In the scripts, whenever Spocknhsd to deliver one, itvwas annotated as "FVNP", for "famous Vulcan neck pinch"! Hahahaha 😂🤣 I love all three, and I think Captain Kirk has enough bravado for 3 Starship Captains. Spock is the gutsy, strong, guy, and Bones is grumpily hilarious about needing help. Plus, I love his "Shut up, Spock, we're rescuing you!", and Spock's archly dry reply, "Why, thank you, CAPTAIN McCoy!", from "The Immunity Syndrome".

I don't know why, but I love the fact that McCoy is awful in a fight. There are so many times in the original series and the movies where he tries to help but is completely useless. 😂 In the episode Friday's Child, they get attacked, and almost immediately, one of the bad guys pins McCoy, while Kirk and Spock keep fighting for a while.

Susan Howard who was Mara in the third season episode Day Of The Dove, was also on Dallas as Ray Krebbs wife. The Danish Madsen M1950 also had a unique design feature among submachine guns. The entire weapon, (besides the barrel and folding stock), actually consisted of two stamped steel vertical halves held together by the threaded barrel nut and hinged at the rear. It could be opened up left/right for easy-acess to all of it's internal parts during cleaning and field maintenance.

"He commands not just a spaceship Proconsul, but a STARSHIP. A special vessel and crew. I tried for such command....." Proconsul: "I see no evidence of superiority. They fight no better than your men did, Merikus. Perhaps not as well." Kirk's refusal to give in to Claudius Marcus's demand to beam the entire Enterprise crew down results in the Proconsul's contempt for Merikus, who later redeems himself by saving the landing party at the expense of his own life.

As much as I love "Next Generation," this episode of the original is why I have to give the original "Star Trek" victory by a SLIGHT margin. This is some of GR's best writing. (AN alternate 'what if?' portrayal of "If Rome Never Fell.) Also dodging PC crap, Spock is able to say what was interestingly beneficial about this environment. AND unlike "Star Wars," they couldn't just blow everything up. While they escaped, they had to obey the Prime Directive and not interfere. If nothing else, the PD works because it shows that sometimes it's not your place or within your power to change an environment.

I loved this episode. I did love them all; they were formative in my childhood years. This one, however, is the episode which detailed the crew's faith in Jesus Christ - because it also detailed the faith of the oppressed people in 'contemporary' Rome. That is why original Trek rocked. They told the Truth and never shied away from 'difficult' issues.

Merik really had the Romans thinking all Federation captains were a bunch of wimps. Fortunately Kirk disabused them of that notion quickly. One of my favorite scenes of the episode is later after Kirk has spent the night with Druscilla, Proconsul Marcus talks to Kirk one on one. Marcus says to him "You are a Roman Kirk.. or you should have been. But you are definitely a man and it's because of that I gave you some last hours as a man". During this conversation, Marcus is totally unflinching in his view that Kirk represents a threat to his society that must be removed. But he can also admit that he admires Kirk's resolve and commitment to his beliefs. You could almost say the Proconsul is a bit saddened that he has to end Kirk.

despite their nature and weapons, i think to most modern ears that ancient romans would actually sound about as frightening as frankie dettori - only if saxony in germany had conquered the ancient world would such people sound as menacing as in american things on TV today - when the romans marched into german forests etc they became frightened of the lightning and storms - unaccustomed as they were to those - intimidation wasn't really their strong point once far from home.

Kira and Trip would have had things a bit tougher, but Kira was able to kill a few faceless Klingon warriors in one episode and was an experienced soldier that already knew the limits of her own body versus larger, heavier opponents. Trip would have had the hardest time of all, being more of an engineer than a soldier, but given where he was born, I'm sure his Florida Man powers would've kicked in, and he would have shoved an alligator, a flip-flop, and a meth pipe up the Gladiator's ass.

How low was the budget for costumes on this episode? Kirk and company look like they are working out in the 1950's.

Wasn't that theme also used for the national anthem of Dr. Zoidberg's home planet?

The logic here never really made any sense. Trying to use two of kirks crew fighting to the death in the arena - which he clearly did not want to happen, as leverage to....what? order the rest of his crew to come down to be forced to do the same thing? How does that even work? I'm not seeing the leverage they thought they had by doing this. Doing what they wanted would have had the same result only for more of his crew and wouldn't help them any

The Proconsul was trying to play on Kirk's desire not to see his close friends killed. He obviously believed humans were weak-willed and so terrified of death they'd do anything to avoid it. He also wrongly expected Kirk would betray and sacrifice his entire crew to gain a high position on the planet ,(as Merrick did), and of course also avoid losing Spock and McCoy...
