Just remembered something about this film - this was the first movie I ever saw that had full surround sound. That moment when we first see Vader’s fleet - you can hear a TIE fighter off in the far distance behind you to your left. It sweeps around behind you and begins approaching you on your right before it finally comes on screen. That absolutely blew me away in 1980.

Fun Fact: Mark Hamil has said in interviews that his least favorite scene of his in the trilogy was cutting off the Wampas arm. He says that, while filming, he didnt like the idea of hurting whats basically an animal, feeling it was out of character for Luke. And during the shot, he says that he was directed and told that he was basically swinging the saber like a torch to scare the Wampa off. And you can kind of see in his movements in the scene that that seems to be the case. But he didnt find out until screening that, instead, it was cut to not only be striking the Wampa, but not even killing it. Just maiming it enough that itll die painfully of starvation without both arms. Not to mention the fact that the camera lingers on the writhing creature just enough to relish in its pain.

Haha, it's always funny watching reactors see Han say, "I know" for the first time. Harrison Ford tried the original "I love you, too" line, but after multiple takes he convinced the director that it wasn't something that really fit the character. There's a kind of remorse in it, too, like he's apologetic that (1) he's a scoundrel that's hard to love and (2) he's a scoundrel that's also hard to let go of -- particularly now that he's in this predicament he can't escape (a situation he probably gets into a lot...). Now it's iconic :)

Sound engineer Ben Burtt developed R2's voice, it's actually a blend of computer generated sounds and his own voice! He also created all the iconic sounds of the series, like the roar of the TIE fighter engines and of course, the hum and crackle of lightsabers. One of the unsung heroes of this franchise, for sure.

It was already known that Han loved Leia. He spent the whole movie trying to get her to admit her feelings for him. And right before he gets frozen she confesses it and he tells her “I know” as a way of comforting her. That he always knew she loved him and that he has always loved her. Perfect execution of that scene. It says all of that in just 2 words.

He was not comforting her, and it was not some solemn acknowledgement of their long-buried feelings - it was meant to be a cocky, Han-like response, to break the tension of what was a fairly dramatic moment. Harrison suggested that it sounded much more like his character than the standard, "I love you, too", and George Lucas agreed (thank God).
@Gab1s16

@@gibsongirl2100 doesn’t mean he was being cocky in a douche bag kind of way. He was comforting her. Hence the look she gave him after he said it. He had been pestering her the entire movie to get HER to admit her feelings! And when she finally did he responded with “I know” which is very much in character for him. But he wasn’t being a dick. It was to let her know that he did know the whole time. He didn’t need to say “I love you” back, his feelings were clear.

In the beginning, Vader's flagship was supposed to be a simple destroyer, but in black. However, it turned out to be very difficult to paint the model without soiling the lamps imitating the ship's lights. That's why they invented super-destroyers - simply because it was cheaper and faster to make a new model.

@@kaiielle I don't know if anyone told you but the scene with Han and Greedo in the cantina was changed. Originally Han shot him from under the table while Greedo was still talking. Greedo never got a shot off. The scene with Jabba was not in the film at all. The original scene had a fat human as Jabba. But was cut. They put in a CGI Jabba over the fat guy and added that scene. If you watch Han walks right over Jabba's tail. I'm not a fan of the changes that were made. There is a 'despecialized' edition made by fans that restores the original version but keeps the graphics and sound improvements. About the only thing changed in Empire was that the Emperor from Return of the Jedi was inserted over the top of the original 'emperor' who was an entirely different actor. That change is fine. I'm not against all changes just the bad ones :) Supposedly Empire had sound and graphics improvements but they are only noticable if you have a 10,000 dollar home movie theater.

I created a simple timeline for you to give you an idea of where everything takes place in regards to A New Hope. (Threw in some games as well which i recommend playing even more in my reply comment underneth) Year system explained below (Used by fans not used inside the universe of Star Wars as the galaxy has it's own calendars ranging from cultures and species) BBY stands for Before Battle of Yavin (Before a New Hope) ABY stands for After Battle of Yavin (After the destruction of the Death Star) The Old Republic Era (Thousands of years before the movies) Knight of the Old Republic - 3967 BBY Knights of the Old Republic 2 - 3964 BBY The Old Republic MMO - 3653 BBY High Republic Era (300 BBY to around 82 BBY) Star Wars Eclipse - Game is theorised to be set around 50 BBY to 100 BBY Prequal Era - Clone Wars (No Spoilers) The Phantom Menace - 32 BBY The Attack of the Clones - 22 BBY The Clone Wars Animated Show - 22 BBY to 19 BBY (Seasons spans the three years of the Clone Wars the conflict Luke mentioned in A New Hope to Ben "You fought in the Clone Wars?") Revenge of the Sith - 19 BBY (Final year of the Clone Wars) Rise of the Empire - Original Trilogy (Early years of the Empire) The Bad Batch - 19 BBY (Right after the Clone Wars and the formation of the Empire) Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 14 BBY (Great canon game recommend playing after you watch the Prequals) Solo: A Star Wars Story - 10 BBY Rebellion era (Formation of the Rebels against the Empire) Star Wars Rebels Animated Show - 5 BBY to 0 BBY (Set between these Five Years before A New Hope) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - 0 BBY (Set right before A New Hope) A New Hope - 0 to 1 BBY (Opening of A New Hope starts right after the ending of Rogue One) Empire Strikes Back - 3 ABY (Two years after A New Hope) Return of the Jedi - 4 ABY (One year after Empire Strikes Back) New Republic Era (New Republic Era starts in 5 ABY) Star Wars Squadrons - 5 APY (Amazing in VR) The Mandalorian - 9 ABY Book of Boba Fett - 9 ABY Alot of the old EU content took place right after Return of the Jedi such as the amazing Thrawn Trilogy of novels by Timothy Zahn consenting of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. These novels are still a great read even if the events aren't canon to the Disney timeline but Quoting one of my favourite Clone Wars Ahsoka Tano "There's always a bit of truth in legends". Dave Filoni who wrote Clone Wars and Rebels along with Directing and overseeing Mandalorian has brought a number of characters, places, and stories from legends into canon again so it's nice that these games and novels aren't forgotten about. There's also the Sequel trilogy but i decided to leave it out so you can go into these blind to when they take place. There's also events before Knights of the Old Republic but because you started the game i decided that it's a great starting point for the timeline as you have some insight of the game and the events of the Knights of the Old Republic but like i said there's alot of history before the game goes back thousands of years but unless you want to know about ancient Star Wars cultures and events it's not needed at all to understand the movies.

If you plan on playing any more Star Wars games i made a list showcasing some of the best games while also placing them in timeline so you can avoid spoilers for the movies. most of these games are non canon apart of Legends while the newer games like Jedi Fallen Order are canon to Disney Star Wars. The Old Republic Era Knight of the Old Republic - 3957 BBY Knights of the Old Republic 2 - 3964 BBY The Old Republic - 3653 BBY High Republic Star Wars Eclipse - Theorised to be set around 50 BBY to 100 BBY The Phantom Menace - 32 BBY (All games below are set in this year) Starfighter (Set before the battle of Naboo) Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (Follows the film) Star Wars Episode I: Racer Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles Star Wars: Obi-Wan (Set weeks prior to and during the events of The Phantom Menace) Battlefront 1 (Naboo levels) Star Wars Bounty Hunter - 32 BBY (Sometime after the Battle of Naboo) Clone Wars Era - 22 BBY to 19 BBY Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter - 22 BBY (Set before and during the Battle of Geonosis) Star Wars: The Clone Wars - 22 BBY (Begins with Battle of Geonosis but jumps to a month after the film) Battlefront 1 - 22 BBY (Attack of the Clones content) Battlefront 2 2005 - 22 BBY (Battle of Geonosis intro mission) Star Wars: Republic Commando - 22 BBY to 19 BBY Revenge of the Sith - 19 BBY (video game) Battlefront 2 2005 - 19 BBY (Campaign Republic missions) Rise of the Empire Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 14 BBY Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - 2 BBY Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 - 2 maybe 1 BBY (Six Months after the first game) Star Wars: X-Wing - 0 BBY Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader - 0 APY (The game begins with the Rebel Alliance launching an attack on the Death Star) After the Battle of Yavin Star Wars: Dark Forces - 1 APY (Opening mission takes place in 0 BBY) Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader - 3 APY (Empire begins invasion on Hoth) Star Wars: TIE Fighter - 3 APY (Set shortly after the Battle of Hoth) Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - 0 APY (First fifteen levels occur six months after the Battle of Yavin) Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader - 4 APY (Battle of Endor) Formation of the New Republic Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - 5 APY Star Wars Squadrons - 5 APY (opening mission takes place in 0 BBY) Mysteries of the Sith DLC for Dark Forces ll - 10 APY Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - 10 APY (The sixteenth and final level of the game takes place during Dark Empire, six years after Return of the Jedi's Battle of Endor) Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast - 12 ABY The games i would recommend are two classics Battlefront 2 (2005) and Star Wars Republic Commando (2005). Battlefront 2 is a third person fps following the events of Revenge of the Sith all the way to Return of the Jedi while Republic Commando is an fps which follows a squad of Commado's starting at the battle of Geonosis all the way to Revenge of the Sith. The newer Star Wars games i recommend would be Jedi Fallen Order and Star Wars Squadrons which is a great flight light simulator game where you take command of X-Wings or Tie Fighters with a fun story mode. There's a bunch of older games like the Dark forces series which i do recommend but the early games may be hard to get into. If you want a fun Jedi game i recommend Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight 2 both featuring a Jedi character with a best lightsaber combat to date. Should point out Jedi Knight 1 starts as a FPS until you get a lightsaber but both games can be played as an FPS going into first person while you use firearms and third person when you pull out a lightsaber.

@@kaiielle Happy to help. Playing Knights of the Old Republic should give you a great insight of the Jedi and Sith even if the game is separated by 4000 years from Episode l: The Phantom Menace you'll have an understanding of the greater universe plus watching the movie's you'll see how things have changed over the 4000 years. My friend watched the Mandalorian first before any Star Wars movies and loved the show so she watched the movies and was like "Hey that's from Mandalorian". It's interesting that your playing Knights of the Old Republic first may see things for the first time in Kotor then see them again in the movies like how you picked up Leia name dropping Dantooine the location of the Jedi Enclave in Kotor. Fun fact but Dantooine was the site of the first base for the Rebel Alliance "Our scout ships have reached Dantooine. Hello Kaiielle. Yes!! My favorite movie of all time. I'm glad you enjoyed it. There were two scenes on Dagobah you questioned. Here's my take on them. The first was Luke fighting Vader in the creepy cave. Yoda had just told Luke about using the force only for defense etc. In addition to that Yoda told Luke he wouldn't need his weapons in the cave. What did Luke do? He went to the cave armed to the teeth and struck first. Luke saw his face in the Vader helmet, which to me meant, if you continue down that path that's what you will become. So it was a test I suppose, a failed test. The second thing was when Yoda told Luke if you go help your friends you will destroy all for which they have fought. My take is Luke is the last hope to stop the Empire. He needs to stay and finish training with Yoda in order to accomplish that, even if it means sacrificing friends. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. (Thank you Star Trek) Oh and don't worry your bestie will get some love in the next movie!! 💖

Seeing this in the theater when it came out I was taken aback by the difference in look and tone from the first film. This movie is dark and tense but fast moving. From Solo's attempts to get the Millennium Falcon into hyper-space to Luke's Jedi training and then finally culminating in the light-saber duel we were all dying to see, the film never lets up in its pacing and excitement. The few quiet moments in the film are mere seconds long. The first film, the original theatrical version, was a unique construction of extraordinary vision, very limited budget and a near complete re-working of the script performed in the editing booth. There's no way to make that intentionally happen again. That's why the first Star Wars film will always stand alone as a work of art.

He may have looked like he was in the middle of nowhere, but Mark Hamill was actually in the car park of the hotel the cast & crew were staying at in Finse, Norway. The weather was so bad during filming that they couldn’t get out to some locations. So the crew set up the camera in the foyer, whilst the cast went out into the blizzards. The scar on Mark Hamill’s face is actually real. He was in a near fatal car accident between A New Hope & Empire; so bad that they had to use dental records to ID him. The severity of his facial injuries is apparent in the Star Wars Holiday Special (if you dare watch it 😂).

Great reaction. I am so glad you are getting to enjoy these movies! Fun, non-spoiler BTS note - For the scene where Luke is trudging through the snow before collapsing, the cast and crew were basically snowed in at their hotel, so they set up a camera in a hall at a back door, got the door opened and let Hamil walk out in costume and they filmed him trudging back to the door.

Adam Savage (formerly of Mythbusters) has many costumes he wears for cosplaying at conventions. His single favorite is his Chewbacca costume. He says everyone brightens up when they see him in it and he gets many many hugs when dressed as everyone's favorite wookiee. Also, he has a partially disassembled 3PO he lugs around on his back occasionally, check out his videos on Tested's KZfaq channel to see it for yourself.

Good job on the reaction vid. As others have said, the "I am your Father" moment, back in 1980, was the biggest. Also, this was the start of the practice of keeping spoilers from leaking while the film was being made. They did this by keeping only 4 people knowing the truth about Vader, George Lucas, the main director, Mark Hamil, and James Earl Jones (Vader's voice). Mark was only told right before the scene was filmed. David Probst, who was the actor in the suit, said the line as "Obi-Wan killed your father". Best documentary to watch for the original trilogy is "Empire of Dreams".

I was barely into double-digit age when this came out. I remember going to the theater with my parents early in the run and it was so crowded there were not three seats together. We had to sit separately and the only seat I could find was one row back from the screen. In an old-school theater, that was much closer to the screen than it is now. When the wampa first appears and attacks Luke, the image was so large and the sound so loud it scared me out of my seat and on to the floor! Thank you for allowing me to enjoy the movie again through your eyes. Subbed and ready to continue with you on your journey through Star Wars.

My impression of Obi-Wan's death in Episode IV was that he saw Luke and the others and knew that they would not be able to escape if they tried to interfere with the fight with Vader, so he sacrificed himself before that could happen (also knowing that he would be able to return as a "force ghost").

I’m happy that you really liked ESB. As a life-long SW fan, I can see that ESB is a better movie but ANH has been and will always be my favorite. I feel that while ESB is a more rich and dynamic movie, you can’t fully love and appreciate it without seeing the character introductions and the story foundation established in ANH. In a way, seeing ANH first makes ESB better than if you watched ESB without seeing ANH. The emotions, heart, and sacrifice in ESB is substantial and a testament to Irvin Kershner as the director. Also, the Luke/Vader duel is one of the best lightsaber fights in any SW movie.

Totally agree with that! In a series like this, the context from the first movie is always necessary. But it's still fine to like later movies more than the first ones. Like Harry Potter, for instance, the first movie is wonderful but doesn't come close to being a favourite of mine. I really enjoyed the Luke/Vader duel, it was so good! Thanks for commenting.

I'm not really sure it's fair to say "I like the first because it made the second possible." Of course you watch the first and then the second, that's the default experience. By that logic the first episode of a long running TV series is the best episode because it was the first. Even if that episode was lackluster by comparison or in its own right.

Not gonna lie, when I first saw this movie when I was 6 it was a game changing movie for me. I could not believe that Vader was Luke's father. I turned to my father and asked "He's lying, right? He's got to be lying" I distinctly remember that moment of shock and awe, that the hero could be related to the villain. It made me start questioning my own concepts of morality and I started looking at stories differently from that point on. And then with Return of the Jedi sticking the landing on this plot point, it just cemented this as one of the most important stories of my life. And that I think is part of the reason that Empire is the favorite among most fans. Not that people weren't already viewing morality in terms of black, white, and gray before this movie, but in terms of Star Wars itself, as incredible and important of a movie as New Hope was, Empire changed the trajectory of the series. It took the ideas of the first movie and expanded on them. It went darker, it went deeper. The entirety of the Star Wars Skywalker saga is contingent on that one line. It's the pretext for what happens in Return of the Jedi, it's why the prequels exist and Clone Wars exist, it's the start of why Vader is one of the best villain characters of all time. It's both so complex, and yet so simple

Folks have it so easy now being able to just go to the next film after watching this. Me and my friends had to wait years debating if what Vader said was true and what was going to happen to Han. It was rough but we had some cool toys to play with until the next one. By that time we were starting to grow out of our toys trying to be big kids. Funny how we never actually grew out of them and still love those toys.

"I know" is the perfect response. Leia already knows how Han feels, he's been very clear about it. Leia is the one who has been denying having feelings for Han. "I know" is Han telling Leia that even though she's only found the courage to tell him as she's about to lose him, that it's okay, that he already knows. He's not going to his possible death only having known her love for a few moments, he's always known. It's basically telling her in two simple words that she doesn't have to regret only telling him at the end.

Unfortunately, i needed glasses and nobody knew yet so all i remember is a big white blur on the screen which i assume was Hoth lol. Don't be too hard on Lando. He's in charge of Bespin and all its people. He had to choose between captivity for his entire city and Imperial occupation or his old buddy. Leia as a leader in the Rebellion would've understood but she was too busy being angry (she's used to sacrificing people, not being sacrificed). Love the channel!

Does anyone else think about Vader's emotional state after the falcon goes to lightspeed at the end and how Admiral Piett is sure that Vader is about to strangle him to death for failing to deactivate the hyperdrive, but Vader seems like, heartbroken that Luke got away, so heartbroken that he doesn't have the will leverage punishment against the person who failed him the most in the movie. Love your reaction to these. Saw Star Wars in ‘77 as a 13 yo. I would’ve loved watching them in the theater with you then. You would’ve geeked out big. Seeing the Star Destroyer in Star Wars ( I refuse to call it A New Hope as it is Star Wars and everything else is chapters after), but seeing that Destroyer come over your head on an 80 foot high screen was breathtaking. That first movie was the best because it was nothing we’d ever seen before. But Empire is my favorite of ALL the movies. This is the one that fills in all the character development you said you missed in the first one. We learn so much about the characters while advancing the drama. I have only seen “the 9” of the Skywalker Saga, my favorite being Return of the Jedi. I loved it when you got distracted by Luke’s arms, Luke always did it for me also. Han has the charismatic scoundrel pirate thing nailed, but Luke got that power, drama, & trauma, a character trope I just can’t resist. It also doesn’t hurt when that character has nicely cut arms 💪😜

One factor to consider for Lando is that he had to take responsibility for the well-being of the population of his city. If he didn't cooperate, the Empire would have just taken over. Obviously it was the wrong decision since Vader kept altering the deal, but he had his reasons.

Han saying "I know" is one of the best lines in the movie. It would have been out of character for him to say it back. It's funny how there's a really rigid line between generations in the reaction to that. Young people all have a problem with it, Gen X and above love it. Note that the turning point in the whole trilogy is when Leia hears Luke through the Force - that puts the team back together(ish) and things start turning their way. That's one of the most powerful uses of the Force theme. The question is why did Luke think to reach out to Leia, and why could she hear him? You know now after watching Return of the Jedi. Also, in the theater, the snow speeder scene was like riding a roller coaster - it really gave you vertigo. And there's no way to express what the twist felt like seeing it on opening night when you had no idea - it was the maybe the first and greatest twist of all time. Well, other than Rosebud. It's really a pleasure to see a reaction from someone who understands what she's watching. You know that you're obsessed with C3PO, right? I take it you've been ignored in your past?
