After its defeat at Endor, the Empire struggles to maintain control over a fractured galaxy.
Seizing the opportunity, the New Republic launches a desperate assault to liberate the galactic capital.
The X-Wing pilots of Wraith Squadron rush into the fray to add support....
-----------
Directed by Christopher Parks
Starring Keith Cherry and Christopher Parks as Wraith One and Two.
-----------
This is a passion project of about 4 years in the making. I was a big fan of the X-Wing PC games as a kid and also really enjoyed Michael Stackpole's X-Wing book series. I’ve always had an interest in those New Republic adventures which is chiefly why I decided to make this short. I hope you all like it!
The primary software and workflow consisted of an animation pipeline in Blender that would be exported and rendered in Houdini using the GPU renderer Redshift. Final compositing was finished in After Effects.
Apart from a few kitbash sets, all assets were modeled and textured (Substance Painter) from scratch since the making of the spaceships is part of the fun.
------------
Check out Arya Moghaddam’s fan film “Star Wars: Destroyer” to see Keith Cherry as Wraith One again! I also wrote and did the VFX for that short.

But one thing makes me sad. We still have Disney's hyperspace jumps out of the atmosphere. This was not possible in the X-Wing book series. This wasn't possible in the OT and it wasn't possible in the Prequels. On the other hand, such huge changes to the inner-world rules of the Star Wars universe explain why Disney destroyed the expanded universe: There would have been too many logical errors, contradictions and plot holes. But of course it wasn't enough and so it didn't work. The whole blockade of Naboo from Episode I makes no sense if you could have just jumped out of Naboo's atmosphere into hyperspace.

Well... it's not really that impressive as it's 3D we are speaking off. In real life sure that would be sth because u have a real-life camera and humans that are prone to errors, especially the more of them u add. When u need actors, camera operators, audio technicians, lighting artists, makeup artists and everyone else to do their job almost perfectly its an achievement but computer will always have the exact same result. If Pixar would release a short movie as a one-shot that would be impressive? it would be interesting... and bit annoying as a cuts also tell a story but not particularly hard, computers always give the same results so there is nothing special besides bit different thinking while working on storyboards. Also, there are probably 4 hidden cuts in just first 30 sec.

@@sithazzazzin7329 Some slight artistic licence though like the close to planet jump. The Lusankya actually got lifted out by a repulsorlift cradle that blocked a lot of shots from groundfire before it powered up and flew out of atmosphere before jumping. The SSD Lusankya is the second ship of the famous Executor-class Super Star Destroyer. She was also known as the Executor II. She was stored under Coruscant's surface. Later during the war, she surrendered to the Rouge Squadron and became the only Super Star Destroyer in the New Republic service. She served until her destruction during the Yuzzhan Vong invasion. Her first appearance was in X-Wing: The Krytos Trap. The TIE Avanger was a project after the famous TIE Advanced x1. More advanced and better protected. It was almost on the same level of the TIE Defender, but cheaper.

@@TheBabyCaleb I agree, the SW universe had a lot of input from "unofficial" sources to the point where there are a lot of contradictions. It's not uncommon to establish an LLC for a project. It is useful for legal and financial reasons. It has no effect on how many people work there, it could be 1 person, it could be many. It seems Noble Engine is a game engine that would like to be part of future projects. A limited liability corporation would be particularly useful for a fan film project that may be subject to copyrights and potential lawsuits. To protect the individuals, hence the "limited liability" part. It seems Noble Engine as a game engine exists, but is for the PlayDate, so it is probably unrelated.

@@alexrose1ukv2 Believe ir it not, the TIE Defender was not actually nerfed quite as much as you'd (and I certainly did) think from TIE Fighter. My last playthrough of TIE, I conducted some experiments and came to a horrible realisation - the tech room in TIE straight-up *lied* to me for twenty years, on both the T/D and T/A. In effect, it listed the 200% SBD shields (when counting only the 100% of everyone else). They actually only have 100 and 50 SBD respectively, even in TIE Fighter. (Which is why I realised you can take out a T/D with two advanced missiles, and you can't survive more than one advanced missile when you're flying a T/A - even at double shields, that's still split front and rear, so you only have 25+25 verses the missile's 60...) I more recently double-confirmed this when thanks to the Total Tie Fighter Converstion Project for X-Wing Alliance, they gave me a way to actually look under the hood at the game stats. I was a bit miffed about that, I can tell you...! Granted, the later games did nerf their speed and maneuverability a tad; but the belief they halved the shields was always my biggest gripe, and turns out that was entirely based on Imperial techroom propaganda. This has been your Pointless Star Wars Trivia for the day...

Also, Exegol wasn't written as a propulsion/lift problem, it was presented as a navigation problem, with the atmosphere being so interference-heavy that a ship's systems couldn't track her position and orientation without the reference point of the signal beacon to work from. So while a ship may have simply smoothly risen a hundred meters straight up, a ship's onboard sensors may be getting interfering sensor feedback that says 'the ship has been rolled 60 degrees to port, pitched up thirty, and moved half a kilometer forward'. YOU MY FRIEND ARE ON THEM! Of course I love the Jedi and Sith and any lightsaber battle between them but it was the Ships and Battles fought in them that made SW magic to a kid who grew up before the PT! I think people that were born during the period after they came out are unfortunately a little less aware of that. Everything about this is great! The graphics, the maneuvers, and even the details like having the astromech wipe his sweat away. Brilliant stuff! 👌 Truly top-notch. The only thing I had an issue with is the emergence of that super star destroyer. I understand the necessity of keeping it's construction a secret from the rebels, but would it not have been more believable to have some giant doors open, or maybe just have it jump in from space or something? The insert here kinda dropped my suspension of disbelief because I knew, as a viewer, that people live and work and operate in the city of Coruscant, even while this battle is going on. Palpatine maybe an evil bastard, but he and his moffs know full-well the extent of fallout that destroying those buildings would cause, especially to... what? Raise some ship into the sky? Ehhh... the PR issues alone would be a nightmare. Though admittedly, seeing it there was really cool. It certainly gave a sense of scale to the overwhelming power of the imperial war machine. In that way I respect it.

This fan film, although visually gorgeous, has its share of issues I once mentioned in a comment half a year ago, but those you brought up aren't as troubling as you seem to suggest. Judging from the personae of Palpatine we were exposed to in the movies, and every tyrannic regime, the safety of the governed population and the value of life have never been a concern for dictators and their servants. The outlook usually exhibited by these rulers is that the populace is a horse they ride, making a jade of it if necessary, taking every advantage of it to the fullest extent, even if killing in the process. According to the strategy of the Imperials, however odd it may look to me as presented in this film which I disagree with because I find it unconvincing, their decision to abandon Coruscant would only abet them in carrying out a policy of the scorched land. "If I can't have it, no one will". Why would they care about the destruction of lives they were inflicting?

This was actually a link to Stackpole's X-Wing books. The Lusankya was the Emperor's personal "escape ship", so technically if he had to use it, it would mean he would be close to not being the Emperor any more, so any collateral damage won't bother him at all but instead give the Alliance a giant mess to clean up. If interested, you can go read The Krytos Trap for the original version of this scene.

@@nickter745thebold8 I was referring to unnecessary color filters that make whole scenes mono colorful. Either everything has a blue, red or green overlay thus making it feel unnatural.

Man brought the image of Lusankya rising out of Coruscant's surface from the Rogue Squadron books to life!! That alone was spectacular. You are a living legend my dude!!

@commandermaverick1487 If you read/listen to the first three books, then this scene will make sense, in terms of the readers not being surprised.

Really nice work all around. Great camera work, great choreography, and really top-notch CG VFX work. You did a very good job of "sleight of hand" in post to create one five-minute long, contiguous shot out of that whole sequence. Nicely done.

I'm awe struck. You took one of the greatest moments of Star Wars history, the Liberation of Coruscant, and gave it the justice it deserved. Thank you for this beautiful piece of work.
