My arrangement of Nicholas Britell's "Your Mother is Dead" from Star Wars: Andor.
Britell said he used a cello octet for this piece, but this clearly needed a double bass for the low parts.

Until a year ago, I had an addiction to marijuana that cost me two years of my life. It was a severe addiction. When I started watching this series, it touched my heart so deeply that I even remembered my mother's words, begging me to please quit marijuana while crying. Since then, I've been clean. Please value your parents because the day they're gone, you'll truly be trying to fill the void. Now, I am disciplined and doing financially well, but I would give everything I've earned to see my mom and dad again.

Was there ever in SW such an intimate, emotional and mature moment? I cannot think of one. It is more like a piece out of some drama series not adventure space opera. Keep up the great work 👏

Thank you. I’ll do my best. I have a few more of these I want to get to before Mando Season 3. I can’t think of a more intimate moment. Williams can never really stay this tender for this long, But this also is only possible because of the directing of this scene. Such a long intimate close up of Cassian basically begs for intimate quiet music. Britell did a great job of adapting to the situation.

Andor is a great show, written so well and directed with competence, and the music is amazing, we need more dedicated people like andors creative team with other Star Wars shows

When “directed with competency” needed to be said at all… It’s become so clear because of this show that Star Wars can do better.

Only those who have lost a loved one can understand the beauty and depth of this scene, where even the immensity of the ocean cannot contain your grief.

I appreciated how much he was trying to keep it together while clearly agonized. It’s the subtly that truly grabs us in this show.

Thanks! Me too. It was so raw for the Star Wars universe which made it so impactful. Definitely an under appreciated piece.

@@starwarsmusicanalysis I always wondered why most Star Wars projects didnt utilize music like this. I think they try to mimic the sound of John Williams a little too much and although it makes sense I think this proves that there is more to offer to this universe. I cant think of a more impressive OST for Disney Star Wars that Ive listened to this much. Nicholas Britell has hopefully opened the floodgates for this.

It’s a hard thing to tell a cohesive story without paying tribure to such iconic music. Fortunately, Andor was designed to be less connected to the movies and so there was more freedom to branch out artistically.

This scene makes his death in Rogue One all the more poignant. I immediately noticed how similar the sunset here looks like the Death Star explosion on Scarif. I imagine Andor would have noticed the similarity as well, remembering the day he found out his mother died. He comforted Jyn in the wake of her own parent's death, recalling how it felt.

Agreed. Britell has a sensitivity to music and story telling that has been missing in many of the other tv shows.

Such a beautiful show. They should’ve put this out as soon after rogue one as they could have it would have gotten so much more attention

If they had, it would have been rushed and terrible. Gilroy took the correct needed amount of time to plan something out, give it time to breathe, shoot, and reshoot as needed. This is so rare in today’s cinema and I’m so appreciative that they didn’t rush anything about this show.

Amazing work! Sounds just like the original. This might be my favourite piece of Star Wars music ever, but its title is so annoying! Not only is it kind of spoilery, but it's so grim and not fun to say at all! I wish Britell had named it something like Niamos Sunrise (Sunset?) or "Cass I'm Sorry". Idk, a nitpick. What an incredible composition and terrific arrangement.

Yeah. It’s a little weird to make that thumbnail too. Haha. But such a powerfully tender piece at just the right moment.
