Can't believe you guys did this list today. I was just telling my friend that that scene was lifted from the real Cuban Missile Crisis where adley Stevens just went off. But I saw the under-covered country when it first came out I didn't know where that line came from. It was years later while watching the Kevin Costner movie 13 days about the Cuban Missile Crisis. And when I hear that said I went that's where they got that scene from in Star Trek.

Glad you brought up Klingon Academy. Though I'd like to point out that Chang did not "team up" with Gorkon - this alliance was rather forced upon him by the actions of Torlek, the alter ego of the player in Klingon Academy. Chang even went against standing orders from Gorkon and abandoned his post when an all too convincing lure set by Melkor played out. This nearly allowed Melkor to become ruler - but he was thwarted at the last minute by Changs return after Torlek reminded Chang of his duties. Torlek was then sent on a deep space mission, thus explaining why he was absent when Star Trek 6 took place. In hindsight, Chang probably knew that Torlek would somehow manage to interfere with his plans or maybe even talk Chang out of it; thus he was sent away so he would not get the chance and maybe even to keep Torlek out of harm's way. Klingon Academy is probably the best tie-in to Star Trek 6 as it really sheds a lot of light on Changs character and motivations as well as the political structure of the Klingon Empire, Gorkons part in all of this and it also answers the question why the Klingons had to excessiveley mine Praxis for energy resources to the point of its destruction; during the conflict with Melkor they lost an entire star system which up to that moment contained their main supply planets.

Klingon Academy goes into Chang's backstory in a lot more depth. As he teaches at the titular academy, he starts several lessons with short lectures on Klingon philosophy. Honor, duty, and loyalty. He's clearly very traditional. A continuous part of the story is the conflict between Klingons who stand for something, like Chang and Gorkon, and those who just want to grab power and glory by any underhanded means necessary, like Melkor. Chang despised Melkor and his house so much because they represented the moral decay of the empire. But moral decay is not an enemy that can be defeated with a gun or a blade. And then you have the Federation. Conversations with Chang can reveal that he studied Humans extensively to better know his enemy. He even studied earlier eras of Human history, which led him to the works of Shakespeare, a man he said would have made a fine Klingon. To Chang, Humans from that era were not so different from Klingons. He says their sense of honor was primitive by Klingon standards, but full of promise, until they turned away from it. This is just me reading between the lines, but I think what is being implied here is that Chang is so obsessed with fighting the Federation because he sees them as having lost all their honor. Complete moral decay, from Chang's perspective. They, as an outside force, are an enemy he can fight to his heart's desire, where he cannot physically fight the moral decay he sees growing in his own people despite all his attempts to stem it. Fighting the Federation is a stand-in for that. And yet after losing so much to Melkor's deceptive plots, this obsession would lead him down the path of treachery and his own ruin. It's pretty tragic, really. And yet, you can kind of see why he would still be so respected after what he did.
@jefflace4949
@jefflace4949 3 жыл бұрын
Left out a nice detail on Klingon Academy. I don't think it was actually stated that Chang was losing however it can be inferred. What did happen, explicitly, is that Chang allowed himself to fall into an ambush. Chang contracts the player character (one of Chang's captains, Torlek) and instructs Torlek to gather as many of Chang's ships as possible and join the battle (not to save Chang but to defeat Melkor). Torlek happens across Gorkon and his fleet and Torlek explains the situation to Gorkon. Gorkon commits his fleet and saves Chang, this infuriates Chang as this puts him in a debt of honor to Gorkon which Gorkon uses to force Chang to support his claim. In short, Torlek's decision forces Chang to install Gorkon as Chancellor despite Chang's disagreement which revolves primarily around Gorkon wanting to make peace with the Federation. He believes that such a peace will destroy the Klingon Empire (atleast morally if not literally).

General Chang was in Star Trek Klingon Academy too. It gives a lot of backstory and depth to his character and Christopher Plumber was hired to play him too. By the time of Star Trek VI, General Chang was put into a difficult position by the actions of his promising student (Played by the Player) which puts him in debt of honor and he had to pledge his allegiance to Chancellor Gorkon which they both had opposing political positions.

When your video opened I think you hit upon an interesting tib-bit, almost. You said "As the world is mourning the loss of one of Hollywood's absolute greats." Then you went on to say, "Trekkie's everywhere are flocking to watch." But the way I first heard it was "The loss of one of Hollywood's great Trekkies." And by his own comments he did consider himself a "big Trekkie." I've heard him tell the story of his being responsible for Shatner being Kirk, as Shatner was "discovered" when he filled in as Plummers understudy. As always thank you so very much for the video.

Actually if you watch the finish of Klingon Academy, it's at least intimated that Chang knows what he's about to do in Star Trek VI. He even drops the name of the film when he tells the player character that he can't follow him any more and it would be best to get far away from the Empire. His final line in the game is "I go now to the Undiscovered Country from whos bourn, no traveler returns"

When I saw Chang, I thought that klingon fusions from the Star Trek RPG had finally been accepted as canon. That would have made Chang even more of a badass to have risen to his rank and stature, given the stigma that fusions faced in the Empire. Too bad the character's design is simply because the actor didn't want to wear prosthetics.

Thanks Trek Culture - really good analysis. Not Colonel Worf's fault - he should have been given more dialogue in the final cut. Interesting for Star Trek tie-in with Green Lantern. In the 90s there were some Star trek comics that were published by DC Comics, if memory serves, thereby putting Star Trek in the same universe as the DC Super Heroes. It would be great to see/hear more about Chang's background in Trek - maybe in the Pike-orientated series?

11. The original costume of Chang, was used in the "Prelude to Axanar" Fan Film, this time as costume of "Karn" a hero of the 4 years war.

Chang didn't want to support Gorkon regardless of cost. Torlek was the one who enlisted the help of Gorkon when Chang's meeting with the usurper became a Romulan ambush of Chang in the nebula.

They should take up Michael Dorn's suggestion of having a show featuring Worf and the Klingons..."Game of Thrones" style...

Anyone who saw Undiscovered Country in theater saw the little symbols on his eyepatch bolts. It was absolutely intended to be seen in close up shots on a huge screen.

7:29 I suspect that was the point, though. Just barely competant enough that the Federation couldn't screech about "Kangaroo-trial", and ensure a win for the Sovi--- I mean Klingons.
