Great video! Really enjoyed the background and ideas about how this character could be used. A Ulic Qel Droma series with a more time to explore his fall etc. would be awesome! Also, I like your idea about a Star Wars fighting game. Base it around lightsaber duels and make characters really customisable... Maybe even fully custom characters as well as classics... Out of interest, did you play through Fallen Order?

Oh yeah. Fallen Order is one of my favorite games ever. I still can't decide which SW game I love more, FO or KOTOR II. Probably KOTOR II due to years of playing it and all the happy memories associated with it.

Hey Ben, man I gotta say I love it when you put together videos like this. I've never got into the comic book side of things ( not that I have anything against them ). After hearing what you have to say about them in other podcasts and such, now it interests me. Especially lately with talk about them doing something with Tales of the Jedi. Any thanks again for this I appreciate it brother and all the work you put in. I look forward to listening to you each week my friend. #heartofthejedi #starwarstimelineRULES

Ulic is one of my favourite Star Wars characters, and you did a really good job with this video on him. As for his fall, I think it could’ve been handled better. I think his fall should’ve been a case of him turning to the dark side as a result of being seduced by his undercover lifestyle while infiltrating the Krath. Falling into the role too much and eventually starting to justify bad actions. Instead of just Sith poison. You can still throw the Sith poison in the story, but make it more gradual, a slow burn. Although, given the time the authors had (24 issues from issue 1 to the last issue of Redemption) I think they handled it pretty well. Personally I think Totj should’ve been at least 50 issue long. I love Redemption besides the way Ulic died, I think his death should’ve been something similar to Luke’s death in The Last Jedi. Maybe if Tales of the Jedi is ever adapted into animated form we could see changes like this that would improve the story. That being said I love the comics as they really feel like the ancient era of Star Wars, especially with the aesthetics. Also fun fact, Tom Veitch (RIP) said that he had written an outline for Ulic’s fate, where Ulic would remain on the dark side and die unredeemed.

Oh wow, some fun details I had no idea about. Thanks for sharing Josh. But I do enjoy the way his story resolved at the end better than him remaining a Sith.

Ulic is a character that in retrospect is a counterbalance to both Anakin and Kyle Katarn. Essentially proof that the path to hell is paved with good intentions. He intended to bring down the Krath but lost his way. He teaches both Vima (and for a largely forgotten and unheeded) Anakin as well how dangerous it is to be a jedi and how a wrong decision for the right reasons is just as damning as a good decision for the wrong reasons. Still nothing is as chilling as when Anakin sees him in Jedi Starfighter and asks for his advice especially when you know what Anakin will become.

Uliq's redemption at the end of a tragic road is the ultimate reward for me as a fan. From a young idealist, to a battleworn veterain, to misguided fallen hero, to wise old mentor. His story arc is the most complete since Luke's journey in the OT.

Hi Ben (again lol), so I recently finished the Bane series and I asked you about other Siths etc. Well I have those other comics you told me about but I decided to go with the first comic to learn more about Freedon Nadd but it wasn't or hasn't been like that at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying Ulic's journey but I thought Freedon Nadd would be alive. Is there a comic or book that tells his story while he's alive or is it just hearsay stories/history? I'm really trying and wanting to go at this in a chronological way becasue I thoroughly enjoy it more. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. I get confused/aggravated that I can't find information beyond an article on it but there isn't any mentioning of what book or comic that the character is in fully. But people like you know where to look.

Freedon Nadd never appeared alive, precisely. Just as a ghost or from holocrons and such.
@starwarstimeline

What @mrmiffmiff said Freedon Nadd is used more in ancient lore and setting up the legacy of the Sith, not an active antagonist. I'm surprized you jumped straight o Ulic Qel Droma's story. I'd strongly advise to read in chronological order as Golden age of the Sith provides one of the best stories with Daragon twins that serves as a platform for Uliq's quest and enhances it even more.

Yeah, I never realized I should point it out he's part of ancient lore, not the main cast of the series.

@@starwarstimeline I do think that for some people starting with Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon can be an interesting way to go, since it came out first. It can be interesting to start there if you like seeing how the story that is Star Wars evolved from a Doylist perspective. Most people would probably benefit from starting earlier in the timeline, though.

@mrmiffmiff @starwarstimeline thank you guys so much. I have this thing about me that I like going down the rabbit hole of history and where things truly begin. When a character of interest is mentioned like Freedon Nadd, I instantly wanted to know more about him. So that's why I started with Ulic's story because it just so happened to be the first comic and I thought it would have Freedon in it. So thank you for clearing up his lack of appearance for me. But from what you're saying, it seems that the beginning is within Golden Age of the Sith, which confuses me a bit since his first mission is in the first comic. I'm about to start #5 of the Tales of the Jedi and was going to go into The Freedon Nadd Uprising. I just want to be clear on the journey here, so after I've read #5, I should be skipping forward to The Golden Age?

I appreciate your passion but where are you coming from with "woke" Disney writers that aren't good enough? Are there Canon books or comincs that you've read that point to "wokism"? What adult novels that you have personally read are you comparing to the Legends? They adopted Thrawn and even his henchman Rukh really well in the Rebels show, esp. considering it's a children's show. I don't see why it's impossible to do the same with TOTJ. Any new project could go either way. To me it's always about the talent attached to a current project, and the same creator like J.Favreau can produce both great (Mando) content as well as subpar (Book of Boba Fett). It's the nature of creative work.

@@starwarstimeline because they focus too much on the characters race , also David filoni doesn't understand the force very well as well the sith and jedi lore, all the characters do in Disney star wars is just telekinesis force lightning and jedi mind trick in the old eu the sith and jedi had many abilities and creativity with the force, the force is too weak in Disney canon, like darth vader say "the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force" David filoni isn't that bright when it comes to develop a jedi or a sith also he made those stories too lighthearted and family friendly for my taste.
@starwarstimeline
@starwarstimeline 2 жыл бұрын
Dave Filoni is an entirely different subject. There's an argument to be made he understands Star Wars themes better than most current writers since he worked directly for and was mentored by GL. My question was more in line with the current Canon books. Have you read any of The High Republic, or Claudia Gray's Master and Apprentice which goes to the core of being a Jedi, or Dark Disciple that shows Quinlan Vos tread on the verge of the Dark Side. What material have you experienced to make such comparisons to the old EU? Because if it's from watching angry KZfaqrs who tell you new Star Wars is the work of evil Disney corporation, you've been lied to. While not all new content is great, the adult novels are just as good as some of the best Legends books I read over the years and to discard them all as woke propaganda is both unfair and not factual. If I were you I'd stop focusing on the negativity and give at least one Star Wars book a chance. Who knows, maybe your mind will change. Or maybe it wont. But at least we could have a conversation then.

This is a waste of time. All you do is repeat same accusations I hear from angry KZfaqrs. I asked your first hand experience with new Canon books to see if you know your stuff. If you're old enough to remember the announcement of TCW show, you would know basic facts s.a. GL writing and producing the entire show, seen countles videos to understand GL controled the writing group and Dave Filoni was his personal pick. Your personal likes/dislikes have nothing to do with how TCW was made. Star Wars was never about what fans want to see. I'm interested in adult conversation, not vitrol. Here is a reminder who and why crated TCW. It's hard to believe there are so called "experts" who debate this on KZfaq. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7Snh65pna2wqHk.html
