1997's off-duty Marines and extra dewbacks, Scene 38's Vader vs. Obi-wan (though I'd probably tweak the sound mix a little), Adywan's Falcon pursuit, and bring back Lak Sivrak from the original cut. That seems like a good balance of elements.

@@jessea5044 Yeah, money is great, but but he already put out the dead or alive bounty. He was ready to have Han killed. I guess to me it just feels lazy, especially since Jabba killed that dancer just because she wouldn't come to him.

1:08 Agreed, I don't really hate the Special Edition even though there are some changes I don't really like. I can understand all the problems they had filming the first movie and the original cut didn't quite meet Lucas' true vision. So I appreciate he was able to go back 20 years later and present all three movies the way he'd intended them to be using digital technology. But I too wish they would also release the theatrical versions on official Blu-ray (as opposed to Harmy's Despecialized Editions) as well as the Special Editions so we'd have the pleasure of enjoying both versions in HD. Cuz there are actually more SE changes I like than those I don't like. Some of which I consider actual improvements to the theatrical versions. But anyway, I have my copies of the theatrical versions and I'm happy to stick with those if they're not likely to get an official Blu-ray release anytime soon.

@@abdmin3268 I feel most of these changes are completely warranted. A lot of these practical models seem to have limitations which this person was overlooking, such as a poor depiction of an object moving at high velocity, or a dog fight being more engaging to the audience. And when I see most of the shots, the practical models stick out as being “fake” or “inauthentic” more than any digital replacements (for the most part). People need to stop viewing the 1977 release like it’s a gold standard for effects in filmmaking. It’s the prime of its era, but that doesn’t make it perfect.

Thank you, the originals really changed movie history, and they were the grossest money making movies of all time, the first one even made more money than Avengers End Game, they made a comparison nowadays. People would go and see it several times, there was some star wars spirit back then, even in the 90's with the special editions, I only saw the first in the cinema and I didn't went to see the other 2 because I immediately noticed the crap that had been done... still, the spirit back then was way better than now, I still had fun seeing the original movie completely changed and destroyed, still it was better than any prequel or sequel movie done until today. Thank you for your comparison, the originals have to be the stonebase for all other movies and not the prequels, or the special editions, or any other source.

I too would like to see the theatrical edition officially released. But if I don't, no matter. I don't dislike the Special Editions, I think most of what he added was an improvement. I have some grievances (Too strong a word?), but I could count them on one hand. I would change.... - Take away the rocks covering R2 and add back Ben's original Force yell (The 2011 one just sounds dumb). - Revert the Greedo scene to how it originally was (Han's a smuggler and a gunslinger, this shouldn't be a big deal). - Remove or improve the Jabba scene (Remove the scene entirely. Or alternatively, remove Boba Fett (He wasn't in there when it was filmed) and create a new, improved Jabba model)

- Completely agreed - Han shoots Greedo scene is perfect in the 1977 version. Bring that version back and never change it again. (In fact the meme "Han shot first" - while USEFUL - isn't really accurate. It's actually that Han shoots and Greedo never got a shot off AT ALL.) - Ditch the Jabba scene entirely - what Han and Jabba are talking about (dumping cargo in the face of Imperial Interdiction) is EXACTLY what Han and Greedo were talking about! It's duplication of effort and a complete waste of time! We know all we NEED to know about Jabba from the fact that he was willing to sic Bounty Hunters on him and Greedo spelled out his other motivations clearly. Jabba is only necessary once you have the rescue of Han in ROTJ. - Yeah - ditch the rocks in front of R2. It almost makes it look like he's STUCK back there and CAN'T maneuver to get out of that hole! But I'm okay with either version of Ben's yell. Addtionally - - I am generally okay with the CGI ships in the middle and last part of the film. I find no issues there and in fact really enjoy the re-workings. - Anything that "fixes" the scale of Mos Eisley is fine with me. The pan up and extended shot of the speeder moving down the street that shows the larger city beyond? Just fine. But don't make the cuts SO extended that you need to add in droid smacking and speeder bike and creature almost colliding slapstick to fill the space! - Creature replacement is hit or miss. Keep the stuff in the Cantina original. But the CGI Dewbacks are okay to keep. -Speaking of the Cantina - there's a minor fix that they KEEP MISSING that I've been WANTING them to do and they NEVER FIX. It's the shot of the little alien reaching up for the big drink from the bartender - and briefly you can see right through ONE of his eyes on the mask and OUT THE OTHER!!! All this other stuff Lucasfilm fixed/altered and they can't spot THAT MISTAKE? C'MON! At least black matte that one eye long enough to cover up that slight botch! - Big creature walking in FRONT of the principal characters and Storm Troops at the beginning of the "These are not the Droids you are looking for" sequence - LOSE IT. That was unnecessary. - New Ben Kenobi exterior residence matte. Not sure - it looks good, but I'd want to look at the interior shots and see if they "feel" like they belong in the original building or if it makes more sense to have the slightly larger exterior. - Generally I'm ok with the various sky replacements and contrast and color fixes in the desert and Jawa Crawler sequences. Looks less washed out. - For God's sake - LOSE THE *KLONK* sound effect of that Stormtrooper hitting his head on the sliding door in the Death Star! We get it - you thought it was funny too. But it wasn't in the original and it was just a fun Easter egg for the sharp-eyed. You didn't need to CALL ATTENTION to it. - Changing English to Aurabesh on the tractor beam controls. Good call. Consistent with the lore. I think that covers all my thoughts.

If there were to be any changes made, IMO they should have only altered visible ERRORS in the theatrical cut (ex: Vader's lightsaber not being red during one shot on the Death Star sequence). Even then, the alteration should have been made to respect and blend in with the original special effects as much as possible. Not all changes are bad, IF they can respect and blend in with the original effects of the movie. Heck, I don't even mind if they even leave 1981's "Episode IV: A New Hope" opening crawl for the sake of consistency with the other movies. But other than that, all the CGI and scene alteration diminishes the historical significance of the film. I'm preaching to the choir here, but 2020 could end up being an awesome year for SW if fans can pressure Disney enough to edit together the "despecialized" versions of the movie.

I do wholeheartedly understand why Lucas would make these changes. After all, he had this whole idea for a universe in his head, but both budgetary reasons and the limited technology of the 70's forced him to make some compromises. However, I think you remove a lot of historic and educational value when the original versions are not made easily accessable to the public. I mean, we've got better planes than the Wright Brothers made, but we still value their place and importance in history. Just because the original versions weren't true to George Lucas' ambitions, doesn't mean that they should be forgotten to time. I also think that the reasons behind the alterations were, that at this point in time, Star Wars had become a gigantic succes, and people were taking it more seriously, so of course the effects had to be "better" to give the implication that Star Wars was always serious art. In my opinion, that's what's wrong with the modern Star Wars fanbase - everything has to be analyzed so seriously. I mean, come on, seeing from these clips, it wasn't really more than a B-movie that people actually went to see. There's not much difference between 1977's Star Wars and Flash Gordon.

I think that it would have been more effective if Lucasfilm removed "slug" Jabba and replaced him with a short, fat Scottish mobster.

@@Phantron - I was only joking. My joke was in reference to how the original deleted scene from "A New Hope" had a chubby Scottish man playing the role of Jabba the Hutt. The man wasn't an alien. The original scene -- without special effects -- works well. However, Lucas reimagined Jabba as a slug for Return of the Jedi. You can find that scene on KZfaq.

Hopefully, in 2027 Lucas might release the original version of Star Wars, without episode 4 in the titles, in the theaters. That way all these people who've never seen it can sit in the theater and experience Star Wars👍

It breaks my heart seeing what was done to the original film. I think it looked better originally & most of the additions are unnecessary and ugly.

I'd keep the original for historical reasons, but I'd certainly have an upgraded version. Firstly, I like the Disney version of the Stormtrooper search scene, where they've gotten rid of all the CGI Stormtroopers, the shuttle and the monster Dewback in the centre. All they've put in are the CGI Dewbacks in the background. I'd also have the CGI Dewback near the cantina entrance. Lastly, I'd replace the original X-Wings as they approach the Death Star on what looks like rails. That always bothered me. Other than that all I'd do is colour correction.

I also don't like the Jabba scene. Not only does the CGI look atrocious, but it ruins the whole reveal of Jabba in episode 6. I would gladly get the original just to get that scene removed alone

I really don’t mind the added scene with Biggs. The added takeoff and landing scenes also felt about right. Other than that I think most of these changes are pretty bad or unnecessary and actually harm what was charming about the original releases and how impressive of a movie it was given what was technologically possible at the time.

What bothers me the most with these edits is that the majority of them are either completely unnecessary to the point of being distracting (creatures and droids) or they actually undo the hard work and screen appearances of the cast and crew. Removing the matte paintings, covering up characters, discarding and remaking the effects sequences that won the creators awards and changed cinema, and the like are nothing but insults to the people who made those elements, and it shows exactly how little respect Lucas had for those who built his empire. Lucas is a monster and a hypocrite, considering he appeared before Congress to condemn exactly these kinds of edits.

The only thing with the original 1977 theatrical release that Lucas should have enhanced/fixed was the lightsaber duel between Obi-wan and Vader. Two old geezers poking at each other with glow sticks. Needed a few more scenes of good fighting.

Not gonna lie, some shots ARE better in the re-shoots...in fact, I would argue the majority were better than the original (minus that god awful howl). Come on, that Sandcrawler scene was shit compared to the edited, or like the Sandtrooper scene. Some fans are just jaded af and aren't open to new ideas or new concepts-explains why some fans are just cringe.

I largely agree. I want a good quality copy of the ordinal. It absolutely should be preserved. But I do like some of the new transitions, ship shots an such (and of course Greedo), and would love some sort of branching version where I can choose my ideal version. Same for Jedi.
