A comprehensive review of the Pittsburgh Automotive 6.25 gallon Oil Extractor #46149 (Harbor Freight). Perhaps my air compressor isn't big enough?

When using an extractor (Any kind) you need to warm the oil before extraction. It flows better warm and likely would vacuum out in a shorter amount of time. Unboxing mine today and will test out the time to empty.

Does anyone have any good ideas on figuring out a better gauge system? I have had this for over a year but would like a better way to gauge my oil for peace of mind! Thanks great video!
@starastronomer4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question RoushRS3. The system that comes with this isn't accurate. Perhaps someone can be of help. The only thing I can think of is making sure most of the oil is out. Then when you do another "oil extraction" you pour out the oil and measure it. Glad you liked my video.
@davesbgrdtrck4 жыл бұрын
starastronomer yah I thought of that too I just wish there was a more convenient way like the gauge was actually designed for! Hahaha
@Far2hip3 жыл бұрын
I used clear vinyl tape to replicate the gauge marks with black permanent marker, poured in 2 gallons of oil, and then laid the tape with the adjusted marks onto the tube over the entire length with my black mark at the fluid line as my guide. Yes, I can still see the red marks, but I know the black mark I made correlates to the red number just above it. Works perfectly. To test it, I poured another 1 gallon into the hopper and it hit the black mark just under the number 3 spot on. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

Nice video thx for sharing ❤ I’m wondering the oil is supposed to be at a minimum 68 max 158 degrees air pressure valve is supposed to be preset 110 max IT should have popped the release you said you were 130 psi, I’m thinking maybe the oil extracted tube showing the amount may actually be more accurate since oil expands when heated ?
@starastronomer Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Hot oil would flow easier than cold oil to a point. I don't think the "oil level" tube is accurate at all and oil being hotter would not make that difference. The best way would be to empty the tank as much as possible and measure what you poured out.

Keeps you from having to crawl underneath the car but my oil filter is on the bottom, so I don't really understand the advantage with my setup. I'm still going to have to get underneath the car to take off the oil filter

On my ram 3500 is a lot of oil, and it drains down with hogh flow, and it gets spilled all over the place. This tool makes it a lot easier and cleaner.

The flow raight is probably bast on watter per min
@kokkolino11963 жыл бұрын
So my question is do you keep the airline connected from the air compressor and let it supply air while you extracting the oil or you fill it with air and disconnect the air line? And refill every time the extractor tank empty’s?
@starastronomer3 жыл бұрын
Kokkolino 11 I keep the airline connected.
@kokkolino11963 жыл бұрын
@@starastronomer excellent I will too that way I guess there is a continuous supply of air all the time of use!! Thank you.

@santoshernandez21884 жыл бұрын
Take the quick connect off take it to a hardware store like ace hardware and let one of the employees know you need a 90 for the extractor add teflon tape when you put the 90 on that is made for leak proffing

Just my experience if I drop my pressure to 50lbs in it makes it pull more vacuum, and extract fluid much faster.
@starastronomer4 жыл бұрын
Will give that a try. Thanks John.
@blueridgerennsport3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to give that shot, though I might just install separate pressure regulators on my extractors so we don't have to be fiddling with shop air pressure in between each oil change.

Can it be used remotely. Can tank/pump be pressurized, then disconnected from the air supply, and taken elsewhere to be used. How long might it last using it this way.
@starastronomer3 жыл бұрын
MrLMJohnson No way. Got to have air flow continuously flowing to keep it working to pull a vacuum.
@MrLMJohnson3 жыл бұрын
@@starastronomer Of couse it would. The compressed air flows through the venturi fitting on top of the tank to create a vacuum in the tank, does it not? If a shut off valve is added to the inlet, it could be closed off after the tank reached max vacuum, thereby allowing it to be used remotely for a short period. How long a period could it be used remotely to suck up non-viscous liquid.

@captaintommysavoy27614 жыл бұрын
Did you heat up the oil? You are suppose to run the engine for 5 minutes before extraction. Hope this helps
@starastronomer4 жыл бұрын
Captain Tommy Savoy no because it was just new oil in a bucket. No need to heat it up. If it was still in the engine then yes I would make sure engine was warm.
