There's an issue with the video around 9 minutes 30 seconds in - it freezes on a frame for 20 seconds or so, during the first scene on the Klingon ship.

I remember when seeing this in the theater and thinking why everyone would be so amazed by the scene of a barren desert. Looks more like hell than heaven. But perhaps that was the point. We are all fooled by the attraction of hell and tricked into to thinking it heaven.

"And it seemed real. It seemed like us and it seemed like, well, our home. If not Arizona, then a land not too far away. Where all parents are strong and wise and capable, and all children are happy and beloved. I don't know ...Maybe it was Utah." 😆

I rolled when I heard it.

His delivery of that line is epic, great stuff.

All the times McCoy has appeared, they've always gotten his banter with Spock nailed. Even in his cameo in Encounter At Farpoint when he remarks that Data reminds him of Spock.

I love how they planted that as a pretty funny line on it's own, but at the same time venturing into the philosophical theme of the movie 😄

I hate this movie partly for the first two reasons you said you liked it. As for the 3rd, it was such a corny way to do it, it ended up making me cringe so hard. And the rest of the movie.... Lots of really bad jokes. Making the entire crew except Kirk and Spock simps to fall for Sybok's religious nonsense. The idea that there is a planet at the center of the galaxy is laughable. I don't have enough power in my fingers to type all the awful things about this film.

You can't be too hard on William Shatner for this movie, he did as good as anyone could with the script and very low budget he was given.

Your attempted excuses for Shatner are weaker than the movie he directed.

​@@markhamstra1083you totally can give Shatner a break. If you have ever read the Tek War novels, you would know that he can actually write good dialogue. The studio forced him to cut too much and cut corners on the production. We are seeing only 70% of what Shatner actually wanted.

And yet, Spock's pain involved his father during birth. So you have McCoy and his father during death and Spock and his father during birth. It shows that they are truly two sides of the same coin.

Bill Quinn's last movie. He was the cranky old man in the "Kick the Can" story in Twilight Zone: The Movie. I remember losing my mind trying to place him when I saw ST5 on opening weekend. Should have had better lines and other coulda-woulda-shouldas. I hated the dinner theater quality of the scene.

Tupac Shakur uses that sound byte for the opening of his title track “Pain”. I never knew what movie he got it from until I became a Star Trek fan.

He doesn't really realise it's a lie, the creature tells him straight up. Up until that point he is still questioning why it has hurt his friends. But yes, he immediately acts once he knows.

Is that not the best? I've worked with some celebrities and other famous people, but I've only had one experience where one of them sat and hung out with me as a perfect stranger, with no prior professional relationship to get in the way, just two guys talking. It was comedian Dick Gregory. We talked about nutritional supplements and conspiracy theories, but it wasn't one of those weird conversations, he was a brilliant man and very down-to-earth. RIP to an absolute legend. I would have enjoyed just listening to you chat with James Doohan.

I met him as well. A very nice man smiles and joked with every fan after the convention. circa 1977. it was at CWU. After the presentation there was a Q an A. He asked " sir, I've got the blueprints to the starship Enterprise. I've gone over them a hundred times, but I cannot find a toilet anywhere! How did the crew deal with ..eh hem...the call of nature?" James.aks Scotty replied " well...we set our phasers on disintegrate and aimed very carefully. " !!!! ha ha ha! everyone was delighted.

Met DeForest at a convention. He did not sig autographs because he could only do it so long and didn't want to disappoint anyone if they were turned away. I however had presented him earlier, a framed drawing of him from my Star Trek comic strip 'Enterprise.' He was very delighted by it and asked me to autograph it for him! The next morning as I was checking out of the hotel, he shows up right next to me to do the same. I braved showing him another drawing of his character that I had hoped to also have autographed for myself, and because I had actually given him something earlier, he obliged.

This scene really resonated with me after my mother died a couple of years after this movie came out.

I always thought it was kind of a bummer of a line, actually. It's definitely the most Kirk thing to say, though. I'd rather keep the memories and lessons of life but not the pain that goes with it. At least that's the goal. 🤷‍♀

He also lost a finger in the war. You can sometimes catch a frame of it missing in some TOS scenes.

I read that he wore a prosthetic glove to disguise it sometimes. I had a guided battlefield tour of Juno ( code name ), the Canadian forces landing beach. Its a weird feeling how close it is in practical history, being just a couple of generations removed.@@Jakyre1983

Whilst in gunnery school in England prior to D-Day he met a scottish officer on the same course. He used his experience of this voice to help create 'Scotty's accent.

I didn't know that. He did have a Celtic background himself though, being of Irish immigrant stock to Canada - and you know how those of Celtic heritage often maintain it well in the new world. Actually this triggered memory of the story behind John Cleese's 'Basil Fawlty' character. The Monty Python team had been filming on the south coast and some were put up in a hotel owned by a rude and eccentric former naval officer, who regarded anything guests needed as a nuisance. Most of the crew moved out, but Cleese and another remained to study the man ! Thus Fawlty was born.@@RichardBrake-fo4iw

yeah I like this movie. It has so many good character moments and I like to see the crew on shore leave camping.

As someone who had a personal relationship issue that was devastating, I can relate. It’s made me stronger and less prone to trusting just because someone says they care about you.

That may be DeForest Kelley's single best performance across the entire franchise. And I agree, the character beats were great, especially between the Trio.

Kirk's speech as well about needing their pain, particularly if you come into the movies as a fan of the original series. His wife, two children, his brother and sister-in-law, Edith, he's a man with a lot of pain. Though I recall Spock easing his pain about Edith if not removing it at the end of that episode.

Nope, that wasn't Edith. "City" ends with Kirk saying "Let's get the he'll out of here." Spock melds with a sleeping Kirk at the end of "Requiem for Methuselah" and commands him to forget Rayna Kapek.

Must've blended together in my head over the years.

Yeah I like the movie but it needed a few more drafts. I think inserting the Klingon villains at the climax was a copout. The battle and the resolution should have been against "god". How do you beat a god-like being? It would have brought on some interesting tactics. Maybe Kirk could work together with the Klingons.

According to beta canon, it is yet another of the great and powerful beings encountered all over in Trek like Trelane. In this case though, the being stuck there was imprisoned there by the Q Continuum according to the beta canon.

It was actually friendly fire from a nervous sentry, he was shot 6 times, 4 in the leg, 1 in the finger and 1 in the chest that was stopped by his cigarette case.

You get a real clear view of it in another episode she watched. Space Seed. When they gas the conference room that Khan is in and they run into the hallway and Kirk talks to Scotty it’s plain as day.

Also in Star Trek 3 when he hands Kirk the part he took from Excelsior.

How did Scotty get into WW2?? Was it time travel?

My favorite line is "I don't want my pain taken away, I need my pain!" It says so much about Kirk's character.

It dates back at least to WWI and It has very few lyrics, because a lot of it is made up by using your companions names or nicknames, to provide the verses, as Cassie demonstrated here with "Cassie" and "sassy" and depending on who you are with, can be clean or more risque/suggestive.

Which, along with Star Wars, was inspired by Gustav Holst’s The planets.

Too bad Blizzard Entertainment ruined that line forever by having a power hungry emo creep reject the healing power of the Holy Light by crying “I *am* my scars!” like he’s Kylo Ren and he just lost his guyliner.

The ST5 novelization is a cornucopia of apocrypha including what I assume was post facto plotting for a back story to the campfire in which Bones hatches a nutty and ultimately inane plan to punk Spock by programming the food replicator to make him think marshmallows were called marshmelons. So much novelization drek in that time period. I even read "Encounter at Farpoint". The mind reels.

The movie poster in lobbies said, "Why are they putting seat belts in theaters this summer? STAR TREK V!"

The theatercial cut is better. Because they added footage dosent mean it makes the film better. Theatercial cut is always the answer.

All Vulcans have Telepathic powers. They also have incredibly volatile emotions that can cause them great pain. They don't like experiencing their own emotions, let alone others.

Spock's brother was an outcast, a sociopath. He was Vulcan by species, not by practice.

Nice to see some positive words for V. It's certainly flawed, and the conclusion is a bit half-baked, but the concept is so good that I can't help but appreciate what it's trying to accomplish.

It gets a lot of hate, some rightly so, like the terrible FX co they ended up having to use an inexperienced FX co. But I always watch and enjoy it, I call it a great Sunday afternoon film, relexed and watching lying down on the sofa.

I really think that Laurence Lukenbill played Sybok perfectly. He's intense, charismatic and surprisingly sincere despite his megalomania. I've come to really appreciate his performance.

@@HermanVonPetri Yes indeed, and I love the soundtrack as well. Shatner gets blame as director, some of it rightly, but I think I read some where there was behind the scenes stuff like budget etc… out of his control that did not help.

Spot on. There's so much to enjoy in this. One, a fascinating idea at the heart of the story, two, amazing performances by the cast, three, another of Jerry Goldsmith's beautiful, masterful scores, four, the first appearance of the assault phaser, and five, most importantly, without this film we never would have heard of marsh melons. I love this flick.

I always saw it very much like Superman IV: the Quest for Peace. Neither that movie or STV:The Final Frontier were very good films, *but both plots were quintessential for their respective franchises.* An 80s movie about Superman had to address Superman getting rid of nuclear weapons. And Star Trek's quintessential script, especially given that its creator was a staunch atheist, had to take on the concept of God. I give STV more credit than I ever have, *because they made a movie THAT COULD NOT HAVE A GOOD ENDING.* If they found God, it would 1) anger people and 2) not serve the vision of Star Trek's creator. If they _didn't_ find God, instead saying that he doesn't exist (which the movie does in subtext), they would still anger...the _same_ people. Because of that, it is easily my favorite of the lackluster Star Trek movies. And one day, it will be accepted in honor as it should be.

I like where it landed, though it would have been MUCH better had Spock n McCoy pretended to be loyal to Sybok… What a hot mess of a movie, but still better than 99% of modern cinema.

I have to admit, Cassie's look of bewilderment, her mouthing the word three, followed by the gesture made me crack up laughing too. She has wonderful comedic timing.

It wasn't so much that he turned it down, it's that he simply wasn't available. He was busy making some other film with Harrison Ford at the time.... Also, after Paramount slashed the budget they couldn't have afforded him, even if he were.

And Lucille Ball is the reason that Star Trek even exists as her studio, Desilu, was the one that produced the original series, and had faith in it even when the networks were hard to convince.

@@TheCkent100 The Arnazs are responsible for a LOT of sci-fi history. "The Time Element", which was essentially the pilot for "The Twilight Zone", aired as part of a live-drama anthology show that Desi produced and hosted.

And to say it's the "worst" would be to pretend the JJverse never happened (which would be for the better, IMO) If you ask me, V rivals The One With the Whales for comedy! I hated this movie like most everyone else, despite the nod to Midnight Oil, but I confess that this delivery by James Doohan made me chuckle out loud in the theater along with most everyone else. But even the "I need my pain" speech only gained respect once distance from the plot was achieved in the minds of fans. Maybe we can blame this on first-time director William "I directed a few TJ Hookers" Shatner? It was a bad move, for sure, but it's unfair to put it all on Bill. ST4 worked so well because ST2 and 3 took such a toll on the collective hearts of the legions of Boomer and GenX Trekkie-dom. Stakes were raised!! Brilliantly orchestrated tension gave everyone nosebleeds and sinus headaches!! Savek got a facelift!! So many once-beloved TV stars from the early 80's kept trying to blow up the Enterprise that Kirk went ahead and did it himself!! After all that, we the audience were desperate for some feelgood marine mammal re-population, Spock-interpreted profanity and madcap chase sequences through a nuclear wessel and brain surgery ward. The executive team behind ST4 read the populace well, so much so that people who has no previous interest in Star Trek bought tickets. Embarrassingly abundant success. All of which spelled disaster for ST5, no matter who ended up directing. Knowing that there was nothing left to milk from the Kahn Trilogy, the creative staff was burdened with charting a fresh path for a greying cast while satisfying what had to have been unruly expectations from studio A&R types and casual movie fans to remake the comedic magic of ST4. Finally, the acceptable but low-key recovery that followed with ST6 set the standard for the disappointingly unambitious TNG films. Never again would a ST story follow a multi-film arc.

This movie was a major disappointment to me after the highs of the first 4 movies (yes, I even liked the first one), but watching this reaction now I am reminded of how many good lines of dialogue there were. It wasn't a total loss, just not as good as the other movies. And the slashed budget did them no favors.

@@duanevpI dunno…. I LOVE Wrath of Khan, but ST6 just has it all: intrigue, action, humor, big stakes, a great villain, everyone gets their moment, and lots of quotable dialogue. It’s really dependent on my mood on the day I am watching them whether I prefer TWOK or TUC. It’s a testament to the two films that they are both just so good. Also: ST5 has aged better than expected. If they ever could do a George Lucas style special edition/remaster of it with cleaned up effects, I think it would be even more appreciated.

That's one thing Doctor Who does very well. It's subtle and the audience has to think about it.

Paramount wanted Industrial Light and Magic for the effects, but it was 1989 and ILM was already booked solid on both Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Ghostbusters II. So they cheaped out, and it shows. The Great Barrier is literally just a solarized negative of some ink squirted in water. Like, that's almost Ed Wood level 😑

I also struggle on whether I like VI or II better...usually it is 6 by a nose. Both were written and directed by Nicholas Meyer. I'll stop talking to avoid accidentally giving away a spolier and look forward to seeing Cassie's reaction to 6!

The music in the beginning is from _Star Trek The Motion Picture._ It was recycled for the TV series. "Mirror, Mirror" is a great episode.

I was not prepared for that. Ended up spitting coffee all over my tablet screen!

It's stuff like that that makes Cassie one of my favorites. Also the cute way she mispronounces stuff and maintains that sweetness despite seeing some horrible things on this channel.
