Although not intended to be comprehensive, this video serves as a representative sample of phaser rifles (and their 22nd Century equivalents) in Star Trek over the years, ranging from The Original Series to Enterprise.

I love the TNG:FC rifles! The sound effects for those blasts are just so awesome; up there with the sound of the Enterprise E's quantum torpedo launchers. And... oof, while ST: Nemesis has some great space battles, the sound effects for the rifles were pretty poor. Too much pew-pew and not enough searing-pulse.

You’re right about the sound, but the sfx for the nemesis rifles were great. Edit: Guess that comes with having better sfx in general.

Agreed. First Contact and Insurrection were spot on with their phaser rifle sound effects. You got a sense of power from the blasts. Nemesis was a regression when it came to phaser rifle sound effects. It sounded more like a toy than something awe-inspiring. And speaking of Nemesis, the scene where security officers pulled phaser rifles from the rotating storage lockers in the wall rubbed me the wrong way. That was a waste of space compared to the rifle racks in First Contact and Star Trek: Picard season 2’s first episode.

@@VincentPascual it's not the most efficient way to store them I agree, but I like to think that there's one of those on every deck, and maybe more than one on the larger decks. The idea being that they're securely stored in a way and they're always charging but they are readily available to anyone who needs one who has the proper clearance. Then somewhere there is a bigger Armory that just has them in racks, it is supposed to be the same ship after all

My personal fav are from First Contact. It's like firing "mini photon Torpedos" ☺️ In Star Trek Elite Force u have can shoot something similar and in Elite Force II, the rifles secondary shot is like in Star Trek VIII

I think the original Type III phaser rifle doesn't get enough respect. It grew on me over the years, I can see the other variants as responses to the Borg threat but in a pre-Borg era the Type III fits logically into the established "phaser ecosystem."

@@Hawthorne-Studios you might be thinking of the compression Rifle which was developed to try to punch through Borg shielding. I mean the old one from TNG the TV show that looks like it has the same head as the hand phaser type 2 but it has a long shaft and two handles

Funny how all federation weapons have different beam modes, but they're rarely used. Wide beam? Never used in the siege of ar558, even though it would wipe out that platoon of jem’hadar easily. We see it used to sweep rooms, but thats about it.

Pulse phasers don't make sense. Pulse blasts are slower than light, such as blasters from Star Wars (thought to be plasma bolts). Fast, but not light-fast. Phasers were always shown as beam weapons - instant on, instant off, fast as light.

@@outdoorscholar6016 It's not so much that they are "slow" as they are a wholly different kind of thing. Look at pulse lasers from Elite Dangerous to see what pulse phasers should look like, it's more like a strobe light effect than bolts that are physically moving. Looks aside though, in-universe beam phasers are more versatile and efficient while pulse phasers are more effective against shields. I'm also not sure that disruptors and pulse phasers aren't the same thing.

Thank you for noticing that! I mean what if it was a very bad copy of a phaser rifle that became unstable and blew up? You don't want a phaser overload right next to your Warp core.

@@Hawthorne-Studios Data is about a foot away from when Gordi shoots the phaser into the warp core. Gordi is less than 2 yards from when the vulcan shoots the side of the shuttle. In both casea, that's a lot of misplaced trust when getting completely out of the way would have been quick, easy, and not at all detrimental to what they were doing.

Hey John I was wondering, do you know where the audio samples of "TNG Warp 1" and "Soran's Gun" from Trekcore's website originated from? I've been looking all over the movies and episodes of the TV show to rip them myself and preserve their best audio clarity possible but I can't for the life of me find such long and clean samples. The warp can also be heard in thatSFXguy's "Star Trek Warp speed flyby sound FX from the movies clean" video (the last one) and it doesn't seem like it comes from the movie. I've asked him but no response so far so I wondered if you had an idea?

My guess would be that the audio samples come from the Star Trek Generations soundtrack CD, which included a large selection of sound effects. A track listing can be found here: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Trek_Generations_(soundtrack)

6:10 Regular old slug throwers would have done a better job at 556 than phaser rifles. Give me a M240, a M60, or good old Ma Due with 3 fixed positions and the Jemhadar would have never even made it to the entrenchment.

Always loved the MACOs and their rifles. It felt right having proper marines aboard for security and away missions rather than just watching redshirted security mooks get mowed down.

Love Trek, but man, the lack of basic firearm safety is so blatant… I’m not super into guns, but I’ve been to a firing range a couple of times. Making sure no one is down range, stopping the constant muzzle sweeping, and having trigger awareness would only make the rifles seem more realistic in the show. Geordi! Get away from the shuttle! Stop firing near Data!!
