The front window on the carrack is exceptionally large, big enough to span multiple decks, or for a giant-sized bridge, or for tall wookies sitting on dewbacks.

*Alternate reality time.* If the Wookies were pragmatic and had gotten their act together, they should have used the Carrack two seater versions as the anchor point of their PDF fleet. With their long lifespans and technical know how, they could have had very highly skilled individuals crew them and get the most out of the ship. While no doubt expensive, they would be worth it to the low population Wookies. As for affording them, Wookies should have set up their own freight companies and exploited their secret hyperspace routes. Plus Wookie crew wouldn't just be cross skilled in everything needed for a freight line, they could also double as organic forklifts when loading and unloading. Wookie transport incorporated could make large profits that could then be used to update their military. And some Wookies could get voders cybernetically implanted, wear tactical Kilts, and join big corporations and work their way up the ladder by seniority with their 400 year lifespans. And being a 7 foot tall furry killing machine with claws that still gives off the aura of a big friendly dog is really useful in office politics - You may like being around a Great Pyrenees and even want to pat it, but you're not going to annoy it and definitely back off if it growls. In a century a Wookie could get a senior position. And use their power to help the Homeworld. "What about the droid attack on the Wookies?" "The Wookies blew the CIS invasion fleet out of orbit..."

I’ve always thought the Carrack looked like it should’ve been switched with the Lancer. The Carrack is supposedly way bigger yet it has a massive front window that makes no sense with the scale.

We see the bridge in one of the Tales comics, and the window DOES dominate the layout, consisting of an upper balcony and lower computer consoles.

I think the Carrack's massive window is meant to bait enemy forces, making them think the Carrack is smaller than it is. It's very likely that only a small fraction of that window is actually the bridge, and the rest of it might be there just to throw off attackers. There might also be a second layer underneath the large window that protects the bridge in case the outermost layer is shattered. In any case, given the nature of the Carrack's design, shooting the bridge out would most likely be really tough. The window may seem vulnerable, but chances are that it's half-a-meter thick and shielded better than Palpatine's shuttle. Not to mention that there's probably a secondary command center in case the bridge does get busted.

While (somewhat obsessively) playing the old PC game Star Wars: Rebellion in the late '90s, the Carrack class ships kept the Galactic Empire going while I conquered enough planets to actually build Star Destroyers. Always loved them for that reason, haha.

@@johnbuczkowski5628 Not really, the Carrack is just 100 meters longer, but has almost double to Turbo-Lasers (and all of them are heavies, not a mix of light and heavy ones!) and it has 5 tractor-beams instead of one or two (it only says "tractor beam emitters" on the Star Wars wiki)), it also seems that the Carrack is more durable and that its hyperdrive (1.0 compared to 2.0 rating) is also faster :)

You missed one appearance... Truce at Bakura, where an Imperial defense force headed up by a Carrack teamed up with a Rebel force days after Endor to drive back the Ssi-Ruuk

Thrawn was a soldier. (yes officer but I'm referring to his mindset) He paid attention to the strengths and weaknesses of what ever he acquired or interest him. Its very likely he would have used the ship effectively. Hell in Legends he picked up old dreadnoughts and they were effective in his fleet where anywhere else they would have nearly been laughed at due to the vintage. .

Dude If thrawn had been in charge at Endor the rebels would've lost and the galactic empire would still reign. Literally one of the biggest things that led to the empires downfall was palpatine and Vader being too conceited to listen to Thrawn on matters of strategy and tactics

Its a good heavy support cruiser. Although its AF (anti-fighter) variant is not needed. The tartan-patrol cruiser fits the AF roll a lot better. A single Carrack and 2 Tartans would be more then enough Firepower to handle most outer rim problems.

The Lancer class frigate was the Empire's version of a anti-fighter Carrak, they just made a hash of it by not giving it the engine performance of the Carrak and then tried to use them with their anti-fighter guns as a general purpose frigate. They didn't have the firepower to deal with a properly balanced starship design equipped with larger capital ship grade guns and thus lost a lot of them. That combined with there relatively high price tag lead to a rather lackluster early life. Thrawn on the otherhand showed everyone just how effective they could be. He seemed to be able to get the most out of overlooked & outdated designs.

You forgot the moment where Captain Needa (Only Commander Needa at the time) on board a Carrack backed up by three more and a single old Dreadnaught held Invisible Hand in place long enough for the Venators to surround the ship and pummel it. So without the Carracks we wouldn't be able to make Half a Ship jokes.

Only way I knew about this ship is when I read that a dornean gunship trying to rescue survivors of one of the destroyed mon cal cruisers from the battle of endor was seriously damaged by the light cruiser mid rescue attempt, but another dornean gunship sister ship came to help and attacked the light cruiser from the behind and the both gunships overwhelmed it.

In the case of the star fighter Carrack class I can see a need for the ship to have heavy turbo lasers as not all fighters and or bombers had hyper drives and would there for need some kind of home base or mother ship. Which the heavy turbo lasers would be effective in disabling thus preventing repair/resupply (fuel, ammo)/retreat

FINALY AUTOMATION!!!!!! just targeting and weapons automation alone would eliminate the need for gunners . Pitty the rebels couldn’t get there hands on these. Perfect rebel ship! Simple design Narrow profile Well armed Fast Perfect ship for battle, it’s not pretty or attractive but it’s effective I’ve never understood why ships didn’t have grafted shields around VERY close to the hull like 5 cm meaning fighters couldn’t get through you’re shields 🛡 You could also scale this down to half the size to be a close attack range frigate

Dreadnaught has not been around since the old republic. It's an "old" design that came around a few hundred years (2 or 3) before the Clone Wars. It was based off a Mandalorian design from the Mandalorian Wars during Old Republic times

What I love about the Carrack is how simplistic it is designed, yet being elegant in some way. But still I would prefer a perfectly spherical front with a large bridge viewport like the 2001 Space Odyssey Discovery One.

What would be really interesting is if the *automation* was applied to some other ships with _large crew requirements,_ how far could they reduce them? And what was the _cost_ of such automation? It couldn't be prohibitively expensive because the Empire wouldn't waste the money on a ship that it didn't value much anyway. The potential *game changer* though is how did the automation work, was it just a bunch of droids sitting at controls, or were computers handing the inputs themselves? If it was computer autopiloting that opens up a massive possibility in space saving by removing the need for corridors, living space, seats and control interfaces ect, all that would be needed is small access ways for astromechs to conduct service and repairs. The vast majority of a ships internal space is devoted to the crew (70% perhaps?), if that could be reassigned to components and machinery, the ships capabilities would dramatically increase. Imagine if it only had crew access and living area in the current bridge (and maybe a long corridor to the cargo bay and Dewback cages), the rest was just the guts of the ship and the small mechs that service it. You could stick in another reactor and give it the loadout of both the capital ship killer and the anti fighter variant you came up with (lots of laser and flak cannons). And then throw in a bunch of missile launchers for laughs. Or just shrink the size of the ship to approximately a third of its current length, while keeping the same basic stats, except speed and performance would drastically increase. The worse thing to do is just leave all that free space just unused, it's not only a waste, imagine how easy this ship would be to board and commandeer. And how difficult it would be for the one remaining crewmember to hunt down the _xenomorph_ that burst out of the pilot's stomach.

Yeah, something I never really got in Star Wars. Yes, they seem to have some limites when it comes to computer systems, but even with those taken into acount you could severely limited crew compliments. Look at bigger capital ship weapons, they need a whole crew of their own. The computer could at least handle details like power couplings, capacitor balancing and such, leaving just the actual gunner and maybe a service tech just in case. And it gets worse: How often do you really need to aim at more than one, maybe two targets with a turbolaser broadside? That means 2-4 gunners could handle ALL the turrets, instead of 4-10?15? per turret. That alone would reduce crews quite a bit. Even more so once you ask yourself: How much of the crew is just there to support the rest of the crew? Stewards, Cooks, maintenance for those gunners quarters.... so there is a secondary crew saving as well.

I think the power usage for this thing would be off the chart, so while it could keep up with fighters it probably would be using all its power to do so. With full power to weapons it probably could not travel anywhere near as fast. Ideally it could accelerate into position, optimise power to weapons and shields, then reposition itself by diverting power back to its engines. Thats my thoughts anyway.

Perhaps it is the vaguely phallic shape of the ship. A knobbed head and a smooth body down to the engine compartments where the ship widens out slightly. Yes, it is vaguely like flying a giant space m-aid for girls. In a universe where every other ship is shaped like a dorito, a glorified rocket ship, a cheerio, and or a potato.

Damn if the empire just retrofits those Carracks light cruisers and build whole packs as support ships for the ISDs, then the rebel alliance got some serious issus to fight and counter those babys. I think a battlegroup of say 3 Victory 2 SD , 1 Interdictor, and 10-14 Carracks would be enough to crush any resistance on backwater planets or planets in the outer rim. And those bg´s would be a good patrol fleet in rebel infestes regions or better in contested galactic regions.

...if not, perhaps painting it black and having a high-end sensor screen package installed? And having the automated variant, that way you can operate with 2 people; but the option to maintain a decent sized crew of 6-12 for security and boarding operations

It is! A much smaller, cloaked ship was used in a Clone Wars episode, and it could only hold 8 people! It is definitely big enough, it's just a matter of if you have the credits to illegally purchase one underneath the nose of the Empire.

It's big enough for even bulky cloaking devices, in fact, cloaked Carracks played a major role in the Thrawn Campaign! Though those were double-blind cloaks and needed a force-user to feed the crew targeting/timing information. There was at least one pirate group that captured a Carrack after the Battle of Nar Shadaa in the Han Solo trilogy.

I imagine that the anti-ship and fighter screening variants would be employed alongside each other for mutual support. A squadron of 6 (3 of both types) would give a total firepower of 60 turbo lasers, 120 ion cannons, and 120 laser cannons, 30 tractor beam projectors, and 30 TIE/ln (each cruiser having five mounted on external racks). Massive firepower with greater tactical flexibility then a single ISD, at least when it came to deep space or orbital combat.

The bridge is only a tiny part of that transparisteel, and may not even be in the same spot on every carrack. So much of it is decoy

I can only see the AF variant being a good counter to multiple advanced fighters/bombers/interceptors like the TIE Defender or B-Wing.

if I were to redesign this ship I would fuse the anti-capital ship and anti-starfighter to have it have 10 heavy turbo laser's, swap out the 20 laser cannon's for 20 point defense lasers, 20 Ion turret's, and 5 tractor beam's even if we need the ship to be made differently, like making it shaped like the Arquitens-class light cruiser( I like its design) and I would have them in group's as well, making it a nearly unstoppable fleet if with Venator's and Victory 1 and 2's

With all of this new information it's kind of a shame to see the Carrack relegated to being a 'light' vessel in most Star Wars RTS mods. I know that Interregnum for Sins of a Solar Empire is really bad about it, leaving the Carrack as little more than a mass damage sponge while heavier ships like the ISD-II do most of the damage.

I always thought that whoever initially came up with the art for this ship had no concept for the sizes of SW ships, or somebody made a mistake in picking the wrong model for a ship. It has a freakin cockpit on it but it's 350m. Even if it's considered an observation deck it's still way too big, especially for a war ship.

I think you must be thinking of the Taratan (You see it in formation with the Carrack here a few times) or the Lancer, the Imperial Civil War mod uses the Ion Carrack, not the antifighter carrack.

The Empire really underutilized some fantastic ships in favor of their preferred brute force and swarm tactics style. Case in point, the Carrack. Fantastic ship. I can make a balanced and effective Imperial fleet right now. Take the Imperial-II Star Destroyer, get rid of its fighter complement, and give it a decent amount of point defenses. You'd also need a better fighter than the shitty TIE line, but let's just say you don't want to do that. Put just a little bit more into your starfighters, to get so much more out of them. Replace the standard TIE fighter with the TIE Interceptor, and give your skilled veterans TIE Defenders, or at least TIE Hunters if Defenders are unavailable. Also, give the TIE Interceptors at least light shield generators. Then, take two Imperial-II class Star Destroyers, and for each group of two, pair them with four Carrack-class light cruisers, four Lancer-class frigates, an Immobilizer 418 if you absolutely need interdiction capabilities, and at least one modernized (i.e. upgraded with modern technology) Venator-class Star Destroyer to act as a dedicated carrier and an additional escort ship. That's a well-rounded fleet composition right there. You're welcome, Empire. EDIT: Just realized, I forgot the Vigil-class picket ship, which is also a fantastic ship. Throw half a dozen or more of those into my proposed fleet composition if you feel like it. You won't regret it. Also, come to think of it, you can also add some small freighter type ships in there, to complement your starfighters. Give them quad laser cannon turrets and concussion missile or proton torpedo launchers, and you have an effective heavy weapons support ship for your dedicated fighters and bombers. The VT-49 Decimator would do nicely.

Pter Thanas used it brilliantly in the Bakuran defense against the Ssiruuk. The Dominant held out against much larger ships and vastly more fighters, and outlasted the Flurry.

Imagine a small ship bristling with anti-aircraft guns. Now, imagine that ship is actually matching the speed of your X-Wing squadron. And you just noticed the Interdictor-class Star Destroyer behind it surrounded by several more of those smaller fast ships with AA guns.

Another source for info on this ship is the late 90s game Star Wars Rebellion. You flew the anti-fighter version in that game.

I would like to think that of two of these shis being partnered up with one dreadnought class heavy cruiser to make a power house small fleet. As the price is unknown, if I base the price for this ship along lines of something like that of 3/4 of the dreadnought maybe even less, then the fleet that I have mentioned above would come to a cost of 18,000,000 which is 30,000,000 more than one I.S.D and it would have less crew needs than a I.S.D in my mind this is a better use of cash

Point defense laser cannons is good but you also need 360 turbo cannons and rocket tubes is good to also have ions cannons to and a hanger to use star fighters and cargo hold to use in missions

the Carrack was pretty much the M925 truck of star wars. the empire wanted to just phase them out but honestly couldn't due to their huge numbers and reliability.

YES! The Carrack! Among my favourite ships in Star Wars! Versatile and well armed? You bet :) - I'd want a mixed loadout :) (and some hangars for "fighters" (large enought ot fit ships like a YT-1300...I don't like starfighters, but some missile-boats or something like that? Yeah, gimme!)

For the AA variant the turbo lasers were not for starfighters but to defend it from capital ships. Lancer is an easy kill for capitals

Err, I seriously doubt this was considered a 'Capital Ship'. It's about the size of a frigate. I know ship classes are all kind of screwed up in SW but this thing was an escort, not the battleships like the Star Destroyers and Mon Cal cruisers.
