Star Trek: First Contact is considered by many to be the definitive Next Generation movie. One of the most action-packed Star Trek movies, it pits Captain Picard against one of the franchise's most iconic enemies - the Borg and their queen, played by Alice Krige. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, the film proved to be a box office smash in 1996, becoming the highest grossing Star Trek film internationally, and setting up the Next Generation crew for a long-running franchise that, sadly, never really came to pass. In this episode of Revisited, we take a look at how this iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation movie was an answer to the critics that thought the last movie, Star Trek Generations, was too similar to a two-part episode.
Do you think Star Trek: First Contact holds up? Let us know in the comments!

I saw this in the theater opening night, and it was such an event. The theater was completely sold out and there was so many people decked out in all sorts of Star Trek gear and there were a number of Star Wars, lightsaber wielding people. When Data said the memorable "To hell with orders", the place erupted with cheers and yelling and such. It was a truly wonderful experience that I will never forget.

I saw it opening night too. The theatre was so excited when the lights went down at the beginning of the movie. Audience erupted into cheers after Stewarts’s masterful line delivery for the “I will make them pay” monologue. Audience also cheered when the Defiant appeared near the beginning too!

This is my favorite Next Generation movie. The Borg and Queen looked great, the Zephram Cochrane sideplot was hilarious, and the Picard was a bad ass.

The only "downside" was the scene where Picard and Worf get into a fight and yell at each other. They were sooooooo out of character in that scene it was laughable.

@@interdimensionalsteve8172 Yeah, I mean, it ain't like Picard rescued himself in Best Of Both Worlds, is it? Sure, it was his force of will and... Nah. I blame the writers for being American and not understanding the concept of Zeitgeist (or Hive Mind) fully. ...and for being too timid to explore THAT more fully as an existential threat to everything they know. Mostly, it's a cracking movie - though I prefer Generations, as Tolien Soren is one 'big bad' I can TOTALLY identify with (anyone with an NDE can).

this movie works as Star Trek movie, as Scifi movie, and as action movie. With or without existing trek knowledge, you get something out of this movie. Despite all the danger and fighting, a sense of wonder and novelty. A sense of progress. The movie is well paced. If you know the characters already or not, you want to know what happens next.

Underrated movie, it's in the same league as The Wrath Of Kahn, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country and that's really saying something. The theme is also easily the best of the lot, it's properly cinematic and moving. Alice Krige as the Borg Queen is weirdly sexy and scary. Any Star Trek with a cover of Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf is a win!

4:40 - There's a good reason for this. Throughout TNG, Picard barely lifts a finger to do anything except command his ship. We hear time and time again what a rowdy young man he was but he mellowed out. BUT, after coming into contact with the one and only JAMES T. KIRK, he has become ACTION PICARD! Kicking ass and taking names! Thus proving that anyone will become action if they just spend five minutes with Kirk :p

It was indeed a very cool movie which I watched many times. Picard’s line “the line must be drawn here, this far and no further…” is burnt into my memory. It does however end with the enterprise basically able to timetable at will which I found a big plot hole. Insurrection and Nemesis were both very weird movies. A race that wants to look better?!?! @lanesteele80
@lanesteele80 Жыл бұрын
Eh, I find it overrated, using the First Contact theme over the main titles kinda steals the emotional impact it has at the end and it overshadows the Borg material which is way too orchestral for the race, Jerry should have gone in a more electronic direction like Ron Jones did for The Best of Both Worlds Parts 1 & 2, because that sounds more like Borg music than what he composed for First Contact, although the Borg music by his son Joel does lean more in that direction somewhat and finally Jerry's music for the horror scenes is just not scary, I wish he had gone for his old Alien sound, a lot of bad decisions all around with the score.

We never watched the process he went through to get all those implants removed, and organic tissues restored. The episode ended, and then we had a time skip to where he's convalescing in France. Judging by other Trek shows, it's a long process, and they did not have the luxury of time or stable medical facilities. Displaced in time, and under siege by the Borg, there was probably no safe way to contain assimilated crew without risking the ship. It feels cold in the moment, but given the circumstances, it makes sense.

James Cameron didn't ruin Alien with the introduction of the Queen - there was always a hint of, "who or what laid the eggs in the first place." Trek ruined the Borg with the introduction of the Queen. The whole TRULY frightening thing about The Borg WAS the Hive Mind - NO individuality, no hierarchy. The Borg became just so-so; a rip off of Doctor Who's chilling Cybermen (with untidy sticky-out bits)... and nowhere as terrifying as the Daleks. It was the unfathomable loss of SELF that was terrifying - plus, WHY did The Borg created Locutus if they already had a Queen who could interact on more understandably individual (human)level? So yeah: terrific fun movie - even if Cochrane's taste in music was questionable! - yet notable for completely neutering The Borg, even going so far as to utterly disrespect Hugh's journey in I, Borg and Seven of Nine's in Voyager.
@jasonorriss
@jasonorriss Жыл бұрын
TBH I feel like that’s been an issue since The Best of Both Worlds. I never understood the need for Locutus and why the Borg would need an ambassador to facilitate the assimilation of Earth. “Q, Who?” had established the Borg at their purest as a hive mind race that couldn’t be negotiated with, or entered into a dialogue with. When the Borg sent a scout in that episode they didn’t give a shit about the crew or Picard, and were more interested in the ship itself, so I didn’t really get the idea of Locutus. (I know that dramatically it raised the stakes by having Picard captured and that iconic shot of him borgified, it’s just the in-universe reason never made any sense to me).
@jpofgwynedd3878
@jpofgwynedd3878 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonorriss Totally... although, in some senses, it made the Wisdom of the Borg Hive Mind superior, knowing that humanity would be better dealt with on an individual level, yet... still not really needed as The Borg are (were) so powerful at that point. A little bit like the first few versions of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers: to be told that ego and selfish urges are gone, etc... kinda scary to such an individualistic culture as in the US.

I'm so glad this didn't happen. First, just like Generations, we don't need crossovers again and again; having Worf on the Defiant was plenty of reference. Second, that plot would have taken up half the movie. They had a solid, ST:TNG movie with that specific cast and their chemistry, and it was great. If they wanted to do a ST:DS9 movie in the future, I wouldn't have been against seeing it, but I wouldn't want TNG characters stealing those characters' thunder, either. Sometimes less is more.

The line must be drawn hee-yar. Gotta say it right. Lol. Probably my favorite scene in the movie honestly. “Jean Luc Blow up the damn ship!” “No. Nooooo”

Objectively it is excellent and on par with Star Trek 2 and Star Trek 6. However, saying that it is the best TNG movie is setting the bar ridiculously low.

Homie triggered me with the way he said Data 😠. I will die on that hill. The line must be drawn here, no further! And I will make him say... it right lmao

@@Leftover81I had to fight the urge lmao. I've never said data (the word) that way but I guess if I did and I was reading a script I could make that mistake. What gets me is people that argue the point. It's a proper name in this context so it is pronounced however he wants, within reason lol

7:46 I’ve always hated how ridiculous data’s “pulled back Android flesh” look ends up looking like a prosthetic on *top* of his skin, and this sequence is the worst take of them all

Is that even Brent Spiner? 😂😂😂 it looks like they used the body stunt double in a final sequence😂

First Contact was a huge letdown. They turned the Borg into cartoon caricatures and blew the opportunity to tie the origin of the Borg into V’ger from TMP.

It was a fun movie, but I agree that introducing the Queen ruined the Borg as a real threat. It changed them from something truly alien to an ant colony with spaceships.

Why did the Borg only send one cube? They already know that one cube can easily be defeated.

Budgetary constraints, but don’t forget, the Borg Cube is enormous, has a vast arsenal of weapons and it can regenerate damage and adapt to enemy weapons to minimize damage.

Just a prediction for the far future, forget about federation, humans will be borg, rather then a federation, already happening now. Implants, drones glued to screens in all sizes and forms, robotics getting better and better. Combine all that with humans need to colonize, yea, i dont see a federation happen. On the show, the only thing thats missing in the entire star trek franschise is an origin borg story, it will be impossible to do without drawing similarities to human history.
