A couple of things you missed: Darth Vader wasn’t aware that he had a son until the Emperor told him, even then he said “How is this possible”. Another hint in this regards was shown when Yoda sent Luke to fight the fake Darth Vader who turned up to have his own face. Nice reaction!
@GAdmThrawn
@GAdmThrawn Жыл бұрын
Darth Vader did know that he had a son. Remember, he knew the name Skywalker from the beginning of the film and had been hunting Luke across the galaxy. When the Emperor told him in the hologram, he was faking surprise, as he was already wanting to have Luke join with him just like what happened before (I'm not spoiling in case Mair and Sophie haven't watched the film yet). Of course, we can't tell that he's faking it because we can't see his face, but from his word choice, his pauses, and from the fact that he was already looking for him and the Emperor didn't know it. This has also been confirmed in the comics in both canons as well.
@chazo1367
@chazo1367 10 ай бұрын
Vader knew. Comics had Vader send Boba to Ben's old home on Tatooine and find out about the boy and received the word Skywalker, which means Palpatine lied about his wife and childrens death, so he goes looking for him. This recontextualised the whole scene here with it basically being the Emperor subtly calling Vader out; "I know what you know and you cannot hide anything from me."

When you compare this film to the previous, you may notice that THIS is the only film in which Darth Vader actually is a commanding officer over the Imperials. In the original Star Wars, Vader was actually just the right-hand man to Governor Tarkin. There's also an interesting worldbuilding question with the claim that Han's Tauntaun "will freeze to death" despite Tauntauns being, presumably, native to the ice planet Hoth. But the answer's actually quite simple: they must be diurnal creatures (active at day) who normally retreat to caves/burrows/shelter to endure the freezing nights. In comparison, there are many real-life species living in deserts despite that the hot sun during the day absolutely WILL kill them if they're out in it too long.

33:47 I recently learned this but the reason they cant track it is because since they are landed on it , the scanners apparently identify it as part of the star desteoyer. Like an extension of the ship. And since they cant see it and its the same colour its hard to pick it up with eyes from the windows of other ships
@Stratelier
@Stratelier 2 ай бұрын
Yep! One of the things people tend to not know about radar (and other scanning technologies) is that there's actually a _minimum_ range before they can meaningfully detect anything, because otherwise the signals reflected from close objects would dominate the readings.

On Sophie's remarks about thinking about these movies in a certain way because they are part of a larger series, I think it's worth pointing out that this is a more modern perspective on film series that's really only gained traction in the past twenty years or so, with the obvious most prominent example being the MCU. Modern film series are often intended to be extremely serialized stories where each movie is a piece of the larger story and appreciated as a larger whole. While obviously the aim is for each movie to be enjoyable on its own, it can be difficult to appreciate some installments if they become too over-reliant on being part of a series as opposed to being seen as a standalone product. But this method of film storytelling was much less prevalent in the 70s and 80s when the Star Wars OT was made. Lucas always wanted to make more than one movie, but he didn't know he would until it was obvious that the first one was a huge success. After that he knew he would get to complete this trilogy, but he still didn't write them fully cohesively, or at the same time. ESB was written and filmed without knowing many of the details about how RotJ would turn out. For one thing, they weren't sure if Harrison Ford would come back so they left room for him to die in between movies, which would have obviously significantly changed things. There are also references to the love triangle in the first two movies that were written in before they wrote the twist for Jedi. There are other things as well. Ultimately these movies were (and are) meant to be individual pieces of entertainment that in the end do tell a larger story, but they are left to stand on their own enough that you can enjoy them entirely individually. So when you think of A New Hope, it's not necessarily that the thought process was "this is the first movie, so we're going to focus on introducing the characters and setting up the larger plot." The first movie is entirely self-contained and works even if it's the only Star Wars movie that's ever made, with room for a sequel but not requiring one- because they didn't know if they were going to get one. Empire is somewhat crafted in a way that it's supposed to be a "middle part" of a trilogy, particularly tonally, with its dark themes and frankly largely unhappy ending, but still once again the major conflict is started and ended in this film. While it obviously builds on information from the first movie, it can be taken as "just another adventure in the lives of our heroes," that is meant to be appreciated on its own. The same is true for Jedi. The same is true for other movie series of the time, like Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Jaws, the Star Trek movies, the Superman movies, Karate Kid, Rocky, and many others. Each movie tells it's own story. It is a new conflict, and by the end of the movie that conflict is largely resolved. The next movie builds on the mythos of the previous movie, but is still able to stand on its own. Because much of the time you don't know if another movie will be made, and even if you do, you want the creative freedom to do what you want with it without being too tied down to a plan that was made earlier. I think this is worth remembering when you watch film series from before the 2000s (and even often in the 2000s as well).

I think Vader letting the officer live at the end was the moment he started to turn to the light. He finally had a face to face with his son, and the choice of the son or the emperor was already tearing him apart.
@Stratelier

It's a good theory. Anakin gave in to power, thus it defined how he (as Vader) views everything else around him. So seeing Luke choose (presumable) death over power would be a serious "that doesn't make any sense" moment to Vader internally.

I like that Sophie was inspired by Yoda, like so many before her. I was never inspired by movies in that way really, I just like certain quotes because they are catchy and badass. And Mair has got some real poker face, I hope I will too whenever I show Star Wars to someone like this. Aight, now I gotta watch some more of your reactions.

Lando wasn't a bad guy at all. He didn't cross Han and Lea and Chewie for money. He did it because he had no choice. He's basically the mayor of cloud city, and if he refuses, Vader starts executing citizens until he complies OR just offs Lando and waits for Han and captures him anyways. Lando took the best possible option available to him. Comply for the time being, while staying alive as long as possible to try to get them all out of the situation as best he could. He got Chewie and Leia out of danger, and got the citizens of Cloud City to evacuate. Lando was a hero.

For comparison, the Empire (evil or not) is nonetheless the legitimate government over the galaxy, so it's analogous to, say, federal agents from the U.S. government informing a city that they're setting up an operation to catch a known terrorist -- anyone else can either help them do it, or keep out of the way.

I think Yoda and Obi Wan didn't want Luke to go because if Luke found out that Darth Vader was his father, Luke would have been seduced by the dark side. That's why they wanted to complete his training first. It's pretty common these days where movies are expected to end in cliffhangers, but back when Empire was first released, it was a huge gamble and it had never been done before. I wonder if George Lucas didn't finance the movie himself, if the studios would have let him end the movie with a cliffhanger.
