Whoo! Over 2,000 subscribers! Many Thanks and lets celebrate with a video stealing the Enterprise! I know this scene is already up on KZfaq but I try to upload the best in audio/video quality…
The title of this video kind of speaks for itself. But hey why not give a synopsis:
After the events of ST II: WOK, The battered Enterprise rests waiting to be decommissioned. After meeting Spock’s father, Kirk learns that Spock transferred his Katra into McCoy before he sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise. Kirk and company steal the USS Enterprise in order to reach Genesis to recover Spock and restore his Katra.
Meanwhile the Excelsior with the prototype transwarp drive is ordered to stop the Enterprise. Will the gallant crew succeed in Phase I of bringing Spock back to life?
This scene really shows off the wonders of practical effects; using models, green screen, camera work, blending different methods, etc. making it all look as real as possible when compared to CGI. This was when ILM was at its BEST.
I'm currently working on a series of videos showcasing iconic vehicles, ships, fighters, and scenes from the 'Golden Days of ILM and Special F/X’. Where handcrafted models, creative camera work, getting creative.. or even having full sized props were made for movies. A lot of you know that practical effects when done right still look awesome as shown in the Battle of Endor video. In contrast to today where everything is CGI and there isn’t much charm to it. Don’t get me wrong CGI can be useful for a lot of things. But movies of today is just all CGI. The upcoming videos will have clips gathered from Star Wars, Star Trek, Various Sci-Fi, Batman and action movies. The videos will have specifications, details, and backstories to them. I’m doing the series in a way to showcase practical effects, tell the specs and story of vehicles, while showing iconic scenes, in an attempt to make them fall under the ‘Teaching / Educate’ part of Fair Use.
Sorry for not uploading more; I’ve had a lot going on. As some of you know, last year I started the ongoing journey of life with both parents deceased. So holidays are bound to be rough as this is only my 2nd Christmas without my parents. I also had to deal and wait with YT's ID content system. I've also been having hardware headaches since I switched from Movie Maker to Adobe Premiere Pro CC..apparently my PC is becoming outdated and can barely run Adobe. But stay tuned! This is Prometheus / Robin Hood and I’ll continue to bring to the people!

The older I get the more this whole sequence makes me weepy. Their comrade saved their lives and they gladly give up their careers just for one chance to bring him back. They were let down by the system so now they're going rogue. I love how ride or die this crew is to the point of risking jail and stealing the Enterprise, a literal weapon of mass destruction just to have a ride. Now that I'm older and lost some comrades personally, I find this scene to be so heroic.

STVI is still my favourite in terms of how ships look. They reached the pinnacle of model filming there and it shows. CGI is great for filling in the gaps (like the special effects in this movie would've been better with CGI), but when it becomes the primary method, it lets us have nonsense like Nero's ship in the reboot. It's not believable because it's nonsense, and the only reason it's nonsense was because CGI removed the physical limitations.

Compared to say TMP where despite their best efforts, the music is very much same-same and the whole thing feels like nothing more than a special effects demo real for a LOT of the film, here its something nominally just as limited (the Enterprise reverses out of spacedock then goes to warp) but everything comes together to make it one of the most memorable scenes in the ST movies.

@Bryon Rogers novel or not, canon or not, i call BS on that. Styles doesn't seem or acts the type to fight out of a wet paper bag, much less a Klingon. One could say the same for Picard at first glance but you can at least see in his eyes and body language that he is the last person in the galaxy to mess with. And as he said once, one can test their assumptions at their convenience. As we saw, in the next scene. two Klingons died at his hands behind that and Kalest, Worf's nurse killed the third. Such body language, attitude or aura simply isn't there with Styles .

Technically speaking, Chekov was on the Star Trek equivilant of comms / sonar. Not exactly needed for the trip. Doc wasnt actually doing anything, Kirk only gave orders, that leaves Scotty and Sulu. Now they say in the scene that Scotty set up (or at least implied that he did it) the entire ship to be automated so that they could run it with such a skeleton crew. Being as how scotty was sitting next to Sulu it is reasonable to say that if Scotty wanted to and kept jumping back and forth between those two stations next to each other. He could have done Sulu's job as well or simply automated that function also. Suffice to say, what im saying is... a 5 person group didnt steal that ship. Scotty did, and he brought 4 friends along for the ride.

This is what I love about the original Star Trek movies that the Abrams ones are missing. The slow pace at which everything happens really conveys the majestic size of the ships in a way that nothing else can. There's more tension in this scene than the entire Abrams-timeline trilogy. I also love the little details like the waiter in the restaurant watching the ships - and the restaurant itself with its giant windows, like a seafood restaurant overlooking a harbor. The original Trek movies take time to let the audience experience this world they've created, while Abrams seems almost afraid to, always rushing to the next fight scene. That's why, even though the modern special effects are more advanced, the world of the original Trek movies feels real, and the world of the Abrams movies just doesn't.

To absolutely fair to Abrams (even though I don't care for the bloke and wish he'd never got near the IP), starships behaving like really huge lumbering beasts was ditched in DS9 & Voyager where Voyager and especially the Defiant are like fighter planes in combat and manouvres whereas the Enterprise and Enterprise D were more like a battleship.

Into Darkness: Kirk dies in a retarded engine that makes no sense at all, we get five seconds of "Aw, how sad", then Spock chases Khan down in another retarded action scene that makes no actual sense, and what feels like ten seconds later, Kirk's alive again with a phony explanation. It shows how much music and sound are such an integral part of movies. And yes that bombastic, triumphant crescendo as they fully exit is just the icing on the cake. I've seen this movie and rewatched this scene dozens of times and it still just makes you want to cheer at that moment. And then just a moment later, the music shifts as you see they aren't out of the woods yet. That Excelsior is hot on their tail. And then it builds again to that moment when Kirk stares forward and without hesitation says "warp speed". Only for the music to shift down again as Excelsior gets ready to follow, only for it to putter out. The musical ups and downs are timed perfectly and builds the tension and emotion, then releases it, then builds it again, at just the right time.

This scene is better than anything in the JJ verse. And better than most action scenes in cinema today. Don't get me wrong, I love big exciting explody action as much as the next guy, but it has to remember to thrill the audience -- not just assault their eyes. And today's cinema doesn't really get the difference. I think Star Trek would do well to slow the next movie down a bit (and it would help with the budget, as well). Have the big CGI/practical effects scene (or two), but have one of these nice scenes that knows how to takes its time to keep people on the edge of their seats, with bated breath. Voyage Home has another excellent example -- with the scene at the end where the crew goes to rescue the whales out to sea. The last time I can remember seeing this kind of scene in Trek was also one of the last, best Trek movies -- First Contact, as Picard & Co take on the Borg at the deflector dish with barely any guns to prevent the Borg from calling for reinforcements.

When Captain Styles says “Kirk if you do this you’ll never sit in a captains chair again” there isn’t even a nanosecond of pause on Kirks part it’s just “warp drive”. Watching this clip has inspired me to watch the whole film again. I cried at the end. My memories of this film are particularly special. It came out at a time when our family had just reached the point where we could go to the movies, which in our case meant a train ride to Belfast. When Star Trek III came out in the cinema, the ABC theatre in Belfast held a triple bill. My mother took me to see them. Three Star Trek movies, one after the other, all on one day. They got cooked food in and served lunch in the lobby for ticket holders. I had never seen any of these films before, to say nothing of on the big screen. I was blown away by the whole experience, and to this day we still talk about it. Any time Star Trek comes on the TV when I'm home to visit, she still says "do you remember the day we went up to the city to see the Star Trek films?" She still talks about how well made they are, about the music and the Dolby surround sound. Coming out of the cinema and back to the real world was a real culture shock, like I'd spent the entire day immersed in the Star Trek universe, and I almost resented the fact that I was born in a time when space travel was not yet commonplace or convenient. I think it was a big factor in inspiring me to become an engineer and make some contribution to pushing the boundaries of technology forward. And I'm glad I did.

The writers and producers aimed the show at college-level viewers and they hit their mark. Not bad for a TV series that almost was not made and lasted for only three seasons! And it still inspires people today. Amazing.

Star Trek The Motion Picture despite being an interesting story with good special effects had specific failures including the pacing being way too slow, not enough action, and uniforms that looked like pajamas. Star Trek III was by far the best of the odd numbered ST films.

This film epitomizes the spirit of Trek; a crew, volunteers, no less, of the most experienced Starfleet officers at their positions, willingly sacrificing their careers for a dear friend, a member of their family, forged through endless hours of blood, sweat, and tears. I can watch the "Kirk, you do this, you'll never sit in the captain's chair again"/ "Warp Speed!" sequence on repeat for hours and never fail to tear up at it. The ****head of Starfleet Operations**** throwing away his entire career for the sake of a friend...just tremendously human stuff. Doing the right thing is a lesson our society could learn, but if nothing else, we have superb acting reinforced by a soundtrack written when James Horner was in his early twenties, and the sound of the original Enterprise's engines powering up for one powerful, triumphant time is chill-inducing. So many other science fiction and space fantasy franchises ultimately fail to deliver the emotional and personal impact of those few seconds, nearly as impactful as Spock's death in the previous film. I mean seriously, at the time of this film we already had nearly two decades of this crew becoming a family through the best and worst circumstances possible, the effect on audiences at the time must have been tremendous. It's my fervent hope that someday we will be able to appreciate a Starfleet crew this way again.

@Ryeguy123a
@Ryeguy123a 7 жыл бұрын
Good practical effects will *always* hold up, because they're things that are actually there. The scenes in Independence Day where DC, NY, etc., are blown up will always look good, because DC, NY, etc., really did 'blow up' in those films -- just miniaturized versions of them. Ditto the look of Federation Starships in the 80s era Star Trek movies, because those ships were really made as models, and the battle damage we see is really there in the models, etc. Bad CGI doesn't hold up because CGI creates things that don't actually exist, and our eyes/brains are able to detect that because CGI can't make something that looks as real as something made in real life. When we see and acclimate to better CGI, our brains look at the dated stuff and immediately recognize it for being fake -- especially when the CGI stands out next to things that are actually real. (Case in point: Loki flying around NYC in Avengers already looks incredibly dated.) Honestly, good practical effects will probably stand up better than CGI does for decades, until CGI tech advances to the point where it can make something that is completely indistinguishable from real life. And the movies where CGI will seem 'perfect' before then will be movies with creators who understand how to use it best, so the CGI doesn't stand out next to real-life things (especially in bright settings) that could make them look fake. (If the NY battle in Avengers took place at night, the CGI of Loki flying on his craft probably wouldn't have looked so fake.)

That's incorrect, whilst a great clip, it has not aged well. Imagery technology has had 32 years of development since 1984 and thus CGI is indescribably more capable of producing realistic effects than models or CGI in the 1980s. Watching this clip you can clearly see the black outline of where the models have simple been edited in using primitive technology. Today's CGI can render ship that are 10x or more realistic in design and effect than models in this clip and for a fraction of the cost with no limitations, unlike a physical model, hence why physical models have largely been abandoned. physical models are incredibly time consuming to film and produce, can't do alot, and are very expensive compared to CGI.

I feel you can get the best results from a combination of practical effects and CGI, take this scene for example you could use a computer to airbrush out that outline that you pointed out the ships like the Enterprise and Excelsior would still be models but you could populate the spacedock with other CGI ships and orbital shuttles off in the distance where the lack of depth would be unnoticeable! CGI looks best when its used with other FX methods! its a tool like all others that can be overused

I love the way the ships move. You look at any sci fi stuff these days and space ships move in one of two ways. Either they are barely moving at all like discovery...they warp in and you would expect something to start happening but they just freeze...which btw i think looks absolutely ridiculous....or they zip around the screen like a dog fighting video game everywhere. The ships here have it perfect. There is believable speed, sheer weight and momentum, there is sense of distance. When the enterprise dips under the space dock, coming ever closer to the camera angle and you see Excelsior peak out from the edge beginning to make the turn to pursue.....it is absolutely perfect. This scene is I believe the best of all of Star Trek. The music is just incredible and makes what is essentially just backing out of a garage into an intense and emotional scene. Spock gave his life to save all of them and they had no idea that his body had been regenerated on Genesis. But, they were still willing to risk everything for the chance of saving his soul or at the very least honoring him with a proper burial. That is what true friendship means. That is how much they loved Spock. He was more than just the science officer, he was their friend. I know it's just a movie and just a story, but it really strikes at the heart of male friendship (something that is severely lacking in our day and age). How many of us today would sacrifice their lives and their careers to make sure their best friend had a proper burial? We have lost so much these last few years. All the craziness of our modern world. All the division and confusion about all the things going on, all the selfishness. This scene always makes me think about what is really important. That our personal relationships with our friends, our family, is far more important than all the other junk going on in the world. I'll admit, I'm extremely cynical about our world today and all the things going on. But, that's why movies like this are so important. How many of us would sacrifice our lives and our careers for a friend? Let's be honest, not many. Movies like this promote the ideal. What we strive for, what we hope that we could be. I wish if I were in Kirk's place, I could without hesitation say "warp speed", knowing all the consequences that would come. Would I? I don't know. But I sure hope I would have the fortitude and integrity to honor my friends the way they do and be willing to sacrifice everything for them.
