I enjoyed Into Darkness, even if it was essentially a remake. Like you said, I was hoping for a more original story. I'd give it a low C. Would have placed Voyage Home higher, but each person's ranks are different. Watched TMP in the Fall when it was in theaters for just a day or two. For the most part, the visuals did still hold up.

I generally agree with the rankings, and with the points. I think that Final Frontier and Nemesis both have that fundamental story issue in that you go "huh?" while admiring how well shot it is and how decent the actors are. Into Darkness is a meh movie but if you're new to Trek (before you dig deeper), it's an okay movie. My first Trek movie was Khan. I actually didn't see the first movie until I had seen the next four, so it was familiar to me, but I also liked the cerebralness of 2001 so it really struck a chord with me. TMP is a better film than people think, and I too saw the 40th anniversary screening in a theatre near me with another avowed Trekkie.

The “killing off” of Robert & Renee (Picard’s brother & nephew) upset me when I first saw it but I think this is perhaps the most important part of the movie. I don’t even consider the movies canon for the most part (B4 does not exist) but how Picard goes from being a childless career man to watching his entire family line being extinguished & how he processes this is very deep & ofc Patrick Stewart’s acting throughout is amazing.

As someone whose first exposure to Trek was Star Trek 2009, and who had never seen TOS when I went to watch its sequel... no, Into Darkness isn't a great movie for newcomers. I found it very dull, and so did my husband who watched the trilogy with me. The 2009 film made us optimistic (if cautiously so), Into Darkness stripped that optimism compeltely, and Beyond blindsided us and restored our faith in cinema.

Great list. My huge concern is you mentioned Goldsmiths work for 5 but not for 1. The motion picture has possibly my favorite soundtrack of all time, deserved a mention at least imo.
