There's your murder charge!!!! This scene in this episode always gets me. This is probably the second best episode of TOS. No matter how many times I see it you forget your watching a TV show and your praying for anything to stop M5 from killing all those innocent people. It's like your living inside James Kirk body and feeling what he had to be feeling unable to stop M5 from killing hundreds even thousands of his fellow star fleet!

@@sandal_thong8631 Fair point. We tend to overlook that Roddenberry's first notion for casting a First Officer involved a woman (he found a place for M. @danbasta36776 жыл бұрын
last first Agreed. Hate the Bill Shatner bashing myself. He's a good trained actor and as he was after all the main star if the show, as it dealt specificly about a young starship Captain, a logicial half human, half Vulcan, and a very human chief medicial doctor, this young Captain was given his first command of a starship, and proved many times his ship, his crew and his career were top priorities, even over his love interests he was involved in. The other actors and actresses were jealous of him and his acting, yet folks, he did guide this tv show to the still current, emence popularity it has today.

Shatner was good at playing the character Kirk. I've never liked any of his other stuff that includes Denny Crane. In any case, the original question was why do people think he is a bad actor. It's The mystique of TOS. Have you ever watched it all the way through? The production was often plagued by a low budget, poor scripting and incompetence. I've seen TOS all the way through several times and little things like occasionally seeing microphones in the frame or the actors staring off camera can be seen more than once. Paramount did not always have time or money for a re-shoot or the editing literally missed it. Often enough you see Kirk and all of the other characters doing and saying things that are inconsistant, but the production couldn't do any better. Take the episode with the Gorn for example; it is the bed rock argument for Shatner's so called bad acting. However that episode showed the symptoms of all of the problems mentioned above and not even Shatner could do any better under those working conditions. In any case, it was the idea of Star Trek itself, the good episodes and Shatner among Nimoy, Kelly et al. that made Star Trek into what it is.

TOS was so ahead of its time (like Outer Limits) in the portrayal of black people as equal human beings. In a couple of episodes of The Outer Limits a black man was portrayed as an electronics technician and sergeant in the U.S. military. In another a black woman was portrayed as a nurse. Here a black man is portrayed as the greatest computer genius in the Federation, whose name was revered in TNG. I am a white guy who was raised as a racist but was saved by The Original Series that I watched as a child. It took a while but it cured me. The biggest thing i hated about this episode was when they were doing the drills earlier, the Lex caption praised the M5 and insulted Kirk. But the moment they started taking real damage, they completely forgot about M5 and started blaming Kirk as if he was doing all of it, never thinking it could be an M5 malfunction, you know, the thing they were there to test.

They assumed that Kirk could override the M5 and had no way of knowing that the M5 was (rather like Hal in 2001) had taken control of the ship completely out of the hands of the humans, and was not even allowing Kirk to contact the other ships to explain what was happening. A typical human failing. :)

@@00bikeboy I wouldn't really call it a plot hole, just human nature. Similar to when things go badly for people they blame fate, others, nature or Murphy's Law, but when things go well they attribute it to God. Here when things go well, they immediately attribute it to M5 because they are already disposed to approve of it, the wonderous computer that can do no wrong, and in fact, work better than humans (in a way God). Then it is easy to blame the human, whom you have already decided isn't as great, bc of course it couldn't pOssibly be the perfect computer's fault. By the way I'm not saying God can't bring about good things, but it's silly to act like bad things just happen and he can't manage to do anything about them. Anyhow, this turned into a way longer thing than originally intended, hope u are having a great day :)

The damage to the 3 was probably fairly negligible; certainly in Commodore Wesley's view. This commodore knew his work well -- his three would slaughter the lone Enterprise. Enterprise stood no chance standing against three fully armed, and alert sisterships. The ultimate computer relied on a sneak attack in knocking one out -- but then it's advantage was lost. Wesley would be, in effect, signing Kirk and Enterprises' "death warrant" by going over to the attack -- three sets of phaser banks and three sets of photo torpedo tubes all against poor Enterprise Never forget his task group was all sister-ships, so Enterprise had zero advantage in that respect. Her sisters would have quickly destroyed her shields, then cut her to ribbon structurally with full-power phasers and spreads of photon torpedoes. For once Kirk had it all backwards, which unfortunately blights this episode somewhat.

Even if Kirk had a psychotic breakdown all the other crew members would have had to go along with Kirk, or just sit back and let it happen. Also, if no human on the Enterprise is communicating with Wesley, doesn't that suggest that the M-5 is in control. I understand that Starfleet considers computers superior to humans, but there's no good reason to assume Kirk is responsible.

Thank you for using the original special effects from TOS I personally hate the modern special effects in the remastered series. Gee I don't think the painting Mona Lisa is modern enough, I'm going to add some new brush strokes to it to "enhance" it. What were they thinking?

This was just a Trek tease dammit! Now I have to go watch the rest of this episode! Frelling CBS! Always loved seeing four Constitution class starships at once. Pretty sure this is the only TOS episode with more than two on the screen at the same time.

Always wondered why he didn't whip out his communicator and contact the fleet that way...being's that M5 had control of ship communications. Surely they were close enough to reach the other ships. Oh, it's a TV show.
@Carthaginian6011 жыл бұрын
Because emergencies simply can't happen during mock war games using a completely new computer system? Are you saying red alert was disabled? Plus the M-5 was chasing those other ships around for some minutes. None of those ships had time to increase shield strength to full power?

So Commodore Wesley knows it's an M-5 drill, he even says it's a drill at the beginning of the clip. Yet when M-5 attacks, he immediately blames Kirk. Why wouldn't he think M-5 is doing this?
@josephmanno45144 жыл бұрын
Because he assumes Kirk can instantly disengage the M-5. He's under battle stress; he's not thinking perfectly well.

Leaving the area of the exercise was probably the only thing that saved them. The M5 would have destroyed the entire task force if it could have. It operated with a ruthless efficiency that no human crew would be capable of and without a conscience to moderate it's capability for violence. If Dr. Daystrom hadn't used psychology on it it might have sought out and destroyed any target in sensor range. Star Fleet would have had to hunt down and destroy Enterprise at great expense in ships and lives

It wouldn't have been able to destroy the entire force. Three onto one, regardless of how fast it thinks, is simply too great an advantage. M5, and our beloved heroes, would have all been dust had it pressed its attack.
