Snokes capital ship was god awful. It couldn't even catch up to the resistance and had to wait for them to run out of fuel. A ship that big is completely reliant on small fighters to keep it safe.

@Zelith Fang I actually loved the design and concept of that ship. It made so much sense in theory. Instead of relying on conventional planetary infrastructure for your empire, that ship was their capital city with millions of workers in it, factories, barracks, RnD, etc. The concept is brilliant since it fits the theoretical first order perfectly. Just like the rebellion, the theoretical first order was supposed to be a weaker, radical, insurgency-like faction, ISIS basically, fighting an assymetrical war with the republic, relying on surprise attacks and quick retreats. That ship was supposed to be their version of the rebels' hidden base, but they would never have to evacuate it like the rebels, they could be in constant motion and avoid enemy detection. Makes sense. It was clearly ststed in TFA that the republic didn't understand how a small rouge faction like the FO could have so much strength. That ship was supposed to be the answear. The resistance was supposed to be the expeditionary force of the republic sent to investigate the FO. The problem however is, that TLJ didn't really care about "making sense" or "being logical". The original concept of the FO and the sequel setup was completely abandoned. The FO is now the empire, the resistance is now the rebellion, and the Mega-class is no interesting strategic tool, it's neither the answear of the FO's mysterious strength, it's just another big ass superweapon that's ten times bigger than the last one, and the FO's strength question is completely abandoned, they might have two more of these things. The sadness...

I think they just inserted a superlaser to an already existing planet rather than building a new planet.

And that weakness was pretty well protected from outside fire and that's also why the rebels needed Han, Chewy and Finn install explosives inside to create a hole in the structure, so Poe could fly inside and blew it up.
