@@AddSerious I was 10 when it came out and I saw it with my mom who thought it would be too violent for me to see alone. When I was talking with my friends about it the next day one of them had already seen it 7 times. It hadn't occurred to me that I could see it more than once. So I started to go see it several more times all for only a $1 each time. Ahh, the good old days when a kid could spend a hot summer day in the movie theatre for only a little bit of money.

When I saw this in 1977 at the impressionable age of 14, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. After it ended people walked out of the theater and got back into line to see it again. I’ve never seen that happen in any theater since then. It was a game changer in 77 and continues to influence movies today.

You can't imagine how big a hit and cultural impact this movie had. That opening scene with the giant Imperial ship flying overhead, shaking the seats and filling the screen one knew this was going to be a good flick! Now imagine how it hit us later, back in 1980 when "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back" came out. Up until Empire it wasn't known that "Star Wars" you watched here was an "Episode IV". It was just plain ole "Star Wars". It was redone with "Episode IV A New Hope" added. But it also meant that there could be prequels made someday! Actually the original 1977 "Star Wars" and the two sequels were very different then. They were updated, especially Episode VI, several times with some CGI and scenes not in the original to keep up with the sequels, and the prequels later. You're going to really like The Empire Strikes Back! To most of us fans of the original trilogy, we favor Empire Strikes Back, but not to take away from the two others. It's a great trilogy you'll enjoy, and just wait til you see the prequels later where it all comes full circle. It wasn't the first science fiction movie. Scifi goes back to the silent movie era. In fact, the very first drama or story set to film was a scifi called "Le Voyage dans la Lune" made in 1902, available on KZfaq and one you will likely recognize pieces from it. For a more recent classic scifi, the one that really set a standard of the way scifi movies would be made ever after do Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), made about 9 years before Star Wars. If you do 2001, please commit to its sequel "2010: The Year We Make Contact" (1984) done a long 16 years later and WELL worth it! 2001 perplexed many, dazzled all of us, but you will feel it should have a sequel as it did myself and others back then. If you want to do an older science fiction classic do "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) which had quite an impact on post-WWII people then. It's a B&W that began, along with a couple others, the array of 1950s wonderful science fiction classics big and small. It was really fun to see you guys enjoy Star Wars. 🖖😎

@mrkelso 2 жыл бұрын
Perfectly said. I agree: though there are other good sci-fi movies, "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is the single best early sci-fi. Watch that to see "what was", then "2001" for the leap forward. And yes, you're right, "2010", though different, does tend to help people resolve their feelings about "Odyssey". And the next jump is here at "Star Wars". Personally, I would also encourage "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", because it came out (about) simultaneously with "Star Wars", and created a different development path for sci-fi, a more personal, human vibe that was extremely influential.

Yeah, the changes of the special editions really irk me as well. Too bad one has to go _"Arr!"_ to see these movies in the way they were originally made/intended. (but at least one can do so in HD now thanks to some industrious souls creating the "Despecialized Edition")

@@silkwesir1444 I hear ya! I always advise reactors to do original theatrical releases (OTR) before watching any director's cuts, extended versions, etc of great movies like Close Encounters. That last added scene in Close Encounters Special Edition was neat to see (I'm sure you know the one), but the way they re-edited the rest of the movie kinda ruined it for me. The OTR is the best to watch for the first time!

Science Fiction became popular in the 1950's with "The Day The Earth Stood Still," "War of the Worlds," "Forbidden Planet," "The Thing from another World," "The Fly" and the original "Godzilla." Science Fiction became more profitable in the 1960's with "The Planet of the Apes," and "2001 A Space Odyssey." But it became blockbuster material in the 1970's with "Star Wars," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Alien."

Star Wars is more space fantasy than sci-fi. It was notable because of the leaps in special effects that this film innovated. It completely changed what could be done in a film. During the making, he founded Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), a special and visual effects company, to not only handle his needs but the needs of other filmmakers. ILM has since been at the forefront of much high-quality special effects work ever since, with their work in about 80% of the big budged spectacle films of the past 40 years. George Lucas also retained merchandising rights from the studio. He made a great deal of money selling toys, the we bought whenever we could. This film expanded the big budget film landscape, making studios pay for more special effects films to try and make as much money as Star Wars.

This movie was not the first Sci Fi movie, arguably a silent movie called journey to the moon created in 1902. However, this was the first big blockbuster sci Fi movie and thus introduced the Sci Fi genera to millions of people who had never seen one before. Cowboy Westerns, gangster dramas, and cop movies dominated the theaters back then. This movie basically changed the trajectory of film forever by showing movie companies that they could make big money making movies that were considered “kid” movies.

Darth Vader was played by a tall man who could bear the weight of the costume. The voice was James Earl Jones; a famous actor in his own right outside of voice over. He was also the voice of Mufasa in the cartoon movie "The Lion King". Also, you're watching an edited version from the 90s. Director/Producer just started using CGI in his films such as Jurassic Park. He wanted to update the original trilogy with CGI including adding Jabba the Hut. The original scene (with a normal human) was cut but Lucas added it back in with a CGI Jabba.

The most memorable moment in any movie theater I've ever been in was when the Millennium Falcon made its first jump to hyperspace. The whole theater burst onto wild cheers- we had never seen anything like that effect. It seems cheesy by today's standards but it was amazing in 1977! Lucas had a very limited budget for this - scify blockbusters were unheard of. They had to be very inventive to pull off the special effects and had little money for making prints or for advertising. It caught on by weird of mouth. I lived in suburban NY and in our whole county of 2.5 million people there was only one theater (with one screen) showing this. You had to wait on line for 6 hrs to get it. The first 3 times I went there we were told there was no way we'd get in, even to the last show. So when we did see the anticipation was at insane levels.
@majkus
@majkus 2 жыл бұрын
A film critic once broke down the scene. The reason the hyperjump was so effective - and this is partly due to editor Marcia Lucas - was the way the scene leading up to it builds to the climax. We are told multiple times that we need to make the jump to hyperspace, but we can't do it yet. The danger builds, but not yet... and _finally_ at the last possible moment, you hear the engines spinning up and the jump that you have been anticipating all this time finally happens. Lucas admitted at the time that the actual effect of streaking the stars and zooming the Falcon leaving a rotating star-field was dead simple; but the reaction isn't to the effect itself (even though the audience thinks it is!) - it is the culmination of the perfectly edited scene that precedes it. It is once of those scenes, like some in Citizen Kane, that rewards study.

The thing about the stormtrooper believing C-3P0 is pretty basic: Droids are considered a slave class in the Empire and elsewhere, and really aren't credited with much importance. If you see a droid you don't recognize, it doesn't automatically mean it's suspicious, it just means that droids aren't really worth noticing or committing to memory.

"A Trip to the Moon" (1902) is the earliest "feature length"(12 min) SciFi movie. Star Wars is mainly inspired by 1930's Flash Gordon films. Plus the plot of has some weird similarities with "Barbarella " (1968)

I was 15 and a half when the next one came out in 1980. Excellent reaction to a great movie. Just a bit of back round about me. Marian & Joy Remember that most of the effects are created by practical means that creators use models with camera angles and positions. They were pioneers created the iconic special effects house, ILM, Industrial Light and Magic founded by Lucas. Besides ILM, Lucas founded LucasFilm that he sold it to Disney. Lucas still advises others on their Star Wars projects such as The Mandalorian & Book of Boba Fett.

This is not the first science fiction movie... In fact, some would hesitate to call this science fiction.. They would call it a space opera. But anyway... You can look to 1902's A Trip To The Moon... or 1927's Metropolis for some very early science fiction cinema. The design of C3PO is inspired by a robot character in Metropolis. George Lucas was inspired by Flash Gordon adventure serials when he made Star Wars.. Serials are short, episodic films that were shown before a movie. Before Lucas made Star Wars, he made THX 1138 in 1971, another science fiction film. His goal with Star Wars was to make a film like the classic Flash Gordon adventure serials but with an epic story and modern (even ground-breaking) visual effects. He was successful and changed the way movies were made from then on.

The thing with Lucas is, he's not just a story-writer, or even a conceptual world-builder, though he is these things. He's also a special effects guy, a _physical_ world-builder, a producer who knows the production process from the storyboard to the manual work. He thought he couldn't properly produce the plans he had for the beginning of his story - episodes one to three - without developing his production techniques first, hence filming episodes four to six. Lucasfilms revolutionized many techniques during the production of that trilogy. Eventually it took until CGI became relatively viable at the end of the -90's and then he really splurged on that with the prequel trilogy. 😛

Fun fact: 11:48 in the original Star Wars movies the scene between Han Solo and greedo "Han shot first." You going to notice a little junk cut in that scene because of that. But all true Star Wars fans know that it was on who shot greedo first he acted before think.

There were lots of science fiction movies before this, but most of them were B-movies, low budget cheesy things. In 1969, "2001: A Space Odyssey" came out. It was a huge leap in quality of effects. "Star Wars" was the next huge leap in science fiction effects.

This was amazing to see on the big screen when it first came out. I was about sixteen and saw it maybe five times. Definitely not one of the first sci-fi movies but ground-breaking in many ways. Technically speaking, while this isn't the first Sci Fi movie ever made (Star Trek had already been a thing at the time and there had been dozens of sci fi movies), it was definitely one of the most important movies for the sci fi genre. Prior to this, sci fi was mainly looked at as kids' stuff. In fact, Sir Alec Guiness, the guy who played Obi Wan, was kind of embarrassed to be a part of it. The movie itself only had $11 million to work with, which would be about $57 million today (not that much for most movies). Everyone thought this project was going to bomb hard, including the creators. George Lucas was so sure of it, even though he had intended to tell a longer story than this, that he took a vacation on the day of the premier because he couldn't bear to see it flop. But this was one of the first sci fi movies to take the world by storm. It made$775 million, it was a cultural phenomena, people were camping out to buy tickets, they were seeing the movie then getting back in line to buy tickets to see it again the same night, it was unheard of. After this movie, sci fi was taken a lot more seriously by the general public. Never mind how it influenced a generation of filmmakers and special effects artists. I am speaking from my father's experience who actually lived in LA when this came out. His description of how it was still astounds me

One reason this film was 'episode four' was that it is an update or homage to the Saturday morning matinee serial stories of the 1930s like 'Flash Gordon' or 'Buck Rogers'. Each week, you would get a new twenty-minute episode, with a recap of the previous story scrolling at the beginning. This film starts _in_ _medias_ _res_ i.e., in the middle of the action, and so conveys the feel of being part of a bigger story ("Raiders of the Lost Ark" did this in a different way - it starts with the ending of a previous story we didn't see (about the jungle idol) and goes from there). Lucas undermined this in Episode One, to some extent, made years later. It too starts in mid-action, rather than 'feeling' like a first episode that starts with a call to action from the regular world.

12:26 When this movie was first made, Jabba was played by a fat human guy in a fur coat (on a hot desert planet!). George Lucas eventually re-imagined him as the giant slug-like creature while he was making the 3rd movie (Return of the Jedi). This scene was actually cut from the original release of the movie, and was only added back in with the final version of Jabba for the 20th Anniversary Special Edition of Star Wars. That's why the choreography and dialogue in the scene don't quite match (Han stepping on Jabba's "tail" and referring to him as a "human being," specifically).

Both droids did actually have actors inside the suits. Actors Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Kenny Baker played R2. During filming Baker at one point was forgotten inside the suit and stuck inside it while the rest of the cast went to lunch and also nearly was strangled when wiring that gave power to all the exterior lighting on the suit wrapped around his neck. Luckly neither incident was enough to get the actor to quit and he continued to play the role of R2 in all of the Original Trilogy as well as some of the scenes in the Prequel Trilogy when Radio controlled props or CGI were not used.

This movie in its original form was just called "Star Wars". Sequels were not assured when it came out, its success opened the door for the sequels. It was later retitled as episode IV a new Hope when the idea for the prequels came about. A lot of effects shots were added in 1997 for the "Special Editions", so any FX that look too modern for 1977, that is why. This might be the birth of modern sci-fi, or the movie that made it popular, but sci-fi has been around since the silent era. "Metropolis" is a good example. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" came out the same year, a Spielberg classic I highly recommend. And "2001: A Space Odyssey" came out in '68, its visuals were way ahead of their time.

To answer your question, science fiction films have been around since the very start of cinema in the 1900s. There were lots of sci-fi books made in the late 1800s and moviegoers saw sci-fi and fantasy films as a fun escape. Sci-fi got a huge boost in popularity during the 1950s, partly because of the mystery behind the atomic bomb and atomic energy. But Star Wars in 1977 was far beyond what any movie studio had tried before, and it completely re-defined what science fiction could look like from that point forward.

The first science fiction movie was A Trip to the Moon in 1902, about scientists taking a rocket trip to the moon. In the 1920s there were movies like Metropolis, and later on there were film serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, which are what Star Wars is party influenced by. It's also inspired heavily by samurai movies by Akira Kurosawa.

Leia is the princess of Alderaan. In the Galactic Republic, each planet would send a senator to the capital, but choose it's own form of planetary government. In other words, Leia's family would be royal on Alderaan, but wouldn't necessarily have any official position in the Galactic Republic. Although the empire is a dictatorship, the structures and memory of the republic have not yet been fully erased.

Star Wars was inspired by the serials they would show in between movies at theaters in the 30s and 40s. They were like a TV series with new episodes shown at the movie theater to encourage people to return and see the next episode no matter what movie was showing. They almost always ended with a cliff hanger. The Raiders of the Lost Ark movies were also inspired by serials, especially Temple of Doom. Serials did not have the budget of the studio films and were quickly done with lesser known actors. If you went to see a new movie chances were you would also see a serial without having seen the first parts, coming into the middle of the story. But the characters were sort of stock character types so you always knew who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. Star Wars is like when a chef takes a simple dish and elevates it to restaurant quality. It feels familiar and comfy but with mind blowing sound and visual effects and emotional satisfaction.

I THINK I can remember mum taking me to cinema, age about 2 or 3, to see this film! I was massively the next two, and still have newspaper cuttings from 1983 about Return of the Jedi. They were huge. We also used to buy the 'making of' books, which often came out before the actual films, and gave us loads of inside-info about the modelmakers, models etc. So peopel like Phil Tippett (who made a lot of them) and Ralph McQuarrie (whose art was the main vision for how Star Wars films looked) were heroes too. And we'd have sticker books so that school friends would avidly try to collect all the stickers. And I can remeber, age 9, when mum was schouting up the stairs to me on Christmas Day to come down and have my breakfast ... but I was jsut playing with an ewok village from Return of the Jedi (the third film) and loving it!v After the second film I even made my own crazy moon surface model with a monstrous space slug/worm that would emerge through air pressure with a satifying flop!
