Catholic schools we were taught the a small part of this in our history books. So I knew the basics and I always had a special place in my heart for our flag as I think it is unique and stands out. But always for anything patriotic and always taught to stand with my right hand over my heart. But then again, I am over 60 years old, so that was back then. I also knew that any American should never let the flag touch the ground! I am not sure what they teach about history these days?! Francis Scott Key first wrote it down as a poem later they changed it to our National Anthem song lyrics and now sthat paper isin the Smithsonian museum and so is the flag!❤😢❤😢

Those were wigs, yes they were all alike. It's what they wore while in Congress. They didn't otherwise. But it's why they all look alike. It's a throwback to England's customs in Parliment

I dislike the embellishment of '100's of ships'.. there were on record 19 or 20 in the fleet. But in context that was a huge armada. Ships costs fortunes to build, stock, and man. Still the shelling continued for, on record, 25 hours straight. I do imagine the fatigue, mental and physical, of both sides. Navy Veteran myself.

I learned the story in elementary school - small Southern towns are a little different, plus it was before entitled athletes making more money than most Americans will ever come close to making, decided that disrespect of the flag and the anthem was the thing to do.

Those are powdered wigs, a custom that they adopted from the French and British, ironically. A lot of countries did. It was to hide baldness. 14:04

This is the war of 1812. The British had guns that would reach much farther than the Americans. The Americans realized that they were just wasting ammunition. The bombardment went all night. This is the battle that was the turning of the war and Americans won in the end.
