And the lesson to be learned here? Never underestimate, or piss off, James T. Kirk.

The single most sad part for any old school Trek fan, that and Kirk passing away in Generations.

This is probably one of the most iconic scenes in television-to-big-screen franchises ever. From the moment Kirk engages the computer with the destruction code and we see the expressions on both Scotty and Chekov's faces we know this is it. The expression on Scotty's face is one of resoluteness in he knows what Kirk is doing is right. Chekov still shows a bit of his youth in the expression of disbelief that Kirk is going to blow up the Enterprise, their home and refuge for the last two decades. But then each man knows they have a part to play. When the interior of the bridge begins to explode, we're not that fazed because we've seen the bridge destroyed before in the prior film. But the part that always chokes me up is when we see the outside of the bridge imploding then exploding out, we know she's done. The sizzling of her name and registry number is just heartbreaking and horrifying to watch. Then the front part of the saucer section explodes up, then is utterly destroyed as she begins her dive. The scene on that promentory when Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov watch as the old girl, The Enterprise takes her final dive is just so sad, but knowing she won't fall into the hands of Kruge is so satisfying. I think the line that always gets me though is Sarek's at the end to Kirk: Sarek: Kirk, I thank you. What you have done is... Kirk: What I have done, I had to do. Sarek: But at what cost? Your ship. Your son. Kirk: If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul. This film epitomizes everything I've believed about what this thing known as the human condition should be. Family doing what family has to do for one another. And by family, I mean the family of man. This is one of those films that is the exemplar of what we as humans should be but sadly aren't. Of course the true heart of this film is Leonard Nimoy and his dedication to bringing us one of the most important films of this franchise. Thank you to both Mr. Nimoy and Mr. Horner for if not the most gut wrenching scenes ever to appear on celluloid.

It's absolutely brilliant the way Shatner delivers that line when he gives the final code. He puts the perfect amount of emotional emphasis on the word "destruct." It carries all the momunental weight and burden of what he's about to do.

One of the greatest scenes in movie history. It gives you such a large array of different emotions from anger, despair and heartache to hope and happiness.

3:06 is the part that breaks my heart where the Enterprise's name and registry number ruptures as the saucer section is about to explode. I actually hate and like this sequence at the same time. I hate it because it's the death of Enterprise and I also like it because it's so brilliantly done. I find it much more emotional than the Enterprise-D destruction in Generations.

Enterprise goes like any ship ship should. Saving others, in rescue or battle. Not farmed out to a ship breaker like an old horse to a knackers yard.

Those are the same destruct codes used in "Let that be your last battlefield"

I grew up watching TOS and the "Original Crew" Movies. The fate of the original Enterprise was always a defining moment for me and still one of my favorite scenes from the movie series.

Kirk is has some of the biggest balls in the universe. He knows his career is over but his love for his friend Spock keeps him going

The fear in Lloyd’s voice when he realizes what Kirk has done. He may have ruled his crew with an iron fist, as a Klingon would, but his care for his people was clear in that moment.

Kirk's long character arc comes to fruition, the greatest fear was always loosing his ship yet he faces it and still comes through victorious

Man just seeing the looks on the faces of the crew seeing they're beloved Starship burning across the sky like that was heart wrenching especially on Scotty as we all know how much he loved that ship just like Kirk did.

Star Trek 3 was a great movie, sans the ending. It had alot of heart and deserves a better reputation than it received. Star Trek 2, 3, and 4 are the golden age of Star Trek.

The sounds and visuals of the Enterprise destruction remain so incredible after all this time

The 1st time I saw this in the Theater, there was an audible Gasp in the Audience when Kirk said, "Computer... Destruct Sequence One..."

One of the best parts about this scene is the fact that just as Kirk knew the bird of prey typically had about a dozen crew members when sulu told him that, the klingons knew a federation ship of that size had about 400. But of course they didn't realize it was just Kirk and a handful of his crew cause they stole the Enterprise made it bittersweet and just plain awesome

I remember watching this in the cinema, and feeling the utter despair and horror of everything that was lost, with that enterprise.

I saw this as a child in the theatre with my father and his mother. Heartbreaking. But, there was still hope after all was seemingly lost.

Minor point. They use the exact destruct code from the TOS episode Let This Be Your Last Battlefield, but here Scotty gives Spock's code and Chekov gives Scotty's code, despite him being acting science officer. The only thing I can think of is that the codes are given in descending order of rank.

I remember this scene when I saw it in the theater. At 3:05, when the name and regristry number begin to burn up, the audible gasp from the audience was incredible and then silence as the Enterprise burned up in the Genesis Planet atmosphere 🌎

My all time favorite movie trilogy: Star Trek 2, 3 and 4. Watch them back-to-back. Epic storytelling.

Whenever I see this scene, I remember the 'Naked Time' episode, where the Enterprise was about to burn up as she was spiraling down to the planet. Just as Kirk regained his composure from the effects of the virus.... He says to the Enterprise, " I will never lose you" I know there were no other options than to self destruct the ship, but it always feels like he broke his promise! Lol

I was glad that they gave the enterprise a woman's voice when she finally got to speak. Her ongoing missions were finally at an end.

What an amazing series of events with TWoK and TSFS. Spock dies and then the Enterprise is destroyed. Just absolutely amazing stuff!

I have seen this so many times but I'll find it the first time when Kirk looks to Scotty and Scotty goes gives out a quick sigh before he begins his district code.. in that brief sigh he knows it's the right thing to do at the same it was heartbreaking to do so

The original Star Trek films have aged very well. They were panned by younger sci-fans at the height of the Star Wars era, including me. But they are all worthy of another look and I like all of them that feature the original cast. I also think the Picard era was good, as well as the recent JJ Abrams reboot.

All three of them, even Kirk who ordered the Enterprise's destruction, look like they're in shock that they're doing this and are just going through the motions.

Back in the good old days when a death, in this case the Enterprise, had the power to shock and dismay. Now it's expected that there will be an entirely gratuitous death or two that is there simply to buy a shot of surprise.

Even if he had given the order to his men to get out there to leave the Enterprise it wouldn't have mattered as by the time they got back to the transporter room the Enterprise would have been exploding by then so they were already dead before they could even escape.

Kirk is facing the ''No Win Scenario '' his ship is disabled ,his son is murdered Spock and Savik are the remaining prisoners or hostages the Klingons are going to board the Enterprise capture Kirk and the rest of the crew as prisoners take all the info out of the Enterprise computer later destroy her maybe and take Kirk his crew and the remaining two prisoners below back to Kronos maybe so Kirk has to sacrifice something to save everyone and prevent technology from falling into enemies hands

I remember seeing this in the theatre when it was first released. When Kirk blew up the Enterprise I cried. Still is hard to watch this.

Turns out the Enterprise's self-destruct only blows up the bridge and about half the saucer section.

Kirk saved who he could and that was more important than a ship. :) Well done.

Yes, Jim. What HAVE you done? An emotional scene when so much of the stories have involved this iconic ship. How many forms will he have to fill in to justify the destruction of what I assume was a very expensive vessel?

Something just occurred to me. Isn't the Enterprise crashing into the planet with its warp core still intact? If that's breached, it's gonna go off with a hell of a bang.

In TOS, Kirk, Spock and Scott used the exact same codes for the self-destruct. But it was a 30 second countdown, not 1 minute.

The Battle of the Genesis Planet most likely never would have happened and the Enterprise would have survived if Starfleet had accepted Kirk's requests to repair the Enterprise and not decommission her in favor of the new U.S.S. Excelsior NX-2000 and for Kirk's request for both Spock and McCoy but instead they just decided to ignore Kirk's requests and quietly bury everything including all the sacrifices the Enterprise and her crew made and with that Starfleet Admiral who thinks Spock was dead and gone and not believing in 'Vulcan Mysticism' as he stated it and that Kirk should just forget and move on man that guy was a real jerk.

It is said the uneven numbered star treks are bad but I enjoyed this one.

I liked these movies when they came out, but in retrospect the sacrifices were undone, so they no longer mean anything. Also, _The Wrath of Khan_ was a series of stupid decisions and mistakes. I wish someone would take several clips and put them together to show how dumb Khan's defeat was: The Enterprise rises up, Khan says "There she is", then "Aft torpedoes, fire," then we see the saucer section blow up, like we just saw in _The Search for Spock._

I hate this for one reason. The best Enterprise in Star Trek, gone.

Since those were the same codes as was in the tv episode, This Will Be Your Last Battlefield, as Kirk said before the five seconds mark, the computer could be halted. The Kingons actually had three seconds to stop the final destruct sequence.

When I was a kid watching I think"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" I thought.No .They'd never do that (self destruct) because there were more episodes coming So I was shocked when they did it in the movies

Admiral Kirk's predecessors, Robert M. April & Christopher pike, would've been disappointed to hear that the Enterprise had to be destroyed after 40 years of service to prevent her from being decommissioned due to her battle damage from the Reliant or captured by the Klingons.

Although there was a 60 second countdown, around 2 minutes actually pass between the countdown beginning and ending.

You killed Kirk's son, Kirk kills your crew. Even if it means sacrificing the Enterprise.
