Janeway is really pissed with these two members of the Vidiian Sodality who stole Neelix's lungs to use them on one of them. She's so angry (and possibly sad) almost to the point of tears. Very nice performance.

This is great acting on Kate Mulgrew's part. Outrage, sympathy and desperation all bottled within the decorum and leadership of a Starfleet captain.

Andrew Hall Yeah, this is the fortunate or unfortunate thing about being a captain. All the moral implications rest with them. A captain definitely needs strong shoulders to carry the weight of all morality and not everyone is up to it. Like Sisko said to worf in DS9, once you get 4 pips on that collar, you’d wish you were in botany.

Daniel Appleton. Well, the Borg were driven by the will to assimilate any slightly smart species to reach perfection and absolute dominance, the Vidiians were plain desperate. In our own species, homo sapiens, we see desperate people doing desperate deeds and even crimes on a daily basis. All of those acts are generally immoral. However despicable, some acts can be quite understandible. 🤨🤔

TheDashACorner again; great idea, but as I said before, the Phage takes a metaphorical sledgehammer to the recipient's genetic code, rendering lab grown organs useless because of the body rejecting it as a foreign body.
@TheDashACorner
@TheDashACorner 7 жыл бұрын
digitalrailroader Then the recipient's body would reject a harvested organ as well. Your point makes no sense then. I thought it was about the lack of ability to create an organ out of the recipient's genetic code because it was already destroyed. If you can use harvested organs, you could also use exact copies of one harvested organ.

Matthew Sexton Do you never discuss anything fictional? Especially Star Trek. The main purpose of this show was social criticism. Sure we aren't discussing this part at the moment but telling us to stop discussing because it is too much for you is typical ignorant behavior. It doesn't matter at all if it is a show or not. If there are logic holes then it is just bad writing.

@AzguardMike

the moment the Vidian's attacked Voyager, the Prime Directive is irrelevant. Contact has been made. Now its about dealing with it. They are more advanced in some respect to Earth, their medical tech for one. Personally, I'd of pulled a Equinox. Kill the lead Vidian doctor and mortally wound its assistant, leaving it to deliver the warning with its dying breathe. And in future encounters it would be a case of "We are in Vidian space, shields up, weapons charged, torpedoes armed, carrying phasers as standard uniform 24/7 set on KILL.

I love Janeway so much. She's a huge personality. Very corageous, very protective and fierce as hell. Exceptionally smart, compassionate. And even then there's a vulnerability to her. She's also headstrong and the woman likes to win. And she does! And when she wins, you love her even more, because she makes you root for her. I love when she gets up close to people and analyses their faces. She's very expressive with her body, and it's just perfect. I believe every second of Kate Mulgrew's performance. She found a way to make the first female captain arguably the best captain, or a least share that spot. For me, she shares it with Picard.

Kirk>Janeway>Sisko>Picard>Archer Kirk would have found a way to get his crew home in one episode, probably by having the guest star stay aboard the array to blow it up after sending the Enterprise back in some act of repentance for what they did earlier in the episode. He's the best because he's gotten his people out of the most bizarre situations (turned into salt cubes) and faced the deadliest perils (poor redshirts). Janeway ripped the Borg a new one, survived the horrors of the Delta quadrant and kept it together for decades then time travelled for a do-over to save her crew. Sisko was the strategic mastermind that saved the Federation and Bajor from the Dominion. Picard, an able diplomat, had to deal with a fair range of situations, got a lot done with his wits. Had the most capable crew since Kirk. Archer... gets beat up a lot.

I prefer Picard, than Sisko myself. Picard was highly intelligent and used hardcore rational arguments to outsmart basically everyone. That right there would be the Pinnacle of Mankinds ability. Sisko was a Great father and a stern leader that knew how to laugh - he was quick and decisive and never fell for anyones sincere forms of trickery. Neither of them had "pride" problems so much, they were just damned good at their job.

Picard: That does not justify what you have done. Back on my world in the the mid 1300's we had a outbreak. We were much like you, unequipped to deal with the disease. In the end, we burned the infected, an estimated 60% of the population were killed by it by the time a vaccine was found. What you have done to Mr Worf is an act of barbarism. Its inhuman. Unethical. Distasteful. However.... the prime directive protects you from the rest of my crew, I will warn you of this. If we ever see so much as a glimmer of your hull on our view screen, I assure you, the last thing you'll see is a torpedoes. Commander Riker! Escort our 'guest' to transporter room 3. I gotta disagree with Janeway here. She should have taken Nelix's lungs back. It's not murder when the only reason the guy has the lungs is because he stole them from the rightful owner. But I can certainly see the moral implications involved. It's a pretty lousy choice either way. One thing I really like about this show is it dealt with a lot "Us or them" situations where one normally moral organization was faced with a disaster so severe they felt the need to prey on others in order to survive.

There was an episode of Enterprise where Capt. Archer had to steal a warp coil from an alien vessel. Without it, he and his crew would not have been able to complete the mission in saving Earth from the Xindi super weapon . Even though he compensated them with other things including food, protein re-sequencer, etc., it's still a morally shaky decision.

Stat trek is always about moral questions. This one isn't the simple "don't take a life to save another", it's stacked with things like the guy will do this more, the lung isn't his and even with the lung he wont live long... Even so the crux of the issue is still the same; Is it moral, in any capacity, to take a living fully functional sentient being and kill him to save the life of another if he doesn't consent? I agree with the writers here, no matter how many laws about ownership you try to use here, you still need to subdue him, put him on the operating table and remove an organ that without, will kill him.

Absolutely PHENOMENAL acting from Kate Mulgrew here. You can tell she is barely holding in her rage that these aliens took Neelix's organs, and she;s giving them a severe warning not to cross her in the future (which they do) but yet, at the same time, she also feels pity for the suffering they have endured and more hopeless rage and and a helpless struggle that she can't fix this problem by forcing the alien to relinquish the organs and put them back in Neelix. So she's left with the impossible choice of having two lives in her hands and having to choose who lives and who dies. If I remember correctly, the aliens DO find a way to save Neelix using Kes's lung, but still.

hey Grant I get what your saying & I do agree but she is so cut off and so far away from SF command & as Tuvok would say, "logical guidance". The morale thing to "try" to do is adhere as best you can to SF principals and regulations: protect your crew but don't sacrifice your crew, to do it. Much like if I was stranded on an deserted island with strangers from a sinking ship, we should try to remain as civil & humane as possible on the island until rescued. Not become like the children in the book "Lord of The Flies". Example: please refer to Captain Ransome of the Equinox. So obsessed with getting home it cost him his command, his ship & eventually his life... If I had the power, how bad would I be if I destroyed the Borg? Am I not like them when they simulate every species they come in contact with? Please refer to Kevin Uxbridge (the Douwd) in The Survivors (episode 3, season 3) from the TNG series. He killed an entire species and had to live an eternity with himself after. the ends never justifies the means.

Well, look what happened to the Borg. The Borg could have been a society very much like ours, but then they had advanced technology which would then turn the society they know inside out until they became... well... a collective. And it all could have stemmed from a simple cybernetic limb/organ.

I personally like Star Trek Voyager, but I do respect the fact that there are Janeway haters and all. I don't like how Janeway handled the Equinox situation either, though what Ransom did was wrong too. It's OK if you don't like Voyager. You can still be my friend. :)

My humble opinion, take it or leave it. This is Kate Mulgrew's finest scene as Janeway. It really encapsulates pretty much everything she's about in one neat little package.

The emotional outrage in her voice, yet controlled. Controlled Anger. People with this ability or under the effect loose nearly all patience and mercy. They are able to use reason and skill, so when up against someone who is under controlled anger, what ever skills they have will be focused, refined and deadly. Run, running is your only chance. Death is nipping at your heals.

they couldn't recover the lungs neelix needed so doing anything really was just for spite, Tuvix also was kinda the same scenario but the difference being 2 people merged into one but both of them were needed by others. Kes was very upset at the loss of Neelix, and Janeway needed Tuvok for guidance and to be her moral compass.

Only problem is this isn't the last time they encounter them and Janeway still loses people to them. I think a moment or two where she makes good on her promise would have been interesting, showing No mercy or quarter but down the road facing a situation where she realizes she's become as ruthless as they are.

This has moral application for us in another analogy that many will find uncomfortable: animal testing and organ harvesting. What gives one the right? Nothing: it does not matter if it is for "human purposes." Neuroscientists have declared central nervous system non-human animal consciousness to be so similar to our own as to be indistinguishable. This raises the question of why certain humans continue treating these animals the way we are. Don't forget: we are mammal primates too. We are all interconnected and the suffering/pain and confinement we cause to others will return to us in a boomerang effect. There are alternatives. For instance, testing on human volunteers, testing on a cellular level, and when it comes to testing the poisonous nature of plants, this can be done on parasites. Let food (and additional healing modalities: good sleep early and at night, continuous access to fresh air from plants, daily sunlight, exercise, avoiding toxins, lots of fresh water, high percentage raw Vegan diet, massage, meditation and positive affirmations, acts of kindness, creative work) be our medicine. Most testing is not even done for medical purposes, but for common household goods: as if we need soap poured into rabbits' held open eyes for 24 hours (draize tests) in order to know not to put it in our own.
