Cumberbatch made a great Khan. If you think about it, Cumberbatch gave Khan a little Sherlock flair. Twice in the movie, Khan dialogues and leaves his listeners reeling: first when he deduces about the Enterprise's warp core, and when he talks about how he will kill the Enterprise's crew. Did anyone else notice the Sherlock influence? Also, I think the reason why Spock's "KHAAAANNNNNN!" isn't like Shatner's is the setting of the scene. Shatner was ticked at Khan for leaving him to die; Spock was mad because Kirk was dead as a result of Khan.

I remember watching this in theaters, and I, not knowing who Benedict Cumberbatch was, having not even seen the Hobbit movies or Sherlock yet, was like "Man, I don't know who that guy is, but I can see a lot more great roles from the guy. Probably a lot less bad guys though." And, I was right.

To the people complaining about Khan being played by a white actor; Montalban was Mexican, not Hindi. Also, I think Montalban and Roddenberry would've loved Cumberbatch's performance as a new take on Khan just as Pine's and Quinto's were new takes on Kirk/Spock respectively.
@OhWellWhatTheHell1
@OhWellWhatTheHell1 10 жыл бұрын
Nitpicking here, but the correct term for someone from the country of India would be Indian. Hindi is the national language, not the nationality. It would be like calling someone from Cuba Spanish. I'm not upset, I just know a lot of people that make this mistake and wanted to help clarify.

janeyrevanescence12 In the prequel comic called Star Trek: Khan, it was revealed that Khan did have Montalban's appearance before he was discovered and captured by Admiral Marcus, who then ordered Khan to have his face and voice modified to what is now Cumberbatch's appearance and voice. Seriously, look it up👍

@@jslaughter95 "super old"? There was "The Original Series" in the 60s, but then what modern ST fans love are the tv series "The Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" from the 90s and early 2000s. Your comment somehow makes me think you've never actually seen the shows mentioned above. Nor the TOS movie franchise from the 80s or the TNG movies from the 90s. Also, no, the fans of OG Star Trek are not against change or growth. They are against action packed blockbusters, as this isn't what this series was ever about. As much as I like "Into Darkness" (I was 13 when it came out and it was one of the things that made me interested in Star Trek in the first place), this film has little to do with the Star Trek universe apart from the technology, character names and planets. It just doesn't have the feel of what Star Trek is .

The argument of actors not having the same ethnicity or skin tone as originals irritates me; it's the same gripe a lot of people had with the Thor movies with Heimdall (who is originally white in the comics). Honestly, if the person does a great job at acting who CARES? I doubt skin color changes the personality or essential traits of the character. I loved Benedict as Khan; he was just so villainous and bad, and that baritone really pulled it off too.

It's worth noting that the reason Khan and Carolyn were different from their original incarnations is because Abram's movies take place in an alternate dimension (literally the quantum-physics described kind, where all of the people that exist in the first dimension exist in the first, but with slightly changed circumstances). Nero chased the "old" Spock across a dimensional plane to the current universe containing the "new" Spock. After Vulcan was destroyed, Spock opted to remain in that dimension to assist the now planetless Vulcan race. The movies play off this rather well, hence the mirrored versions of the radiation chamber thing. In the previous universe, Spock made the sacrifice. But in the current universe it's Kirk, because parallel dimensions are all supposed to be variations of each other. So in short, in the "new" universe the characters are all different versions of existing people (like the two Spocks). In this storyline the Botany Bay was discovered by Admiral Marcus instead of Kirk.

Don't be a dolt Michael, it's not about changed *timelines* The British Khan exists in a *PARALLEL DIMENSION* to the dimension inhabited by the original series characters. For God's sake, many episodes in TOS involved one or more members of the Enterprise *encountering parallel versions of themselves from parallel dimensions*, and a widely held concept of parallel dimensions is that there are an infinite amount to account for every choice and variance, a new one exists for every choice that is made etc. The LEONARD NIMOY Spock that appears in this film is literally the same character played by the same guy, but in *the FIRST Abrams film, Spock followed Nero into THIS DIMENSION* AKA: AN *ALTERNATE* DIMENSION TO THE ONE THAT THE *ORIGINAL KHAN, KIRK, MCKOY*, AND GOD DAMN HARRY MUDD ARE FROM. Do you understand yet? The whole story/characters/universe from TOS is still right where it was at by the time Spock left it. All the same characters are still alive or dead in the "original" dimension, *this film and this Khan exist in a parallel universe, and original series Spock has traveled to it*

+Michael William the explanation is much simpler. Khan is historically worse then Hitler. Someone is going to notice him. Section 31, the most covert agency in the Star Trek universe, had to make cosmetic changes to hide his identity. Starfleet had made some pretty drastic cosmetic changes to officers in the past to the point of making them look like completely different species. A group that prides itself on remaining invisible could easily bleach someone's skin and give them a hair cut.

Funny thing about Shatner's 'KHANNNN" is that, Shatner was reacting to Khan telling Kirk that he'd blow up the Enterprise, which he believes is pretty much dead in the water, due to him listening in on the crews transmissions. But then you find out Kirk and co. accounted for that by speaking in code and Kirk knew he was going to be picked up despite Khan's threat. So Kirk wasn't really angry when he said it ad it was all part of the deception. And it's that extra level thinking that made Quinto's poorly written, shallow rendition not play so well.

I liked Into Darkness a whole lot for the first couple of acts; Cumberbatch stole the show, and it took a few twists I didn't see coming (like Khan having to help the Enterprise at one point). And then came the Wrath of Khan parallel near the end, which I hated. At least in Wrath of Khan, Spock stayed dead until the next movie, but in Into Darkness Kirk was resurrected (under a time limit) with Khan's blood, which was just a huge cop out.

I'm really impressed every time when an actor can actually cry in a scene. Get so into their character that they really star crying always tells me that the actor is superb. When Cumberbatch talked about his crew and the tear came rolling to his cheek, it just broke me from the inside. But when Khan meant business, he showed it big time. It's still nice to see that villain can be both good and evil and not just a cartoon character with black and white morals. Cumberbatch was really fantastic.

I love all the little hints and throwbacks to the classics. from the tribbles to Carol Marcus*wonder how far JJ will take that one*. and as far as a message like all the other treks have conveyed, I honestly believe that the message here was in reference to the drone strikes i.e. the proton torpedoes. that's just my opinion. loved Into Darkness.

If so, a really subtle one, but I love those. In the show "Are We There Yet" (I'm not a fan, it was just on) there was a reference to "1984" by George Orwell when a man boosted up on energy drinks said, "Big Brother's watching! Big Brother's always watching!"

And I cannot express enough love for this "reboot" it's so good ! Inter character banter is perfect! Action and tragedy was riveting ! Some minor things are not quite on par, but doesn't detract from the film at all

Benedict Cumberbatch is the most perfect villain ever. His line delivery is phenomenal, his voice is pure silk, he's just plain cool.

Benedict as Khan was so good that I literally shivered at how badass he was while watching in theaters.. That deep rumble of a voice did something to me..

Into Darkness was my first exposure to Cumberbatch and I enjoyed his performance very much. So when I saw him play Dr. Strange (a Marvel character I had no idea about) I figured he was going to be great. And he is.

That description of what I thought the plot was based on the trailer (Kirk chasing Kahn's bigger ship and losing, crashing the Enterprise into the ocean) was spot on! Totally what I thought. Not remotely what happened. @ 1:04 Watch the trailer again peeps.

Just so you know, a tie-in comic explained what I theorized. Marcus physically and vocally altered Khan before waking him up, which is how he went from Ricardo Montebaln to Benedict Cumberbatch.

In a comic book, they explained that before he got woken up, they gave Kahn a face change & a voice & accent change too, to hide his true identity, then blocked his memories to get him on Starfleet's side. However much of that stuff about memories you take as canon, we all know that's the only logical explanation as to how this can be an alternate timeline reboot movie series & Kahn looks & sounds different, plus that's probably how they're gonna explain it in the future, when they bring Kahn back for another sequel.

In the dark, in the background mostly but it was greatly showcased when he broke that one guy's arm without the camera hiding it.
