I would advise against reading the book. Get the audio version instead, as it’s narrated by sirpatstew himself, and hearing the emotion as he tells some of those stories is incredibly touching

My favorite story was with him working with Vivian Leigh when she was performing in England. Apparently, Stewart was playing a bit role (mainly holding a battery-operated lantern with no lines). However, in the middle of Leigh's monologue, the power went out in the theater. Stewart immediately turned on the lantern and walked up alongside Leigh, giving her the proper lighting to finish her performance. He got high praise from Leigh for quick thinking. Although they didn't become close, when the entire cast was invited to the re-release premiere of GONE WITH THE WIND in London, Stewart was invited to sit next to Leigh.

Patrick's friendship with Ian McKellen is absolutely charming and endearing.

In case folks have forgotten, Sting is also a classically trained tenor. He's recorded albums of Renaissance madrigals and, from a friend who performed with him in LA, he's a really nice guy.

I was surprised by Stewart's mention in the memoir of him living in a haunted house while working on Star Trek. He came home and someone, who was staying there, said a book had flung itself across the room. Stewart regularly felt like someone was watching him. Later, he met the owner's of the house in some public environment, and they admitted to the haunting. Eventually, Stewart's agent or publicist alone at the house became fed up and shouted something like, "Go away, leave us alone! We don't want you here anymore!" and since then the hauntings stopped.

I had the privilege to attend his book tour’s London event, and I was so impressed by his humility and genuine joy of being there.

I became friends with Pat when we worked together on a show at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Better than you can imagine, very present and kind. We formed a little comic book club, he borrowed my copy of “From Hell”. I’m looking forward to him retelling Brian Blessed stories. He told me about how Brian had a reinforced suitcase that he kept a set of weights in. Brian acted as if it was a normal suitcase in weight and then see how long he could go without laughing when the hotel bell hop would struggle to budge it, let alone lift it as if this suitcase was the Hammer of Thor.

Since Excalibur is one of my favorite movies, I must throw in his performance there as well.

So glad to see “I, Claudius” in there! One of my all-time favorite pieces of media!

I want him to do another book. One thing I wished he could talk more about; interviewing and being interviewed is an art form, and some of Stewart's early TNG promotional interviews feel pretty stilted and rehearsed, where he's still nervous about being in the spotlight. Whereas these days, he's fun and interesting and a delightful guest. I would love to hear how he learned to enjoy talking on camera, and the other interviewee skills along the way.

I attended London and saw him in person! Read the book now listening to the audio book narrated by him. Having read the book already doesn't take away from the truly amazing experience of hearing him narrate his memoir. I'd say do both or just the audiobook, and I'm a massive print or e book reader. His is actually the first audiobook I've consumed and I'm blown away by hearing him narrate from the heart!

While I wouldn’t necessarily advise against buying the book, I DEFINITELY recommend the audiobook! Listening to Sir Patrick narrate his life story is engaging, fun and really gives you a sense of his life, coming up from a working class family. You can really hear in his voice his appreciation for the good things he’s had, and regrets for things that went perhaps not so good. And it is full of humor, like when he talks about meeting that bassist in the “police band”…

Wow! He sure had a crazy adventure with that show and in life!😅

Loved the book! So amazing that he rose above such poverty. He could have easily have gone worked in the mines or in a shop! While I found his theater years fascinating, I was hoping for more Star Trekish stuff. Then, again, that's what sequels are for...

I got this book for Christmas and have just finished reading it. Loved it, unsurprisingly, and have waited till now to watch this video!

One of my favourite TV actors ever! How about Stan's boss Avery Bullock on American Dad?? Great voicework and hilarious lines! Some of the stuff that character does and says is just outrageous. lol I'd love to hear Patrick's take on that character as well.

I listened to almost the entire audio version of "Making It So" on an 1850-mile family trip this Thanksgiving. It was delightful, fascinating, and often quite moving. As such, I would advise getting the audio book in addition to - or even instead of - the printed book. Hearing Sir Patrick relate his story in his own voice is, I imagine, a far richer experience than merely reading it on the page. One clarification about the notorious wig: The way Sir Patrick relates it in the book, he was advised to bring his wig with him when he came to the ST:TNG audition. Unfortunately, he had left it in London and had to have it shipped to him by air. He had to go to the airport himself to pick it up. On the morning of the audition, he went to the Paramount studio gates and was told that he could not park on the lot. A woman in a car behind him walked up to the guard and said, “Don't you know who this is? He has a huge audition today. Let him through!” Without further protest, the guard let him through, though Stewart did not know who the woman was. Before the actual audition, he went to a makeup room where, lo and behold, he found out that his champion at the gate was the woman who would be doing his makeup and fixing his wig! She had been given a head shot of him in advance, so she recognized him, and he thanked her profusely. He actually did the audition with the wig. He had worked on two scenes with the director, of the pilot Corey Allen, in advance of the audition, and Corey read with him in the audition. However, after he got through the first scene, the executives said, “Thank you. That will be enough,” and they let him go. Stewart said that he was afraid that he had blown it and that he was not going to get the part. However, when he went back to the green room to take off his wig and get ready to leave, the executives found him, extended their hands, and said, “We just wanted to thank you again for coming.” He says that they had no reason to do that, but he thinks that they might have done it because they figured he would have taken the wig off by then, and they wanted to see for themselves how he would look without it. There was no laughter. There was no, “Take that damn thing off!” It was all much more subdued, and ultimately, lucky for all of us, he got the job!

He was brilliant in I Caudius, chillingly vile and intimidating. Made me sigh with relief when his character died. Sejanus (real historical villain) was not a pleasant chap.

I went to 'an audience with Sir Patrick Stewart' at the London Southbank Centre, wonderful to see the great man in person.

I got this a couple of days ago. Great read so far.

I met Kyle MacLachlan just as the movie Dune had been released . He was still living in Seattle renting a apartment at a friends home. Having just walked past a movie poster I did not realize it was him until my friend mentioned who the guy was I just spoke with. Kyle was a very nice guy.

Five thoughts on the book: 1. He liked playing Picard, but his first true love has always been stage acting. 2. There is surprisingly little about the X-Men franchise and not a lot about TNG beyond the early days, and I think that will disappoint some readers. Stewart may feel like he's told most of his Trek stories to death over three decades of conventions and didn't need to include them here. 3. Stewart spent a surprising amount of his life quite insecure - seemingly due to his upbringing in poverty than anything else, but also simply the difficulty of really breaking into the crowded and talented British theatre scene. 4. I'm disappointed Stewart's friendship with Brian Blessed didn't result in Stewart being cast in some role in Flash Gordon. 5. I don't think I've ever heard of a man so staunchly hetero yet so very friendly with so many gay men.

Having heard the discussion between Frakes, Shatner, Stewart and especially Leonard Nimoy who was the most accomplished director/producer of them all beyond Star Trek properties eg. "3 Men and a Baby" is Nimoy's most successful non Star Trek film. It makes sense. Whoopie Goldberg moderated their discussion. Stewart's lack of discussion of his directing/producing is more understandable based on that meeting.

David Lynch's Dune and Sir Patrick are the reasons i want to see Thanos in a starfleet uniform when i saw James Brolin playing the same character in the recent Dune film.

I've *definitely* always been of the opinion that Jean-Luc Picard just isn't that concerned about his baldness and doesn't consider it relevant one way or another.

The original dune was pure awesomeness. Patrick Stewart was great and the role I remember when I hear his name.

Sounds like I need to read (or according to some, listen, to this book!) I admire the dedication of actually WATCHING every episode. I'm sure, as an actor, that's not always easy. I would think being overly-critical of one's own work would be common in the business and he'd been involved in various parts of it (acting and directing, for example). Watching the shows, as the audience would, seeing what fans sees, I believe, is different from remembering working on it. They do take after take, film out of sequence, and while they may know the words, and the story, to see it on the small screen, with the effects, music and editing, I think, would be a very different experience. Considering how many hours he had to watch, from TNG the show, to the movies, that's a LOT of time! I appreciate the amount of research (for this IS research) that Sir Patrick did for the memoir. Much respect to Mr. Spiner (Data being my favorite character) and he's a LOT of fun and really hilarious when he's on stage or doing interviews, but there is a part of me that wishes he'd seen what the audience saw. (He famously said that he's watched some of first season, and nothing else, of TNG, which is unfortunate, considering how powerful some of his later performances and the episodes were). I understand that each actor relates to his or her craft differently - some love watching their own work, and others are either tired of it since they worked on it for so many hours and are just DONE and ready to move on, and some just CAN'T. But I think it's easier to relate to fans in many ways when they see what we see.

I first saw Patrick Stewart on I, Claudius with my Dad as a teen on PBS, out Public broadcasting network in the U.S. ! The Same place I saw Classic Dr. Who, and Red Dwarf to name a few! So when he popped in on Dune then on Next Gen I was deleted to see him again!
