This is why people who ship Katniss/Peeta refer to the pairing as _Toast_ . If you combined the names, you'd end up with either _Katpee_ or _Peeniss_ . Neither option is particularly pleasant, really.

Asura R-R There's an episode of Voyager where 7/9 chases a bad guy (a completely normal unenhanced unarmored human mind you) through the ship and hits him like 4 times with the stun setting and he barely even reacts. He gets more tired just from running away than he does from a phaser.

John Beaird Having marathoned the entire series I consider myself somewhat of an expert on this one.. *ahem* Every single fucking alien they run into without exception (yes that includes the mole with a mohawk in the first episode) Is a xenophobic dumbass who wouldn't be able to understand what the word "help" meant if it bit them in the arse and gave them syphilis, which, incidentally everyone they run into thinks that's precisely what they plan on doing The only civilization even bordering on being worthy of the word is three seconds away from an anarchist revolution against their 'benign' but utterly authoritarian overlords who are all psychic and attempt to "rehabilitate" everyone who even thinks of teaching that arsehole the next market stall over a thing or two. Add to that, the fact that these civilizations never overtly explain their rules, especially the "instant-death penalty" ones that the Voyager Crew always seem to violate without exception except one can assume on every other planetoid since not one of them specifies the penalties before charming-young-blonde and his feisty assistant beam down to the surface and break it out of ignorance or sheer human nature. Everyone in the delta quadrant, in short, choose the most assholeishly chav-looking "we don't like yer kind around 'ere stranger!" fascist from Call of Cthulhu they could find who without fail chose to be the most selfish and unhelpful arsehole they could be to everyone the met. Sure, you could blame that on the setting, as they were going for "the delta quadrant is the most dangerous in the galaxy" and lets face it, flying through the Galaxy Garden just wouldn't have been as interesting if we didn't find out the local fauna and fawna were secretly shapeshifting overlords from {Proxima Vantchuri 92 and oh whoops looking at the wrong way means you have now have to die by increasingly bizarre mandatory rituals or flashbacks There is also the fact that the two-parters episodes and the ones written by anyone other than the original writers were the only ones that deviated from the standard norm and managed to wrap up a plotline without everyone involved being killed off or sealed away in the history vault so they could never be re-used. In short; Everyone they meet (or at least their representative) has the diplomatic grace of a klingon teenager with a stomach ache They violate the local instant death penalty on every fucking planet that has it yet fails to even hint at it before it's broken The only formula-deviating episodes are two-parters, specials, and written by someone else And.. Well. I still thought it was good enough to see to the end. So there's that. I just wouldn't recommend anyone else to marathon it since the little nigglies start piling up into a xenophobic fascist intent on mistrusting you.

I got a pretty good run out of STO, actually. Since I'm at best a casual Star Trek fan I wasn't disappointed with the story-telling or setting as a fanboy, just as a player. The space combat was pretty fun, too. The abilities, weapon loadouts, and manueverability just made them feel complex and open (which I like). I dreaded going dirtside, though, and the PvP felt rediculously unbalanced even for an MMORPG. But it kept me happily blazing around the galaxy until TOR came out.

I'd ask why people even try to make Star Trek games anymore, given how complex and nuanced it would have to be to work and be a faithful product, but I guess the answer to that question would be "cynical cash grabbing". Seriously, a good Star Trek game would require worthwhile space and ground combat, scientific and engineering challenges, as well as social/diplomacy elements, and a well-written plotline with interesting philosophical undertones. Most games can't do more than one thing well.

Star Trek, in its prime decades ago, was also amazingly tolerant/accepting (especially for the era). The writers stressed the respect off all beings, regardless of religion, race (and species :P), gender, orientation and interests. It bravely challenged the deeply held societal pressures of the day, in that anyone can do whatever they want if they wish without prejudice, showing that discrimination and hate was something holding us back from the beauty of the universe; something we must discard.

The real Star Trek was the Next Generation. It was pretty nice really. Also funny when they did a time-jump-forward episode to about sixteen years and Picard looks older. And now if you look at Patrick Steward twenty-three years later he looks EXACTLY THE SAME. Gotta hand it to the character for being sprightly and capable like a new non-redshirt Ensign, but the actor for managing to never change age.

...if Star Trek is traditionally about vaporizing endless mooks, in 1. bland and poorly balanced ship combat where anyone not flying a ship piled with Dual Cannons is either willfully obtuse or desperately believes they are a Special And Unique Snowflake, or 2. clumsy ground combat that seems alternately intent on giving you severe arthritis and stretching your fingers so you can easily reach a 13th interval on the piano, with 3. the occasional half-hearted attempt to pay lip-service to themes like Exploring Strange New Worlds and The Federation Always Seeks Peaceful Resolutions First, then yes. (Granted, the thematic issues evaporate on the Klingon side, and the main Federation diplomat is an annoying prat that just points you to an endless stream of beggars, so it is a bit of a relief to switch sides and just commit to the way of Endless Glorious Murder. But then you're left with klutzy gameplay, buggy missions, vocals that generally sound like whoever was in the break room and couldn't run faster than the voice director, enemy AI that would embarrass a goldfish, and same-y missions that discourage dramatically varying tactics and builds, but it's just as well because switching your weapons, consoles, major ship components, Bridge Officer assignments and active Duty Officer roster around is laborious and slow as possible.)
