Shelby is in it because they're specifically recreating "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II." However, real-world, I'm sure she's also there to have a female "battle" character and not use up the only obvious option - Dr. Crusher - in what they're hoping is a base set. (Sorry, Alex!)

Picard (SPOILER WARNING) had been changed into Locutus during this particular battle, so it makes sense that he's not included. As for the game name, it is called "Away MISSIONS" for a reason, and it's not called "Fleet BATTLES" or "ATTACK Wing" so it makes sense that you're not just battling each other the entire time.

True, but many see the set up and are hoping for more of a battler. It's really all about the factions, I have a feeling when we get to the Klingons, there will be quite a bit more battling. Love the variability of how to play each faction.

I am very much wanting a Star Trek game where you get to explore the enterprise, do tasks/missions on the enterprise, maybe go on away missions sometimes. If there’s other games that do this, I’m unaware?

It seems the game may be a bit confused about who it’s trying to appeal to. The way it is packaged, with the miniatures prominently displayed definitely seems to be appealing to the table top miniatures war game crowd. The game play and victory conditions actually seem to encourage more “parallel” style play which may not really appeal to the people the game seems to be aimed at. I’m hoping that the expansions will provide asymmetrical factions and goals that will allow people to pick a faction that allows them to play the way that suits their play style.

I'd say the miniatures seem to appeal more to kids in this case due to the art style. Even miniature games tend to only show you images of painted miniatures. There are exceptions to the rules (such as X-Wing, Armada, and Attack Wing) but that's not the majority. Plus, those are all fully painted thar are displayed.

Such a shame that it is so unbalanced but I love Star Trek (especially that era, TNG and DS9) so I'm still intrested. Looking forward to what you think of the Romulan and Klingon expansions and how well they play versus the Federation.

I've seen other reviewers say that it's very well balanced and others say its contender for their game of the year. I've also seen another echo the same unbalanced experience for their first couple games until they learned how to play the Borg. So in the end, it seems you have to play into each faction's strengths since it's so asymmetrical.

It feels like you wanted to give this a 6 but gave it extra credit because of what you wanted it to be. I understand the desire but it feels unfair to the consumer. Based on what you said in the commentary I won’t be interested in this hoping that an expansion might fix a broken game that “fell flat”!

Joey is a generous reviewer. I don't think that's a problem once you become accustomed to his style. I appreciate that he wants to see the best in something - it's a nice counter-balance to a lot of folks on KZfaq.

@@theoldman2821 I think that's way too blanket a statement, at least for me. I used to read the late Roger Ebert's movie reviews regularly, and I got familiar with his style and his preferences. I knew, for instance, that I was always going to like big budget family films less than he did, by at least one star if not more. However, I almost always agreed with him pretty much exactly on thrillers. That's just part of following a reviewer to me - you learn how to interpret their opinions over time and with repeated exposure, because no two reviewers are going to be alike. But I also think numerical/star ratings are fundamentally far less meaningful than most people assume, and I'm sorry Tom gave in to including them. For any positives they may have, they also give some folks more fuel to get upset - they give something completely subjective the appearance of being clear-cut and objective.

@21:04 he literally says he “really, really like[s] the system” and he enjoys the game. Also his premise is that in the past, IP games let him down. Because he believes this game is worth trying, you can surmise that this game did not let him down or exceeds expectations. Furthermore, he is looking forward to the expansions - if he rated the game a 6 then he wouldn’t be excited for expansions. So it is logical that Joey gave this game a 7 rating. Also, the review is fair to consumers - because they are free to watch the entire review. No one is forcing them to skip to the end and look at a single measurement in the form of a number rating.
