I imagine this song playing in a movie or tv show when a character is having a breakdown of some sort, but by the end of the song they've realized that everything is going to be okay and as soon as the last "we'll be alright" comes on they've run outside and fall onto the ground in tears, but they're happy tears because they know that they're going to be alright.

Fine line is one of the most beautifully written songs I’ve ever heard, it’s just so vulnerable and honest. It literally means that there is a fine line between happiness and sadness. I interpret the line “put a price on emotion I’m looking for something to buy” as a metaphor, meaning he’s so emotionally drained and struggling to feel emotion that he will literally do anything just to feel something. To me “You sunshine you temptress” means that this person can be very pure but also very deceiving. The line “my hands at risk I fold” resonates with me so much. It’s a metaphor referencing to poker. When you don’t have any moves left you fold, or in other words you give up before you lose anything. What I think he means here is that no matter how much he loves someone he folds, because he can’t bare to feel the pain of losing them. He loves this person so much but he is too scared to get hurt so he feels that folding (leaving) is the only option. To me “Spreading you open is the only way of knowing you” means that the only way he feels like he can be vulnerable or close with this person is through sex. Towards the ends of the song he says “we’ll be alright” and that’s when the trumpets and horns come into play. It’s almost like the sunlight breaking through after the storm. That despite the darkness it’s going to be okay.

There's a different aspect to Fine line that Falling doesn't have. Falling doesn't have the glory after Fine line. It doesn't convince you that everything will be alright. Falling is just pain. It's just heartbreak. Fine line is acceptance and pride. It's determination and sadness. It's almost victorious. Fine line is the breath of fresh air after a painfully hard day. It's the first smile you have after a breakup. It's waking up at 8am tomorrow without anyone beside you anymore but knowing that you're probably better off alone than preoccupied with someone who always finds limitless reasons to hurt you and take advantage of your pain. "Fine line is better than Falling" is not an unpopular opinion nor isn't contrary to popular belief. People know that Fine line is better than Falling. But personally, I listen to Falling when I just want to cry. I listen to Falling when I'm disappointed or when I have noone to talk to. I listen to Falling when I'm in search of pain. I listen to Fine line when I'm in search of happiness.
