I really wanted to come back to Star Trek VI because way back when I started these Star Trek Modern Trailers, The Undiscovered Country was my first attempt, and the response was mixed. I'll be honest, I didn't know what my focus was. I think I played it safe flying under the guise of it being a Modern Trailer, which means its okay for it to spoil everything because that's what Modern Trailers do...
Except, it didn't sit well with me. I really took to heart a lot of the feedback and criticism I received and applied it going forward with V, III, IV, First Contact, and II. After going through Wrath of Khan, I knew I needed to circle back to The Undiscovered Country and give it another pass. This time its a bit more of a teaser. This focuses on Kirk dealing with his prejudice with the Klingons over his son's death but being thrust into a peace offering with them. I hope you all enjoy. And as always I enjoy your feedback!

I like that you did not focus on action like a lot of modern trailers but on Kirk and his relationship to the klingons and his prejudices. It's a really good work.

This was beautifully done with raw & intense emotion. I only wish it was longer and showed more of the crew. Otherwise, it was GREAT. i wish I could take this video and travel back in time to give it to Nick Meyer and Paramount.

Thank you, John! The very first one I did of these was a modern trailer for TUC. I enjoyed making it, but it sucked. So I wanted to strip it down to a teaser level that focused on the Kirk plot. I bet of I combined the best parts of both trailers, I'd have the version you want. Thanks again for the kind words and for watching!

This was a fine send off for the TOS CREW! Christopher Plummer was damn good too! Most of all it had a story!😎 NICE TRAILER it shows that it was personal for Kirk and it took a lot for him to deal in peace with the Klingons.

I like how, just like with part two and three they went back and gave some history as it relates to the current movie trailer we are watching as it was probably the most important piece of the puzzle missing for those who have never watched star trek and because it was so much time between those two movies some would need a refresher etc.....as far as the rest of the trailer goes....I like this one, it doesn't give away too much and your left guessing and only the imagination can leave us guessing what will happen.....I would go see it again in theatres.....I just wish the other trailers you did were like this one.....but they gave away the whole movie and nothing left to the imagination.

JESUS YOU FREAKING DID IT. This is...WOW. You nailed everything about how much loss and anger Kirk has inside him. There were two lines I always felt were connected: "I don't want my pain, I NEED MY PAIN," which fed into "Let them die." He couldn't let go until the end of VI, and facing off against Sybok in V, he wasn't there yet. He couldn't forgive Klingons. He wasn't at that point in his grieving.

Thank you, Ben. That's exactly what I was going for. Sell hard in the teaser where we've seen Kirk in the previous films in regards to the Klingons so it builds into the ultimate reason he has to lay go. Thanks again for the kind words and comment.

Beautiful work as always, dude. You're really good at this! One quibble though - I don't think this would be called a teaser. Teasers give you just a glimpse of the film (a few shots, maybe a couple of lines). They don't outline the story and usually aren't more than 30-45 seconds long. I think this would go under the category of a standard trailer.

Tremendous job. Really inspired. ONLY thing that doesn't work for me is the delivery of "you Klingon bastard" that ends in the OTS shot while David Warner's mouth is moving. Yeah, it's an OTS, but the moving mouth still draws the eye and adds a split-second of confusion as to who's speaking.

Your choice to establish the video with Kirk's backstory was a great idea and exceptionally well executed to give some context to the film's plot. The official trailer should have included it. My problem with it is as follows: You established that the Federation is in peace talks with the Klingons and Kirk gets sent to meet them, even though we know he has a grudge. You show them meeting and even eating together, but then you immediately cut to footage of Enterprise apparently firing on a Klingon battle cruiser, and the situation apparently having gone wrong. There should have been a tonal shift at that point in your video but instead it continues on in the same manner. The "We haven't fired line" and all the rest of the footage firmly establishing Kirk's innocence should have been left out in order to make the audience wonder 'What the heck is going on?'
@L1z43vr
@L1z43vr Жыл бұрын
I disagree. For one: it would kinda break Kirk's character, and many of other characters as well, to, in one scene, apparently be trying, emphasis on trying, to negotiate a peace treaty with the Klingons and then suddenly having the Enterprise fire on the Klingons, with the implication being that Kirk ordered them to do so. Kirk is a Starfleet officer, and if someone told him to negotiate with the Klingons, he'd begrudgingly do so, but even with the death of his son, he would not ever harm someone who wasn't an immediate danger to his crew or the Enterprise. I agree that it should have had a tonal shift, however I think the creator of this video should have put the sound of a torpedo being launched, that way it would have been ambiguous to which if it was the Enterprise or not.

You gave away too much in the trailer - especially Gorkan’s death. The best trailers always mislead you - to a certain extent. Some of this might be interesting if you try to play it out as Kirk taking revenge - start with the grief angle, as you did, then splice in some action sequences that make it look like Kirk is settling a personal vendetta - ending with Gorkan’s voice “Don’t let it end this way...” That’s what would get people to the theater. Or settle on a different “mystery”, but you have to have something where people’s expectations are a bit subverted. What you DON’T want to do is to basically summarize the film.

The problem with the "I can never forgive them for the death of my son" line is that no one had asked him for forgiveness. Rather than being a form of self-aware virtue, such a line is a display of unearned guilt. Kirk did nothing wrong and has no one to forgive; no reason to need to consider forgiveness. Had some kind of direct olive branch been offered to him, had his feelings been taken into consideration, perhaps Kirk would think differently. This is not to excuse his collectivism towards Klingons, but rather to observe that movie considers it not up to the Klingons to rise to such a standard, but rather it is the "morally superior" Kirk who is the one who should ignore any sense of justice in order to display that moral superiority. Apparently to be virtuous means to ignore the facts of reality. This movie displays a superiority complex by the Federation in that they are operating on the premise that those not a part of them are not to be treated equally. It is a patronizing view of the potential of Klingons/other races. It is Kirk who has to "get over" something, rather than the Klingons who need to change. It's the civilized Federation that is lower their own standards towards those who they assume cannot meet them, rather than considering it moral to challenge the Klingons to rise to theirs. Moreso than being a cold-war tract, the movie embodies the political and ethical decay of its time; it's no wonder that a dying Roddenberry did not approve and tried to get it changed.

No, I’m not fond of this one. It takes all of the fire, excitement and drama out and covers everything in this dark mournful somber. Coming off the loathed Star Trek V, Undiscovered Country is much beloved. It certainly has many merits, but Meyers' screenplay is sodden with obnoxious and nonsensical literary references. Fun story, but by god does NM want us to be impressed with his education. It used to be my favourite Star Trek movie, but it has fallen far as I've aged. And I find it hard to believe that Kirk's grief would cause him to despise the Klingons enough to _encourage_ genocide by inaction.
