William Campbell, who acted for 46 years, said that he had the most fun in his career doing the Star Trek roles.

The original Q. Without Treylane there is no Q. As a kid I wasn't a big fan of this episode. But over the years it's really grown on me. The actor playing Treylane did a great job. The performance definitely had a huge influence on John DeLancey who later played Q.

I can see that. And I definitely appreciate it for that. As Q became a fantastic character in TNG

The late great William Campbell who played Trelane would return in TOS "The Trouble with Tribbles" as the Klingon officer Koloth (also reprising his role in the DS9 episode "Blood Oath". A later Star Trek novel "Q Squared" reveals that Trelane is indeed a member of the Q, with Q himself being his mentor.

I REALLY like this episode, especially the-TWIST-ending,Trelane being a space-child with Galactic parents chastising him. Especially when the parents say-You wanted be allowed to make any more planets. LOL. William Campbell was a very good actor. RIP : Mr Campbell

I'm convinced now that I watched more star trek than I thought, this was a good one! I always appreciated the character development, it was in many ways ahead of it's time. I think it was so cool Mr. Shatner got to go on one of the space rides, at over ninety no less😊. Thank you as always for the video and commentary

Definitely Proto-Q. William Campbell enjoyed supporting roles in several notable films including Escape from Fort Bravo (1953), The High and the Mighty (1954), Man Without a Star (1955), Love Me Tender (1956), The Naked and the Dead (1958), and Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). But his role as Trelane made enough of an impression on me when I was a kid that when I got older and began watching old films it was always a bit strange seeing him in them. William Campbell played other characters on the show, so keep an eye out for him.

Yeah, the inspiration for Q must have come from this character. Just expanded on and adding more depth to the Q character.

Absolutely smashing! Heehee I first, too, hated the character; but the more I re-watched this episode the more I understood him and like how he acted: he had such enthusiasm and way of talking (he's a top-notch actor). Maybe it's because the harpsichord is my favourite instrument; and the artwork I love; but the way he expresses himself is likeable for me, his interest in human war and his descriptions. And Kirk and his crew always getting into trouble is fun. It wasn't fun watching it the first time, but now that I know how it ends, it's much fun and enjoyable. It's one of my top favourite episodes, mostly because I like the time period the alien reproduced (only the good parts of that violent time period, like the art and formal language, fashion, candles, "polite" behaviours, etc.). It's just another thrill ride for me. :) I just wished the food had flavour and was real so that I could eat what they were eating. ;)

I did love the medieval like setting. That brough some fun to the episode.

It's a midrange episode for me. It's enjoyable without being very original. I actually like William Campbell's performance as the Squire. (He was also good in Francis Coppola's first film Dementia 13.) But I don't much get too invested in bratty superbeings although I think Charlie X was a much better variation on this theme and Trelane definitely looks forward to Q who I also find annoying because I much prefer characters who are not cosmic magicians in a sci-fi story, but rather I prefer situations that test morals and ethics in an unknown territory. Balance of Terror and The Galileo Seven are excellent examples of that type of storytelling even though they're wholly different.

I agree Q had that vibe on season 1. But in the later seasons he was much more a presence that would lock horns with Picard in a philisophical manner. Just watch "Tapestry" or "All Good Things". Two fantastic TNG episodes

This was an average episode I think. Glad you saw it though. By the way, given your love of Westerns. There is a show from a couple decades ago called: “Wild West Tech.” staring David & Keith Caradine (misspelled) as its hosts. They explore the technology behind many aspects of the old west. From brothels to law men to bounty hunters, trains. I highly recommend it, even if it is something you watch on your own.

SG was fabulous and I rewatch it with joy every year, as I do GS. Sorry it didn't hit the mark for you. Trelane gently chides and challenges humans and their culture yet SG introduces an element of perspective not seen in other episodes as he is an immature member of his species.

Never liked this episode. It was redeemed when his parents showed up. Very unfortunate that Roddenberry introduced a like character in TNG that was ridiculous and not science fiction. Fantasy and just silly. D.C. Fontana was very upset when Roddenberry added Q to Encounter at Farpoint Station for TNG.

I liked Q in that episode, the A & B story kept that episode from being boring. Plus,Q is an interesting addition to TNG,DS9 and Voyager. If it wasn't for Q the TNG crew would never have encountered you-KNOW-who. LOL. Live Long and Prosper.

I agree he is too over the top in the first season. But I would highly recommend watching him in later episodes. The scenes between him and Picard are some of the best stuff TNG did. And he is much more reserved in the later appearances. "Tapestry" and "All Good Things" are two episodes I highly recommend watching/re-visiting. Very philosophical.
