I think something happened to the Q Continium, even if the civil war stopped in Voyager they were injured,divided and some wanted to die. maybe leaving Q with powers that are draining

In that case it wasn't a surprise, he was told it was going to happen and had a choice to make. What hasn't happened before is his power simply failing without warning.

Maybe the future xenophobic "Confederation" found a way to defeat/neutralize the Q Continuum. that would probably cut Q off from his powers no matter what time he was in.

The other time a Q lost their powers was during the civil war they had and she was damaged and did not have the immediate ability to do as she pleased. So this slides my theory forwards that him trying to help picard is damaging him and thus loss of power.

I think its more likely the Continuum is dying or dead if you remember Voyager plotlines they had already engaged in a civil war, some wanted to die and so even after the peace there an uncertainty about what was going to happen with the Q. I think maybe Q's weakened state caused him to mess something up and so he is trying to fix it with picards help. "Penance"

Actually if you take away thier genocidal agenda - they have actually beaten everyone and every single crisis that Federation also met - including Borg. And by beating they literally had such upper hand over Borg that they were even in position to abduct thier queen for ceremonial execution. It's canonical that the Q can have their powers and immortality taken away, but I'm wondering if the twist here is that it can also happen as a result of age or disease and Q is suffering from the Continuum's equivalent of Alzheimer's disease and, in an act of cosmic irony, has made him vulnerable to manipulation by another player? Or prone to irrational and obsessive acting out -- the Q we've previously known may have been a cosmic a-hole but he was always an a-hole with an agenda. :)

@@binsurf do we really know if they're immortal? They may simply be _extremely_ long-lived. There are also other beings in the Star Trek universe on a comparable power level such as the Douwd. The Q are even somewhat cautious about the Borg.

I think there was a novelization about the Eugenics wars and they explained it as very covert and hidden with proxy factions, etc.

In the story where Voyager goes back to 1996, history is already altered by Braxton arriving earlier in 1967 and Starling using data from his time ship to "invent" things. It's not clear if the history with Khan is intact after they resolve the temporal disruption. Tom Paris at least seemed to think things were right for the time period and he was a fan of 20th century culture.

@@Htheorphanarian I would guess sarcasm, but yeah I do too. Picard is a fan of Shakespeare and has quoted him on several occasions. Star Trek has Shakespearean influences. Hell, a minor plot point is that Klingons believe Shakespeare was Klingon, because no human could write so passionately about Klingon subjects.

Patrick Stewart is classically trained in Shakespeare. It influences much of his acting style which is why he’s so amazing and Shakespeare still alive in so much.

Well I have to say Picard deserved it. Being old and cantankerous. Don't make me think just explain it all to me. The entire point of the trial was for Picard to START thinking. Thinking in new ways. Stop being lazy. OK. You want narrow minded. Wars with the Dominion. The Borg invasion of the Alpha ans Beta Quadrants that wiped out hundreds and /or thousands of worlds. Killed trillions, your squabbles with the Romulans and the Typhon pact.... Forgetting about actual growth of the mind in favour of surviva Well he you are. This is that world. We will survive!! At any cost! And we will take no risks. We will rule and we will exterminate any who resist.

Finding extraterrestrial life means that we're not alone in the universe. Simple, but it has a profound impact.

I guess it makes sense that the outcome of humanity's first contact with what type of Alien race determines the path of what we'll become. In original timeline we were first contacted by Vulcans who were peaceful and that lead to Federation. I imagine if we were met with a hostile alien race the first time we'd have an entire paradigm shift to ensure humanity's survival by becoming militaristic

Anything's possible, especially with Kurtzman at the helm. He could rewrite Picard into gaining Q's powers by the end of this, or that the reason the Q are testing humanity is that we are the Q several millennia down the road . Or that the Confederation future they just escaped from is actually the Starship Trooper's universe. To quote Picard: " A safe galaxy, is a human galaxy! ". Would you like to know more? Perhaps that the Q just decided to kill themselves off finally and de Lance's Q is the last one, and his powers are fading, or just gone because of the mass suicide of his race. However that wouldn't explain why the 31st century Starfleet Admiral would say that the Q are not likely responsible due to no contact. He would just say they're all dead. Unless Picard and his merry crew don't make it back home to file a report.

Star Trek really overestimated how quickly we'd develop scientifically. They had some good forethought on technologies like the communicators (mobile phones) and PADDs (smartphones/tablets), but on stuff like space travel they were extremely optimistic. Khan and eugenics wars in 1996. Launching Nomad in 2002. We're probably still centuries away from being able to launch an interstellar mission.

Roykirk Plaza - Nomad the space probe from TOS; the human probe half was made by Roykirk and the merging corruption made it think Captain Kirk was its creator.

That guy listening to very loud music in the bus was also an obvious hint to the same scene in Star Trek 4 with Kirk and Spock in the bus :) Somehow the guy here turned out to be rather nice after all unlike the guy in ST4 :D
