Right on! THAT is Star Trek. The modern shows (yuk) should take a cue from this episode, with big ideas, moral dilemmas, and dont tell you how to think, but give you something to think ABOUT. This episode, if someone has never watched it before, and I had to pick an episode to show them the essence, that would be it.

@@ChrisS-no3ftactually strange new worlds got the formula right. They fixed the direction that discovery went. And in fact had their own court room episode which was in at least the same league as this episode. Not quite as good but close. The line that hits the most for me is, "That action injured you, and saved me. I will not forget it." Data's true gift was crystal clear understanding of events. Riker was feeling guilty, and Data cut through it knowing that in the grand scheme of things, he did him a solid. Data is the realest one.

Data is the truest friend you could hope to have. His logic wouldn't allow Riker to wallow in self pity for the predicament he had almost put Data in, and he presented it to the sullen Riker in a way that evaporated his remorse and allowed him to see the nobility in his actions, when all Riker felt was his bitterness in being bound to the trial duty of taking a legal stand against his friend. So wholesome to see Riker beaming as arm in arm the two friends went to Data's party in that final scene. May we all have a friend like this❤️

I do understand why they started with LeVar on the bridge. When TNG started, he was probably the most well know actor in the cast due to Reading Rainbow. But moving him over to engineering was amazing, they noticed LeVar was pretty good in the technobabble and having him the chief engineer really helped out to flesh out how well LeVar and Spiner gelled with eachother. Besides the obvious Kirk - Spock - Bones triumvirate (unavoidable, because a core element of the series design), I think only O'Brian-Bashir did it better (completely unexpected, but the actors and characters just clicked during the early seasons of DS9).

The reaction that Riker had when he discovered Data's "Off Switch" was well played. Not many actors pull that off quite that well. The elation of finding his ace in the hole and then getting excited and THEN the immediate realization of what he just felt.
@dominantprime
@dominantprime 3 ай бұрын
I have to respectfully disagree. They played it completely wrong. No way would Riker smile/get excited at the prospect of winning the case. He just got done explaining he has no desire to prosecute at all since Data is his friend. I guess they felt the need to be heavy heanded / completely over the top to make sure even the dumbest in the audience realized he found something, but in doing so they lowered Riker's IQ by about 100 points to borderline mental disability levels. If I was the director, I'd say show him curious about reading something big he has found, but then immediately go dark at the realization. Smiling is just completely out of place and out of character. One of the only few issues I have with this otherwise great episode.

And in that Moment he believed he FOUND something and for just a brief second he was excited. You can literally SEE that reaction. Do NOT try and pretend otherwise; that is exactly what eb=veryone SEES. Then realizing he got excited about what he found and what it would mean for Data he felt sickened with himself. He does not WANT to win the case. So please explain why he would be happy to win a case he does not want to win? Did he suddenly get replaced by a doppelganger that actually WANTS to win the case and murder Data? And just as quickly, he gets replaced back with his own self? the best part about TNG was how eloquent everyone is and how great they are at communication and working to resolve interpersonal issues and conflict. It was a great show to help younger guys like myself back in the day in those areas. the fact also that Data was often the catalyst for these scenarios.. as a "learning being" was a great way for the audience to connect and learn along with him in a sense. there's a lot of kooky stuff in star trek in general but I've always appreciated Roddenberry's vision for the show in that respect: depicting a future where people valued and respected others.. and strived for peace and harmony while still appreciating different races and personalities for who/what they are. (and even showing "grace" to races and people who were difficult or troublesome)

'Ship shape & Bristol fashion' is a phrase meaning in good and seamanlike order with reference to the condition of a ship. The expression had its origin when Bristol was the major west coast port of Britain at a time when all its shipping was maintained in good order. Some Bristol born friends of mine were visiting the ST TNG sets when they were shooting this episode and got to meet Patrick Stewart afterwards. He's got connections to Bristol, having acted here frequently at the Bristol Old Vic theatre.

Fact is that the old port of Bristol, on the Severn Estuary, had a tidal fall of about thirty two feet, meaning that some ships broke their spars on the quays when the tide went out. To avoid this, the spars would be folded, literally inside the 'ship shape.' So while today it is meant as 'in good order' originally to be "Ship shape and Bristol Fashion" meant 'properly prepared.' Sincerely, a naitive Bristolian.

I love to pass this on: that the college that I went to in California is the origin of the name "Borg". There's a building on the Pomona College campus of the Claremont Colleges which is called Oldenborg Center (the 'Borg for short), and it is a big cube and it is full of exchange students and international students, so nobody really talks to each other cuz no one speaks the same language, and people just sort of pass each other in the halls with their faces in whatever they're studying, but they all have the same goal in mind and are very serious about it... and apparently this image really stuck with some of the guys who were working on TNG, and they brought it with them and inspired the Borg of the Trek'verse. I love telling that story because I've been to that building and I get it.

If you're going to watch just ONE Sherlock Holmes show, you MUST start with Jeremy Brett's portrayal in Granada TV's "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1984-85). The episode list and movies are too numerous to list here, but if you start with any random episode from season 1 you'll be most pleased. It is the most faithful and most authentic adaptation of the original stories among any production out there and will never be matched.

The crazy thing about that scene is it was not in the original script. They told the writer (Melinda M. Snodgrass) that they had Whoopi Goldberg coming in that week (they suddenly realized she had to be in it to fill their contract with her), so quickly write her a scene to get her in this episode. So she wrote that Picard/Guinan scene.

There was an early episode with Data where it was shown, in a round about sort of way, that he had actual feelings and really didn't need the plot device that comes along later in the series. Data was captured and put in an illegal, private art collection. The evil Collector's female assistant, who has befriended Data, helps him escape and is murdered by the Collector in the process. While Data is pointing his phaser at the Collector, he is beamed back to the Enterprise. As Data is in the transporter's pattern buffer, the computer says that the weapon had fired and it was set to kill.
@lancebakore497
@lancebakore497 3 ай бұрын
I never viewed that as an act driven by emotion, but by pure emotionless logic. The collector was guilty of many things, and murder was the final atrocity that he would commit. As Starfleet and the Federation have no death penalty, Data was going to be sure that, to save others, he would execute The Collector and he would trouble no one ever again. Or Data was telling the truth that the prototype Mark IV Disruptor malfunctioned due to the transporter. We'll never know, and that's the beauty of science fiction: when it is well done, it allows the viewers or readers to draw their own conclusions.

Q Who is a significant moment in Star Trek history, because it is the first time the Federation is put against a true existential threat. It and the two parter Best of Both Worlds (which you ABSOLUTELY MUST watch) give a sudden, very real sense that the Federation can be utterly destroyed, and very quickly. The introduction of the Borg changed Star Trek, and raised the stakes drastically. Q Who and Best of Both Worlds are also required viewing for the film Star Trek: First Contact. I’ll also add that I’ve always interpreted Q’s purpose here as warning the Federation. You remember them looking at the ruined planet and saying it was identical to what happened to the outposts along the Neutral Zone? That strongly implies that the Borg were already on the Federation’s doorstep. If Q hadn’t done what he did here, it is likely that the Federation would have been caught completely off guard, and much sooner than any of them might realize.

So, the term “jumping the shark” refers to the show “Happy Days” when the character known as the Fonz infamously jumped over a shark on water skis in a particular episode. This signifies the point in a show or long-standing franchise when it defies logic and starts to go downhill. I mention this because in this season of TNG, Riker grew a beard and, coincidentally or not, the show not only improved from what came before, but gradually got better as the show progressed. Since then, the term “growing a beard” has become the opposite of “jumping the shark” regarding the quality of a TV show and/or franchise. Anyway, glad you’re still enjoying TNG. @mannyromero4511 if I were prosecuting and you presented those arguments I would counter with salvage rights. @@aaronhusk well that is the contention of the prosecution and the stated findings of the JAG office. And because these were the previous findings the burden of proof rests with the contention that Data is not, and if an argument is made using the circumstances of his discovery as evidence is insufficient to do so Asserting the circumstances of Data and Worf as equivalent presupposes the outcome of the hearing

@@tomsamper4345that could be said, but it also could be argued that Data is more than just basic salvaged parts. Much like themes within the these episodes, the difference between Data and say a dishwasher or computer is a human presence; sentience. He has a conciseness, free will, and learns through events the same way humans do. While Data was created, he was created as an individual without ownership. Data is one of a kind. Even though there might be a similar android to Data, Data himself is an individual and independent entity. Another Data could be made and placed through the similar “life” events and a completely different “personality” could/would emerge. Those traits along with being made to be an individual, he can not be anyone’s property but his own, regardless of his originally created purpose. While this makes for fun debates, it’s going to be actual discussion as AI is applied android like mechanics.

One random thing which I don't think was covered, the tactical officer in relief of Worf was Diedrich Bader, most famously of The Drew Carey Show but also a rather prolific voice actor later on. I would bet he was cast for the fact that he had a voice just deep enough to throw people off for a few seconds but obviously not Worf's once you saw him. But he had a really good quote about his role: "Loved that gig. I hadn't eaten in a while and I ate like a prince and stole cold cuts in a donut box."

Contagion is a solid choice, but I think Emissary is more important than "A Matter of Honor" due to it being one of the first Worf focused, introducing Key'lar, and what that leads to. A Matter of Honor is good in that it starts to "Humanise" Klingons, make them more relatable, but other than being the reason Kurn is on the Enterprise later, has little lasting impact.

If Daniel Davis, who plays Moriarty, looks familiar, it might be from "The Hunt for Red October", in which, ironically, he plays the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. And I learned there's a way to calculate stardates to determine the standard month and day on which a particular episode takes place: take the last three digits plus the decimal, divide by 1,000, and then multiply by 365 (or 366 for leap years); thus, "Elementary, Dear Data" takes place on June 13, 2365.

Guinan is a mysterious and very interesting character and Q is a character that grows on you after a while. He reminds me of a trickster god. He doesn't necessarily mean humans harm, though his presence often causes danger. In any event, I'm glad you're doing this series. I hope you will watch an episode called "the inner light".
