Gotta love how the Enterprise still looks sleek and futuristic decades after the show aired. Truly an iconic design masterpiece.

TNG just gets better and better with each season. The writing especially from Season 3 onwards is so well done and i guarantee you will love this crew by the end.

I hope you enjoy it. I think the 1st season writing is a bit weak but that it get progressively better and by season 3 and onward it's absolutely excellent.

The main cast have said that in season one, they were still trying to get the characters right, but they soon start to gel together when they use their own personalities more later.

You're watching TNG! Early episodes are a bit shaky but with lots of character- and world-building. Once the writers really learn the characters, and the actors begin owning their roles, it becomes one of the best scifi exploration shows of all time. You're in for a treat!

A lot of people appreciated La Forge being born blind and choosing to not have it "fixed" with surgery. He was perfectly fine with just using his visor and was perfectly comfortable with his disability.

The sincerity of spirit that the Next Gen carries, especially in the earlier seasons, warms an old gal's heart. I had the kindest parents in the universe, they bought me a Bushnell Star Machine Projector, went to the mall and bought "Best of Both Worlds" soundtrack for my Talkboy, ........and I genuinely cried when my Dad somehow went and bought the Enterprise D toy ship on his way home... from work for me.... annd I pulled all the curtains and turned the bushnell on nand flew my Enterprise around the room like a tiny idiot. *wipes her eyes* I became an astronomer because of that. The Bushnell wasn't just a prop it was meant to be a sky chart device. We're able to target Messier objects by memory today on our seven inch Celestron thanks to that thing, and we're all happy. Sometimes a Galaxy Class or Bird of Prey might still fly through the frame.

This is without question my favorite TV series of all time! You can’t even begin to imagine how epic this series becomes!

Wonderful show to react to! The first couple of seasons may not be perfect, but trust me, it gets better with each single one!

If you didn't already know, Jen, in the opening monologue Picard states "where no one" instead of "where no man has gone before" as it was previously.

The day before TNG debuted, I read a newspaper critic's review of the pilot. She mentioned that TNG imagines a future so litigious that every starship has a lawyer on board. That confused me, until I watched the episode and realized that she misunderstood the job of "Counselor" Deanna Troi.

Massive respect to you going from Undiscovered country to the pilot of next gen, most reaction people would have gone to Generations, I guess you really have gone to where no reactor has gone before, good job, I was already subscribed, so i'm just going to follow you through all seven seasons, strap in, half will be yellow alert, half red.

I was born in 85, and my memories only began in 89, so I was able to start watching the 3rd season right away (though I still saw reruns of the first two seasons as well.)

This series made me a Star Trek fan here in Germany in the early 90s. Since then, I haven't missed anything Star Trek-related. 🖖🥰

This brings back so many great memories. I remember watching it when it premiered in 1987 with my parents. I was 11 years old and I was hooked. While the first two seasons had some growing pains to go through in order to separate itself from comparisons to the original series, there were a number of great early episodes, The Measure of a Man being of particular distinction. Though the show really picks up in season three. I hope you stick with the series to the end and eventually move on to the other Next Generation era series Deep Space Nine and Voyager and the movies.

I am addicted to your enthusiasm! That's what makes your reviews so fun ! The first couple of seasons are over the top, the writing and music and especially the acting at times. It does get much better. To be fair the actors need time to flesh out their characters and so too does the writing. Personally I think the time it becomes really good is after Riker grows a beard!

I was a kid when Captain Kirk went on a 5 year mission. It was the 70's and Star Trek was syndicated. I was ANGRY when they made a new Star Trek, without Kirk. How could they? No Spock? No Kirk? No McCoy? Was I SO WRONG! I forgot that Star Trek is an idea. An idea that we all share. It didn't matter what culture, religion, sex or any preference you had. I wan to be a Patreon...just so I can take this journey again with you.

Morning, Jen! Really looking forward to this. I agree with commenters from the Community tab who say the series improves as it goes along, but I enjoyed it from the start. I think the writing got better, but another factor might be something Patrick Stewart talked about on Conan's podcast, promoting his new memoir. He said during the first season he scolded his castmates for fooling around on the set. But the outcome was they convinced him to lighten up and fool around, too. Sounds like a very playful environment.

TNG is my Trek era. Patrick Stewart is my favorite captain as a result. Even when he loses his cool, he is poised and eloquent. I grew up catching random episodes as a kid, and finally did a full rewatch a few years back. I found the most interesting thing about the first season is the costumes. The onesie-style uniform were reportedly terribly uncomfortable to film in, and yet they drop the man-dresses and even Troi's Uhura-style outfit fairly quickly 😅 The evolution of the costumes across the seasons is also very interesting, and I really appreciate when the crew finally get some comfortable fits.

This was on when I was a kid as well. I would fall asleep at night with this on in the background. I'm 40 now and still fall asleep with it on a lot. This and Frasier provide such a level of comfort that it's hard to top. I'm excited to go on this journey with you and see it through your eyes. Keep up the good work!

The saucer separation thing is because the enterprise d in addition to being a deep space exploration vessel is also basically a giant hotel/convention center. All the civilians and children evacuate to the saucer section while the crew stays and fights whatever.

The show improves tremendously beginning in season three

if you like this series now, you're going to love from season 2 onward where it really hits its stride. oh, and not only are there Vulcans, there are some very specific Vulcans in this series...

There are many reasons I enjoy watching reaction videos, but my favorite has to be when someone, like you, points out something I’d never seen before. I was around 14-15 when this episode first aired on TV. 35ish years later, and you point out the music theme switch during the saucer separation! Wow, how did I miss that all these years?? Neat! Star Trek is an amazing journey!! Gets soooooo good!!

This was my introduction to Star Trek when I was a kid and instantly loved it. Funny story, it aired at 11am on Sundays and I would always grumble I couldn't watch the whole episode because we had to be at church for noon mass.

Glad You are starting into the next generation for Star Trek! When you get far enough along, You're going to want to watch the next generation movies, there are four of them... And the first one, Star Trek Generations brings in members of the old original crew and shows the transition of the generations.

Even if you don't do reactions to them, I encourage you to watch every episode. There's more continuity between episodes to this show than there was to TOS, especially if you're going to eventually continue on to DS9 and Voyager, which I sincerely hope you do. It's a heck of a journey and while not every single episode is great, they're all worth watching at least once.

I always get a little jealous when someone gets to watch these for the first time! Such an amazing show that just gets better and better each season! DS9 & Voyager are really good too!

The first two seasons are pretty ropey in places (mainly because Gene Roddenberry seemed to be still stuck in the 60s when it came to plotting), but after that it rapidly goes into warp drive.

I am so excited to re-watch this with you Jen. This is my childhood Trek and I never tire of it :)

Oh, and keep a close eye on the redshirt who was on the battle bridge with the others early on. He'll show up again quite a few times in the series as a major supporting character - Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien - and become a main cast member on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which I HIGHLY recommend you watch after TNG or even at the same time (since they did air simultaneously during TNG's last 2 seasons).

Make sure to watch more episodes of this first season with the understanding that late in the 2nd season and especially 3rd season and beyond is where the writing gets very strong and you fall in love with the characters and cast as they have so much more depth. I figured you would enjoy this series, Jen, but I’m a tad surprised that you clearly love it from the first episode! I saw it when it was originally shown in 1987, and I liked the show, but didn’t quite come to outright love it until around the third season, when it had settled into itself and discarded a few things that didn’t quite work before, plus Riker had grown a beard, and the uniforms were redesigned and became a bit less Spandex-y, but also more alien races had been introduced by then and we got to know the characters much better, and we began to get a better understanding of how the Star Trek universe was organized and how everyone related to each other and so on. The series ran for 7 seasons, 4 seasons longer than The Original Series (TOS), so obviously they did something right. Once you finish with the final season, THEN see STAR TREK GENERATIONS (1994), which segues perfectly from the series and is a real emotional roller coaster, and then continue with STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), which most fans consider the very best of the Next Generation theatrical films (as do I). By then you’ll also want to start your deep dive into STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, which began in 1993. Some of the characters from TNG are in that series, along with plenty of new ones, and you’ll be able to see another side of the Federation and the various alien species and threats to the Federation encountered in that series.

This is actually a pretty damn good pilot that has really grown on me. Yeah, its a bit wonky in parts, but it does a good job introducing the characters, the setting and new Technology, has great Special Effects for the time, some beautiful music (Dennis McCarthy making his debut here, by 2005 he would have scored literally hundreds of Episodes) while telling a Story that is TREK to its core at the same time. Plus, most importantly, it introduces Q! And that Data/McCoy-Scene never fails to pull at my heartstrings. Overall, I can already say this: TNG is epic. Objectively, _Deep Space Nine_ is probably my favourite of all the Trek-Shows... but somehow TNG is closer to my heart.

Tng was one of my earliest memories...watching it again recently it's now my favorite show of all time. I'm sure someone already mentioned this but from the 2nd season on there's some real mind-blowing content. Glad to see someone discovering this masterpiece :)

This was such a fun watch. I am so happy that you're watching this series. It is one of my all-time favorite shows, and this really took me back to that Monday night at my grandmother's house when I decided to checkout this new Star Trek. I wasn't sure it would be good without the old crew, but it had Levar Burton from Reading Rainbow, so I was definitely going to see what he was up to. I'm excited to see you get to know the characters. It only gets better.

A lot of people categorically hate season one, but not me. Although it had its problems. I predict you'll enjoy Encounter At Farpoint and be thrilled at at least one of its surprises.

I remember as a twenty-something having a few misgivings about this new Trek when it premiered. It was dispelled after this pilot. Jen, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised on how good it gets. A fun fact, it was planned that the original Enterprise would be able to separate the saucer and land on a planet, but it was too costly. That is when the transporter and shuttlecraft came into being.

Encounter at Farpoint has gained a bad reputation which I really don't agree with. I only saw it AFTER seeing the really good fourth and fifth seasons and I was still blown away by it. The aesthetics of the Enterprise, the saucer-separation sequence, you really feel this is a far more advanced future than even TOS (and that's something Trek has never recaptured). It also has some great character introductions, especially when Riker meets Data.

The theme to The Next Generation was originally in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and was written by Jerry Goldsmith. Captain Jean-Luc Picard is 'different' because he's more of a diplomat, which they show more throughout the series.

Jen, everybody else has filled you in on the quality of the TNG seasons to come. Instead, I'll reminisce about many people's early reaction to Patrick Stewart, as Captain Picard. I suppose we were all expecting another young-looking captain, like Kirk, to step out of that shadow in that first scene. So for many of us in 1987, we got a jolt when we first saw Captain Picard-"He's bald!" Soon a meme was going, "To BALDLY Go Where No Man Has Gone Before." And I vividly remember a bumper sticker on a car that I walked by most mornings, with an image of Captain Picard, and the slogan, "REAL Captains Don't NEED Hair!" By the time we got to season 2 of TNG, we were getting glimpses of the truly great actor that Patrick Stewart is. And as the series goes on, you'll see some of the best scenes in all of Star Trek history, carried by Sir Patrick's acting. BTW, I don't think male baldness is considered so unattractive today, as compared to 1987, and I suspect Patrick Stewart's years in the spotlight on TNG were a big reason why.
