Even as a kid, Return of the Jedi felt “off”. Having a second Death Star (ho-hum), Han Solo becoming a bumbling wisecrack, the Ewoks, the multi-sequence final act whose tone was all over the place. There was no tension at all in the movie except the temptation of Luke by the Emperor. It turns out Gary Kurtz knew what he was doing. Return of the Jedi started to have echoes of what was to come in Phantom Menace.
@Gadget-Walkmen
@Gadget-Walkmen 8 ай бұрын
Han Solo was overall alright and well characterized overall and FAR from being "bumbling" as he was always a wisecrack. And the "multi-sequence final act" was overall done well as tone was consistent as the dramatic "final act" of the "final battle" which was overall done expectably well EXCEPT for those terrible ewoks. The best part of the film was the final confrontation between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor which was obviously phenomenal but everything else could have done ALOT better especially if they used Gary Krutz's original outline for the final resoultion for han, leia, and luke which would have been fantastic. And NO ewoks and NO second death star, jesus those things had NO place in that movie. But yeah I definitely agree with that final sentence that it was mainly lucas's problems that carries over into the movie and he really should have backed off.

I'm glad that you touched on this issue with Luke and Leia. Several Star Wars insiders have dismissed the notion that Leia was "always" supposed to be Luke's sister. One guy who worked on Empire stated that the Han-Leia-Luke dynamic was originally supposed to be a "Tale of Two Cities" type of dynamic -- where the "bad boy" would willingly sacrifice himself for the girl to be with the guy that he thinks that she loves and would give her happiness. However, the bad boy (Han) would survive and ultimately end up with the girl (Leia) while the other rode off into the mysterious yonder. This is sort of shown in the conversation between Han and Leia in ROTJ -- where Han says that he "won't stand in the way" between Luke and Leia. Unfortunately, someone decided to make Luke and Leia siblings. I have always thought that this was the WORST decision in the entire Star Wars universe (worse than Jar Jar and even the actors hired for Anakin).
@SpreadingtheMuse
@SpreadingtheMuse 7 жыл бұрын
Luke and Leia as siblings goes back to the original Starkiller scripts, where the royalty on the Blockade Runner wasnt going to be Leia, Luke's sister, but Luke's *brother,* Deak. This is the script Ralph MacQuarrie had when he did his original Star Wars art, such as that classic picture of Vader in a saber fight in the blockade runner hallway with some masked figure. Thats Deak (he also has his own action figure). In that script, Deak makes the hologram with R2, which he sends to Luke and specifically calls him "brother" and references Leia.

Chris M Lucas certainly may have changed his mind back and forth just to get SW off the ground in 1975,(and decided to kick the problem down the road til the next movie) but the "Adventures of Starkiller" script exists, and clearly says brother and sister. I believe thats the version that they made a comic adaption out of. I'll have to double-check

That is why i'm a trifle annoyed by the Episode 8 Title and if you wish avoid calling it Jedi you have to call it LAST and LAST implies Episode 9 or that Disney is going to stop making them (they wont). I've never really taken to calling Return of the Jedi "Return" that is something some people do - but it seems horribly revisionist to me.

90 Lancaster Not necessarily; it just means something coming back that had been gone for a while. But it seems particularly silly now to have heralded its return when just 2 episodes later they're on the ropes again. : / I liked Lucas' idea of giving the prequels titles that each reflected the titles of their OT counterparts. Obviously that's yet another one of the finer details Di$ney and Lucasfilm have ignored that made Star Wars _Star Wars_, and not just a mere impersonation. : P

Yes - Leia being Lukes sister never rang true. It feels wrong! And a 2nd Death Star in Jedi was a shocking disappointment to me like a punch in the stomach. It should have been that Vader took Luke to the Emperor and Luke somehow helps the Rebels get to the Emperors planet and they attack that instead of another Death Star. That idea of Vader wanting Luke to join him and rule the galaxy is really interesting - imagine if that was developed further.

Originally this was actually was Lucas also planned. During preproduction of the film Luke WAS taken to the Emperor on Coruscant. There was a lot of production design of that made by Ralph (just Google "ralph mcquarrie coruscant") What it ended on is time and budget. It was deemed to costly. If I remember correctly there was not a battle there at all. But similar "endor" battle with wookies of some other important reason. So the point on Coruscant was just the battle with Vader and Luke with the Emperor around, ending with Vader killing the Emperor. So that part of the ending was pretty similar, just the location was different and the whole Death Star, Space battle affair was not even present (as Kurtz found that it had already been done in the A New hope, which is pretty much true)

Some of the alternative ideas for ROTJ are interesting. But I personally prefer the way that it ended up. Han's death might have been interesting, but I think it may have created a problem for Leia's arc as we saw her character gradually bonding with Han more and more over the course of the OT; and it was largely that bond that caused Han to grow out of his selfish worldview (though his friendship with Luke also arguably played a role, albeit a minor one). Also, I would say there already somewhat of a ominous element at the film's end with the death of Vader and the funeral pyre scene. It's a moving and solemn scene. My problems with ROTJ are not with how the film turned out but with the changes that were made to later editions of it. None of the CGI changes to Jabba's palace were needed and I don't care for the "Jedi Rocks" song. Moreover, I hate seeing Hayden Christiansen as Anakin's Force ghost. Vader died not as a Sith Lord, but as the redeemed Anakin Skywalker, an elderly scarred Jedi Knight. It only makes sense to see Sebastian Shaw as the spirit of Anakin. All that said, I will say that I like the more solemn, galaxy-wide celebration ending of the Special Ed. over the simple "Yub Nub" Ewok party scene.

Son of a Sith I understand that people think having hayden as a force ghost is stupid, but think about it: Sebastian Shaw was way too old to be Anakin and the way he looked was not how anakin/vader looked without the mask so having sebastian wouldnt make sense in any way. I think hayden could have looked a bit older and more mature though The replacement of Yub Nub with Victory Celebration is the best change in any movie ever!

Mr Boost I prefer Sebastian Shaw for that reason. But i understand that hayden and shaw make 0 sense, because one is too young and the other is too old. I actually didn't mind them wanting to kill Han Solo in The Force Awakens, as enough time had passed that you could go along with it. I feel that what should have happened is that Han should have gone out in a blaze of glory instead of being given the death that he had; it's in Han's character as a swashbuckler to do something over the top, IMO. As for Return of the Jedi, I think either ending would have worked, but the happy ending works best because the feelings of dread/bittersweetness were given to us already with Empire.

Everyone knew Ford wanted a death, but he also wanted "gravitas" and emotional weight. Death by lightsaber wasn't a bad way to go, it was seeing him get chumped in such an anti-climactic manner that didn't serve Han's established skepticism. From what we knew, he shouldn't have let his guard down, even (or maybe especially) to his own son. The emotional weight ended up as "Wow, what a damn shame Han had such a shitty and manipulative kid."

That's true - in fact, the first movie with an Episode and title was actually The Empire Strikes Back, which when it first came out in 1980 caused a good bit of confusion as to why it said Episode V! Then, as drfenderfunk said, the 1981 re-release of Star Wars added the Episode IV and A New Hope.

I've been trying to find out if it was actually added in 1979 for releases in Europe etc - before Empire Strikes Back was in pre-production but after Lucas knew it was a success. I did read somewhere that it was added "before" 1981 to a select short run screening in America screening on or arround the anniversary date of the original release. There are so many cuts of these Movies (especially the ANH & ESB) it sometimes makes you think you are going crazy as you remember changes and then when you see it again it's not the same - example being when Han is talking to Leia in ESB to persuade her to leave Hoth. That is a whole different cut with different takes to the version I saw 1st - they also added a whole bunch of new scenes when it was shown on TV (especially in the hanger) and then again even more when it got 'specialised'. For example I've seen cuts when the snow troopers set up an E-web blaster and ones when they don't. I'm sure someone must have tracked them - I recall a lot of them were barely known about until people noticed some differences on the laserdics and 16mm Home movie "Film" releases. Heck a bet a lot of people don't even know that there was a 16mm Film release.

Also, the second Death Star works about aswell as that concept can, and has way more going for it than the surface suggests. The idea that the Emperor uses it to lure the Rebels into a final battle to wipe them out for good is brilliant. There's so many dimensions to it, not the least of which is his arrogance, but also his genius to lure them with an incomplete Death Star that they aren't aware has an operational Super Laser. If anything Jedi is just in keeping with ANH's hopeful optimism, and mythic family centered, heroic story telling. Kurtz's ideas might have been interesting, but Jedi stays faithful to Star Wars' core themes, and I think that's very important for a series that is so much about allegory and archetype. I honestly don't think Kurtz and Kasdan understood that, or cared as deeply about the Jungian undertones.

When building things like warships, weapons, even things like cars, once you've done all the research and testing to build the first one, building a second or a third is very easy, provided you have the materials. On top of that, usually when a government loses a major military asset like a warship, they don't just stop building them. They build them bigger and better.

I don't understand why so many Star Wars fans are wanting the films to become "darker and grittier" instead of offering the fun, awe-inspiring excitement that made us become fans in the first place. Have we become that jaded and cynical that we no longer want movies to appeal to our inner child? I still do! Even "Empire" was not really so dark or dismal. It ended on a downer of a cliffhanger but the overall film was still exciting and full of action and fun. True?

Ever since the late 2000s when movies didn't have the prettiest of endings, there was a certain standard that manifested from films like Batman, District 9 , Bourne films, Harry Potter and the likes. We humans understand that life ins't all sunshine and rainbows, and as a result of relating to darker and grittier endings over happy endings, more and more demand has risen now that we know what bitter/sweet endings look like. I for one loved the ending for ROTJ, possibly because I grew up watching the movie. But even then I find endings like these inspire humanity to strive to achieve an impossible goal even if it seems... impossible. Take for example the Lord of the Rings. An incredible successful trilogy that has a perfect mix of dark/gritty tones with a happy ending. A journey that felt so far reached that it almost seemed pointless to continue and it was incredible to see it unfold before you eyes. This is how I felt with Luke's story arc and why I feel ROTJ had a fitting ending. I would've hated Luke turning to the dark side or leaving with a cliffhanger. My opinion anyway.

There was also talk of killing Lando and destroying the Falcon in the final Death Star assault, which Lucas also vetoed. I'm actually with Lucas on both this and keeping Han alive. Star Wars was never a gritty war film where heroes died and we had to live with the pain. It was pulp action that made you feel good at the end of the film. Yes, Empire was darker and ended on a dark note, but then it also ended on a cliffhanger and happy cliffhangers don't work! In the end, I think it was good that Star Wars ended with all the heroes alive to celebrate their victory and the only bittersweet moment was Vader's death. Going all dark and shocking (saving Han only to kill him an act later) wasn't Star Wars thing. There are other stories for that kinda stuff. Just look at how the original film ended. Star Wars is ultimately about the happy ending. That's part of its positivity and what made it stand out back in the day.

" Star Wars was never a gritty war film where heroes died and we had to live with the pain. It was pulp action that made you feel good at the end of the film." Depends on how you see it. First one was clearly more like this. However the Hero's journey them was a strong thread. When it became a success and they started working on the sequel(s) Empire clearly was going in a dark tone as you mentioned... If going darker was a StarWars thing or not depends on where the last movie would have taken it. Clearly there is two directions here... The one Lucas and you prefer and the darker that Kurtz and many other prefer.. Rogue One is much darker. Is it still StarWars? Up to all to decide. And I think the answer will be different depending on who you ask right?

+90 Lancaster Indeed, 'Operation: Rescue Han' is the only part of the trilogy that has nothing to do with its primary Galactic Civil War arc, and only slightly touches on its secondary arc of Luke learning the ways of the Force in order to help restore the Jedi Order. It's basically a side story. I almost feel as though it should've been released as a separate short film around Christmas of '82, while the actual first act of ROTJ would then be filled with something else.

***** - That would have made much more sense. However, I don't think that many people know this. ROTJ makes it seem like the Ewoks defeated the Empire troops stationed on the planet. I remember reading somewhere that the original plan was for this to have been the Wookiee homeworld (with some of the mining and labor performed by slave Wookiees). Thus, the Wookiees -- who escaped slavery by hiding in the forests -- would have been motivated to help as an insurrection to liberate the enslaved Wookiees. However, according to what I read, George Lucas felt that it logistically difficult to find so many 7-foot tall actors, so he went a different direction (Ewoks). The Ewoks' motivation was even less plausible -- believing that C3PO was their god. I guess that it is what it is and we're left with these films and thoughts about what could have been.

Jedi has always been my favorite film, both in the original trilogy and in general. There a definitely a lot of blunders, from care bears err I mean Ewoks to the Luke/Leia semi-incest, to Han and Lando not dying (not mentioned in the video, one of the cuts that made it to test audiences had Lando die trying to escape the Death Star II), and even to the certain point of view mess, but Jedi always captivated me with its portrayal of Luke's growth, especially when looked at over the series. The Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon and the Battle of Endor were both phenomenal to me as well. I was born in '95. My parents had bought the '97 special edition of the OT when it came out, and I saw it when I was 4 in '99. Few things - first Leia was clearly being set up as the sister in the final minutes of Empire when she “hears” Luke. Also, while a more somber Jedi would be interesting, it would have ruined it. Walking out of what was at the time the final Star Wars movie ever would have sucked if everyone was sad at the end.

@Bauglir100
@Bauglir100 5 жыл бұрын
@Les Connards *Chewbacce isn't the whole wookie race. Did Ben, Luke and Vader controlling the force or having lightsaber implied every human did too?* First of all, don't even try using that argument. Being tech-savvy is one thing. Using the Force is completely different. There are exceptions, but almost every organic race in the Star Wars franchise is capable of having at least one Force-sensitive member, not just humans. But that doesn't mean all members of all races can use the Force. But with the right amount of training training, anyone--even an Ewok--can learn how to fly a starship or shoot a blaster. Second, the bowcaster is a well-established staple of Chewbacca's species. Even back then, before the Expanded Universe was...well, expanded upon, the bowcaster was considered Wookiee technology. So if they can build souped-up crossbow blasters, then they clearly have some sort of understanding of advanced technology. What do the Ewoks have? Spears, slings, and catapults. No blasters or even slugthrowers (guns). The Ewoks are primitive, the Wookiees are not.

No they weren't. At one point Luke wasn't even in the story and Leia was the main character. Don't believe anything Lucas says about what he had planned before the first SW came out, because that story changes more frequently than the FL weather. Lucas had so much help writing the original story it's not even funny. And Empire wasn't even his story, he and added stuff to Leigh Bracketts script, that Lucas asked her to write because he admitted that he sucked at writing. And after she died unexpectedly Larry Kasdan had to step in and fix up the crap that Lucas did to Leigh's story. Even Kasdan referred to it as more of an outline than a first draft. And Jedi didn't even have that much going for it when it was turned over to Kasdan. Lucas has told so many versions of this story that even he doesn't know the truth anymore.

Hate to break it to you pal but the Kurtz ending that he claims was never true, Kurtz finally admitted that nothing or no outline was actually written in a recent interview with Chris Taylor. Furthermore, the reason why Kurtz left Lucasfilm because Lucas took him off of Empire when he let the schedule and budget go crazy. He essentially had to fly down there and help get the film done. Just read JW Rinzler’s Making of books, those are proven to be as accurate as you can get, as said by the other producer Robert Watts. Kershner admitted that he didn’t talk to Kurtz much during filming of empire.

Watching the original trilogy while listening to Lucas' commentary reveals that he is almost entirely focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking. He is obsessed with the How of things, rather than with the emotional, Human Why of things. Listening to him talk throughout the films reveals just how differently he sees them from the way the fans do. In the end, it's probably best that he's no longer part of the process. As the artist who invented Star Wars, he has a strange blind-spot for why people love it. The prequels reveal that he has a totally different idea for Star Wars than the fans do.

The one thing I will say for Lucas is that he'd have seen the advantage of marketing the Space Craft of the Force Awakens and not just Kylo-Ren, BB-8 & Stormtroopers - which is what appeared on most merchandising. That no only led to 'Where is Rey' talk but it had me thinking - did you really just make a Star Wars Movie and the only new ships you put in it was a horribly generic resistance Transport ship you see for under 15 seconds and a First Order Dropship that isn't really marketable. Yet if you check the art book you can see they tinkered with other Tie Fighter designs (not just the same one twice with minor changes) and also an analogue of the Y-wing. Then when Rogue One came along they had a few new things but many of them were not heavily pushed either. and they absence of Droids & pre-existing Alien races (overall) in Disney Star Wars is bordering on the Bizarre now.

I think a lot of what Lucas decided to do was down to him almost having a nervous breakdown with A New Hope. I think he was sick of Star Wars with its demanding fan base and wanted to move away from it which is why he opted to scrap plans for a following trilogy as he was aware that he would most likely have to concentrate on that to the exclusion of whatever else he wanted to do. I think in the cheesy ending to Return of the Jedi and the inclusion of Ewoks (defiantly designed towards younger children - the first steps down the dark path leading to the evil of Jar Jar Binks the defiler) you can see a growing attitude that this was a genre best aimed at a younger audience. The point made about aiming for toy sales is a good one as it makes a lot of sense.

I think the OT is almost perfect as it is! Yeah, it only makes sense to make decisions that are going to benefit the film commercially but it is interesting to see that those original ideas are still somewhat in there with what happens in TFA. If Han had died there would have been no confrontation with his son n even though he may have made Leia Luke's sister to tie up loose ends I think the original plan was always to have Luke sort of infatuated with her at first n then have him mature n love her more in n unconditional platonic way! At least that's what happens in a draft of 'Empire'. But as n ending to the OT I think the Vader n Luke redemption is the most important thing n I think 'Jedi' pulled that off well enough! Richard Marquand also mentioned the ST saying that there was n ultimate 'intellect' type character that had been manipulating the events of the OT from afar n though some think he may have meant the Emperor it could also be the origin of the character Snoke!

Gary Kurtz was fired because he Empire ran way over budget and Lucas almost lost his company to his creditors. He had to fly down on set to get things back on track and restoryboarded things with Kershner. Members of the crew, including Kershner, Watts were critical of Kurtz. If you read the Rinzler Making of books, you will see that Lucas wanted Jedi to take place on Had Abbadon, Coruscant, but he couldn’t do it because he had budget constraints in the year of 1982.

I still think it's sad he never continued the films through the 80's and 90's and never bothered to make the pathetic prequalify that were all dire. I'm still angry with myself for only buying four figures when they were 50p each in the early 90's and then opening them! Some of the sealed figures in the shops that were 50p each are now worth many hundreds of pounds. Oh well.

I heard, during research for a costume I worked on, that Fett's role was going to be markedly different. Apparently, he had 're-joined' the Empire in order to have a better shot at Solo, who had, in effect, shamed him as a bounty hunter by escaping after capture. It was Fett who killed Solo during the Imperial base raid, after an extended fight sequence. How true, I don't know, but it's way better than being knocked into a sand sphincter.

Kurtz was actually fired before Empire was completed, so there's some sour grapes in his later recollections. Also, Gary was not a part of creating the final story for Jedi, but probably a part of some initial discussions. Howard Kazanjian took over as Producer (uncredited) to finish Empire. The reason that Gary was released midway through Empire is the film was over budget and behind schedule. Lucas self-funded Empire and Jedi thanks in part to the revenues from toy sales and other merchandising.

Lucas has said multiple times that the original Death Star wasn't supposed to be complete and fully operational until the last leg of the story; THAT'S why it reappears in ROTJ. Unfortunately, he had no idea he'd ever be able to make Episodes V & VI while he was still making Episode IV (Hollywood didn't do that sort of thing back then), so he took the series climax and used it as the climax for ANH, which undoubtedly screwed some things up a bit for the next 2 installments.

If I did ROTJ, I would have had Luke meet with his father sooner, and learn both the light and dark sides to see which to choose. Also, he'd train Leia and introduce her to Vader too. Eventually, Luke and Leia would both end up on the Death Star and try and redeem Anakin. However, as a plot twist, I'd have the Death Star 2 turn out not to have that passage in to attack it and the info they found be found to be false. The Empire would plan to use Death Star 2 to blow up most of the Alliance who was on the Forest Moon of Endor. However, Luke and Leia would redeem Anakin. Anakin would tell Luke and Leia to leave and they would. The Emperor would be angry but then Anakin would use the Force to blow up the Death Star 2, thus sacrificing himself and killing Sidious and defeating the Empire. (He always said that the ability to blow up a planet was insignificant when compared to the powers of the Force. It would be nice if someone actually used the Force to blow one of these weapons or space stations rather than just a proton torpedo.)

Star wars original trilogy is massively loved. And that is mostly because of the story and how the story ended for the characters everyone loved. Also, you have to remember that star wars were family/kids movies. So having a deep and semi-tragic ending for Luke would be terrible. People trash talk the ewoks, but at the time they were loved. I was a kid when the original trilogy came out, and I adored those cute but tough little suckers. I even had copies of their spin-off movies. Everyone loved the ewoks at the time. And they fit the movies perfectly. The problem is that now everyone who saw those movies as kids has grown up, and aren't as into stuff like cute cuddly teddy bear creatures fighting stormtroopers. Kids love that shit. So now it's all cool to say "I always hated them, they sucked", when in reality everyone loved them. Everyone loved pretty much everything about that original trilogy. Because this was also a time long before people would analyse and rip apart every scene and every line of dialogue, trying to put in some deeper and more complex meaning that was never really there, or picking it apart in ways that aren't strictly fair (because it's just a fun family movie for fucks sake). While it's interesting to see other plot threads, and different idea's that Lucas and co. were throwing around at the time, let's remember that we LOVE the original trilogy and probably wouldn't if they had implemented these other idea's.

Good video. I have always been a fan of Gary Kurtz's ideas and have always felt that his departure from the series really hurt it. Now, I like Return of the Jedi and think it is a good trilogy ender overall, but it is easily the weakest of the three older films. I will never, though, like the dumb Luke and Leia sibling idea. It was shoehorned and ridiculous then and it still is now. I wish Lucas would stop acting like his lame change of mind was "always his intent". Just own up to the fact that you didn't have it planned out, George. There is no shame in that.

Killing off Han would be dumb. They literally froze him in the last movie. It would be ridiculous to bring him back and then have him die 20 minutes later. At that point it would just feel like they're manipulating the audience's emotions. Vader did want to turn Luke to the dark side and overthrow Sidious with him, he was just quiet about it. It would be really dumb to say "I'm going to overthrow the Emperor" out loud. Bringing the Death Star back was fine. Sidious literally got rid of the Senate BECAUSE of the Death Star, so when the Death Star is destroyed... well, you need a new Death Star, fast. How else are you going to keep the systems in line? If you make the ultimate weapon and it gets destroyed, the smart thing to do would be to rebuild it, but better.

4:58 people dont' realise that, back in the late '80s and early '90s interest in the SW films had waned, except from die hard fans like moi. And you could pick up toys /kits / books/ mags, etc quite cheaply back in them days. which I did. it wasn't until the prequels came along that interest was revived. now you can sell some of that memorabilia at a profit, thanks to Disney.

It was clear that Lucasfilm would've done either Episode 7 or Episode 1 right after Return Of The Jedi but due to a long story short of financial miss-steps, it just wasn't the case anymore. I reckon thats why everything was quickly tied up in Jedi with Leia being Luke's sister and the Emperor being killed off currently rather than what was intended.

Ill just give my personal opinion on why I think Star Wars went south in the first place, I think the reason was that giant hermitage on what you mentioned- Skywalker Ranch. I heard that his goal for the ranch originally was for filmakers to get away from the hollywood system and have somewhat of an alternate base for filmakers like Lucas to collaborate. But as far as I could see, spending the money on a billion whatever dollar mansion was just not the answer. It caused financial problems but also division of great people within Lucas's team overall.

There was absolutely something different about Return of the Jedi, a lowering of both quality and acting.

I felt acting in Ep 4 is weaker than 6. Episode 6 had Vader's most emotional state in the entire trilogy, the emperor's captivating persona, and the best version of Luke we ever got. I will agree acting in Ep 5 felt more real compared to ep 6 however.

The special effects look the worse out of the trilogy. The acting is maybe slightly worse then ep 5. And most of the movie feels like filler.

Hey, you're right! Where the original characters ended up in _The Force Awakens does_ reflect their initial fates from this! Despite fans' valid criticisms over how it ruined their character development, it does make me feel a _little_ better now that I know this. Maybe this means that Kylo Ren really will tempt Rey to join him and overthrow Snoke like it's been theorized.

How to make ROTJ way better, Replace Ewoks with wookies. ditch the second death star. Have Han sacrifice himself. Luke and leia not siblings. Have Luke walk off into the distance.
