Would you do a video (or series) explaining different things you need to know how to do to be a good barista? I don’t know anything about coffee, I don’t drink it, but it fascinates me. I’d love to learn more about how to get the espresso machine calibrated, how to do milk art, opening the cafe, shutting it down, learning to make the drinks, etc. The series could be us, the audience, being the new hire, and you training us. You could even do different characters. A manager who teaches us the right way, and then the employee who’s worked there for years and will show you the actual right ways lol

The manager was fired my 2nd day there. We went without a manager for 2 months. So it was up to the baristas to train me. I've ended up becoming very good at food and register because it was easier for them to just leave me over there. But i haven't had much training at all on the drinks. When I have had 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there... by different baristas... it was never done the same exact way. One barista said she just makes the drink however she wants to and nobody complains so she doesn't care. Im studying the cards by myself and that's how I came across your channel. I was looking for training on how to do my job lol and saw your Starbucks training videos. Thank you for all you do 🙏🏻

7:10 *stops the espresso pull* hold up! Spitting a truth I found out this very week. I had a near break down (okay near is an understatement) because I opened and the closing crew had left me with....well, basically everything to do and I, like them, only had thirty minutes before my first person came in. That's also if the door to the store (won't name which one) doesn't open the doors five minutes early and people love making a beeline for the starbucks cafe when they can. At first, I blamed the person who closed for my crappy opening day. Then I took a closer look at the schedule and realized the only people he had to support him was my manager who is infamous for leaving early and a trainee who wasn't interested in learning the job. He has done a bad job since the beginning (he's been told, he doesn't listen for more than three days) but I can usually compensate. Not this time. I've now taken to preparing as much as I can before I leave, even doing little secretive prepping that my boss hates us to do because they are convinced that the closer can handle it. He cannot. He doesn't have that sense of urgency for one and two, he only has thirty minutes to close and he didn't have support until close like normal that would have made it so he could at least not leave as much for me to do. Crazy part is that the closers trained before and after him are better but they have urgency, but still. He's the main closer so I now don't care what my boss thinks. I'm prepping for him. I'm the last barista trained by the original crew still left and even the people I trained are gone. I've been all shift positions so I do know what to do to help the closer and I have been a near drill sergeant this week to the crew left. Most don't want to do much more than make coffee but they'll have to start doing more.

I was trained at Starbucks in 2004 and I never let the new standards change the consistency I put into a drink. We were trained very well back then when Howard Schultz was the CEO and they actually cared about their workers.

There is a study out, you can probably look it up, that compared beneficial antioxidant levels of over 100 brands of coffee. It recommended three cups of coffee a day (for health benefits) and it didn't matter whether it was caf or decaf. interestingly enough Starbucks was at or near the bottom because of the way they roast their beans. They still have the antioxidant benefits but at a level ten times lower than the average of all coffee tested. Medium or light medium roasts had the best levels in every brand but Starbucks tends to roast darker. Yeah, and I get it, I once quit a job because of scheduling. With the former owner we all had a steady weekly schedule, the new owner steps in and it was like whack-a-mole..

Definitely looking this up! Seems pretty accurate though. Local coffee roasters take their time, ensuring quality. I can't imagine how many bags of beans Sbux produces everyday...

This was a very informative video and I'm very grateful that you made this video. I am just now starting my journey into the Coffee making world and was plagued by the difficult decision on whether I should start with Starbucks or a small local cafe. After watching your video I'm so glad I decided to go with the smaller cafe, not because I think Starbucks is a horrible place mind you but because I know that if I as the person I am started with Starbucks as my doorway to the coffee making world I would've most likely crashed and left which would have greatly affected me mentally. Now that's not saying that the cafe I'm working for is perfect but considering that not only is it a new cafe branch that opened near my home but after listening to the difference you mentioned between Starbucks and a Cafe working environment, it made appreciate the opportunity I was given to learn at a place isn't putting so much pressure on me. So once again thanks for the video, this has given me more confidence and alot to think about in terms of my future steps in my Coffee making journey.

I am so happy to see that I am not crazy; I still work for Starbucks, but for a licensed store, so we can get away with some things that allow for flexibility. Still, the Hotel I work at wanted everything to be Starbucks standard. When it came to machines, it was a good idea, and the clothing policy was also decent. The problem was with the prep and cleaning, the overmanaging in many ways by upper management, and the lack of thinking things through. I have spent the last 2 and a half years berating upper management for their incompetency. Where it took them months to get off the old warming machine was massive, and they still have not upgraded the espresso machine for the last 6 years. I told them to change the machine in my 4 months, and I told them, "Hey, this thing is on its last legs; if you guys don't upgrade it, it's going to break more than 1 a month" Their response was that it's too expensive to change. Since then, we have spent 50 thousand dollars repairing both of the espresso machines. And they are only now looking to upgrade to the current Starbucks espresso model. All of these problems are the hotel management not knowing how to manage Starbucks or the idea of forward thinking. But we also face the incompetence of regular Starbucks cause they want us to be exactly like their other stores, with half the merch and supplies, half the baristas, and with machines corporate moved on from when I was in high school. I will say that 90% of my coworkers are awesome, and we have done well setting things up for the next shifts; since we were licensed, we start cleaning for the close 4 hours early, which allows us to sometimes leave in 30 minutes. Although that's still rare.

I will say as a night shifter it annoys me (but I understand it's for the best) that good coffee shops close so early. It often means I only get to visit them once every couple weeks since they're often closing by the time I'm waking up.

The structure thing is what really bothers me at my current job (not Starbucks but a bakery chain) there’s been times where I’ve been scheduled for 25 hour weeks back to back when I’m only on a 16 hour contract. Most people would think that’s ok except the whole reason I got the job was so I could set up my freelance business and look for job opportunities after graduation. Even though I’ve told them to limit my over time, I still can’t plan around my schedule cause they are always late giving them out and I could be working any day next week and not know. I can’t make plans with friends far in advance, I don’t know how much time I’m gonna have setting up my freelance business each week and it’s really frustrating. I recently moved in with my boyfriend and it’s great but cause of my out of wack schedule, I haven’t been able to spend a weekend with him since Christmas cause he works full time. I will work as many hours as you want as long as it’s consistent Edit: also remembered at the end when you mentioned tips, we aren’t allowed to take tips. Any change a customer tells us to keep, it has to go in the charity tub, and I don’t know if well the customers know that… I’ve had people leave more change than normal and I hope it’s not cause they think they’re leaving a tip, I hope they are just really generous to charity

As someone from Australia, we dislike Starbucks. We already had a good coffee industry. We love cafe coffee. Though I do agree that Macca's coffee isn't so great. And local cafe drinks are so much cheaper. We just want espresso not a dessert 🤣. The only place I've seen a successful starbucks is in the airports which makes sense.

The more I learn about coffee shops and Starbucks and just coffee culture in general, the more happy I am that I don't like coffee. Everything and everyone is so pretentious and also I pretty sure almost no one actually like coffee since the most popular drinks are basically milkshakes with a little coffee in them. It's all so wild to me.

Coming from a barista who’s worked both as well, I agree with pretty much everything in this video. The only thing I struggle with as a local barista is the pay and benefits 😞 the local coffee shops in my area can’t compete with starbucks pay (especially now that sb added digital tips). SB baristas are getting minimum $15/hr, even more with experience while local shops in my area start us off at 10-12/hr usually with no benefits. Did you struggle with this as well?

I get $12 an hour plus tips in Tennessee. It usually ends up at $2,000 a month after benefits and taxes are taken out. I have to have government housing voucher assistance because without a subsidy, I would be paying over half of my wages for an apartment. Even $15ish an hour is hard for one person to take care of everything alone. It's a jungle out here 🥺

My local coffee shop by far! In 2016, I started at Sbux at $10. 2017 bumped to $11, by the time I left I was a little over $12/hr. Chicago minimum wage is $15, but with tips at my local cafe I was averaging around $25-$28 an hour. More than 50% of my paycheck was tips sometimes. Regulars and customers at small biz cafes tend to tip more, especially if it's a mom & pop in their neighborhood that they frequent. Sbux customers don't tip very often - or at all.

“Starbucks is the McDonalds of coffee.” This is overtly the company goal, and I don’t begrudge from a business sense. McDonalds and Wendy’s have been creeping upscale, because of Starbucks and Chipotle. Starbucks on the other hand kind of has market saturation, so where can they go? Fast food breakfast and lunch. 😞 I really did want to become a knowledgeable purveyor of interesting coffee drinks, but it was just high volume and sugar in the end.

Starbucks is a corporate giant with processes and a culture that overshadows any delight of employment. No, I don't and have never - nor do I know anyone who - worked at Starbucks. It's just easy to recognize the culture of urgency and customer turnover reflects corporate goals. Achieving the correct temp and getting the coffee made right reflects small coffee shop goals. They know coffee-lovers will return to them while sheep will wait on a long line for a meh drink, given their processes and quality goals.
