4K video of the restored 11-Foot studio model used in the original Star Trek series in the 1960s, before it was put in storage for museum renovation. Color matched on video with color chart. Close-ups of the running lights, decals, details, and correct color paint as it was in 1967 during the filming of "The Trouble with Tribbles." Natural museum light used, no camera lights.

I do believe the Smithsonian Team that restored the TOS USS Enterprise did a magnificent job! I would of preferred that the non-filming side of the ship mirrored the filming side and that the electronics and wiring were hidden inside the body of the model. They could have used pictures of the pre-restored model to show it’s original condition and technology.

The beauty of this ship is timeless and just shows how Star Trek: Discovery didn’t need to mess with its design when Pike’s Enterprise appeared. It simply wasn’t necessary to break canon.

@@TrekDelta “New” Trek could be canon IF its creators just respected continuity and what history came before rather than just throw a proud legacy out the window. They could have made Discovery look like Pike’s era, made it look just as cool, told great stories, developed rich characters AND keep their fan base (like me) happy. But nooooo… they had to trash established in-universe continuity to attract an ADHD audience.

I noticed that the Smithsonian restorers DIDN’T add glowing blue nacelles and I.D. lights to the beautiful vessel like so many model builders and CG artists love to do to the TOS Enterprise these days- claiming it’s ok because “Roddenberry always wanted to add those features but didn’t have the budget.” That still doesn’t make those features canon and that’s why the Smithsonian actually honored canon and did NOT add them. The greatest, most grand dame starship in all of sci-fi history. Can’t wait to see it when I go in October.

@aw3752
@aw3752 2 жыл бұрын
@@1324Potato Apparently the professionals at the Smithsonian cared enough about preserving canon to not add those features. If no one cares, why is Star Trek Discovery a miserable failure? Its streaming numbers are in the toilet. Lots and lots of Trek fans do care about logical continuity and honoring the legacy of what came before in some way that makes sense. Just because you don’t care about it doesn’t mean “no one” cares.

Wow... really does have a touch of green tint to the upper saucer section. I believe I saw it when the Air & Space museum opened and it was hanging up high in the ceiling. That restoration was horrible. Someone had painted some dark circular lines on the underside of the saucer section. Looked nothing like it did in the series. Glad someone properly restored it. Props for using the Color Checker. I've tried to get some of my co-workers to use one but these younguns these days only seem to want to "fix it in post."

I never get tired of seeing it. Even when I'm in D for work i try to stop by. For those who visit, the model is lit up at 11:00 AM, 2 PM and 4Pm for 15 minutes only. This was the pre-pandemic schedule. Please ask at info desk. It has a great viewing place in the main hall of flight. Restoration was perfect to the second season model look.

I wish the TMP model had ended up like this instead of in one of Jeff Bezos's office buildings. Imagine the the two being displayed together. This model had more detail than it needed to considering that 1960s cameras and TV screens couldn't even pick it all up

Like a lot of shows in the 1960's Star Trek was shot on 35mm film. The studio knew that TV resolution would advance in the future and people would be able to see the shows in their full glory on large 4K TV's.

I have an old picture of this prop model a friend gave me years ago when he saw it. The wires were there because of how the original film crew had it set up . that's why you only see starboard side of the ship on Star Trek. The picture I have from the 1970's has the original wiring shown. It was even wired up along the port pylon to the engine cap lighting. The port side also lacks the details of the starboard side.😃

@cfrate
@cfrate 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that it doesn’t look right. Part of it is using LEDs I’m sure, but according to the notes of the original model builder, Richard Datin, the rotating “dome” was not a dome, but rather spinning metal blades. The Smithsonian used a dome with lines on it. Can’t complain about anything else though.

Yes, it was really on there. It was really easy to miss because the resolution of TVs back then wasnt good enough for it to be visible. Its function has been debated, some think its the transporter emitter, some think its a high gain communications antenna for staying in contact with the landing party, but I dont know if it was ever confirmed. The original AMT/Ertl model kits did not have this piece.

This red pin dot piece in 04:50. I wonder it it was from some toy from the 60's, or from some other 60's product, maybe from some eletronic home device. Maybe they could find it among 60's products. After all, model makers niot just sculpt everything, but also add things they found around if it have some nice shape for their taste.
