With the June Update we can now craft our own ammunition. We'll need Small Primers, Large Primers, Magnetic Diodes and Charged Diodes along with more typical resources to get the job done.
So put on your flashiest Lab Coat and hit the Research Lab. It's time to load our own ammo.

I did the Ammunition Research last night when the patch dropped. Here are my Tips: Check Ammunition Vendors in cities everywhere and anywhere including Civilian Outposts. Trade Authority was good also for finding the Diodes and Primers. If the vendors you check has the Magnetic Diodes and Small & Large Primers, but their entire stock everywhere. You will use them initially in Ammo Research and you will need them later to actually craft the Ammo. So it’s best to buy them all when you see them. For Research Crafting it don’t stack using Neuraljack, Synapsis, or other research buffs. So just use one, but Neuraljack is best. I think the other place in game to naturally find Magnetic Diodes and Primers are at planetary facilities where pirates are often at. If you see these light blue ammo looking boxes, pick them all up as you’re gonna need them and a ton to craft lots of Ammo.

Ammo availability is one of many issues that virtually disappears the longer you play. I know I accumulate ammunition at an absurd rate at level 150 / NG+5. In contrast, my starter characters can exhaust their supply quickly and are balancing ship upgrades and sometimes premium weapons in the early levels. I literally think twice before buying 5k in ammo at the earliest stages. Overall, this is a step in the right direction, adds a source of XP (that doesn't come from buying ammo) and potentially RP value.

I think that they should add the ability to build machines that can manufacture Primers/diodes at outposts as that would give synergy for both the crafting and building system. As it stands it can be tiered so that the more advanced component making machines require more ranks in outpost engineering. Only two reasons to do ammo crafting are A) I need rare ammunition that is hard to find/buy or B) I need alot of low end ammunition. Reason B is especially important since weapon damage is based on whether or not a weapon is semi-auto, burst fire, or full-auto and some of the most entertaining weapons go through ammunition at a ridiculous rate.

Happy we have Ammo crafting now. I build a "dump loot" storage outpost in the basegame and every NG+, usualy on Hyla II where I also harvest the surrounding system for resources for research and weapons modifications mostly. So, I always end up sitting on tons of resources that I never use and because I make so much credits with just selling all the weapons from freeroaming, I never need to sell the resources or craft for credits. Now at least I have some method to turn some of the resources in something I actualy use. Not that I am already sitting on endless amounts of Ammo already... (Scavanging 4, best skill in the game) but hey, can never have too many bullets for the bad guys 😁👍

With you on this. The amount of ammo I "just find" is insane when skilled up and wandering about. This is an early character issue, but I really like the option. I'm still playing with different ammo, but it looks like the economics vary significantly depending on the type and general availability. That is, something like 40MM XPL is a pain to find in the game, crafting is more expensive than buying but I'd happily do it. Other types of ammo are far more expensive and can I've found one that can be crafted for 15% of the retail cost (even with my discounts). For early character development, it's a fun new option for me.

Thanks, very informative. Now that we can craft ammo maybe we'll also get the ability to craft medpacks at some point. That would be even more useful. It's interesting how some ammo types are especially cost efficient to make considering how slow the weapons who use them fire and how much damage they cause per shot.
@kineer
@kineer 27 күн бұрын
I've only scratched the surface on the economics, but love the 'cost per damage' concept. For now, have noticed that some ammo is very inexpensive to craft compared to the retail options and other ammo costs more to make than to buy. The higher manufacture cost item was 40MM XPL, but I'd happily spend the time and credits to get more since it's scarce. Haven't looked at all of them, but I it looks like some thought went into that aspect.

Definitely different utility depending on your level and advancement in the game. My starting assumption is Bethesda makes changes first to attract new players or make the early game easier. They address issues for those of us already committing time later. The former is to stop early-abandonment. The latter is done to avoid fatigue and late-defections. We all come and go from games, but I bet the Bethesda team (and their Microsoft overseers) watch that early game time very closely. How many people "put down their fork after the bite of a meal" hits harder than the guy finishing the main course and suggesting it could be seasoned better. ;) I've definitely started on dessert myself so I have to think back to what it was like to just sit down and start. For now I've started buying all primers and diodes as I do other things in the game. They are stacking up fast. More vendors than I assumed have them and I'll likely have plenty on hand for my occasional crafting needs. I'm doing this on a Lvl 150/NG+5 so I really want to test-drive it with my under 20 character.

Honestly I've never bought ammo in the game except maybe once or twice at the very beginning, and I could have avoided that. This feature I just can't find a reason to have. I added weight to ammo so I'm selling it off all the time. Certainly don't need to make it. What I want, is to be able to take a mod off of one gun and add it to another gun of the same type. This is doable in RL, and even in FO4, yet here we have to make a new mod every time. :(

Depends on play style. With my second character I've been doing mostly city/settlement questing for credits to buy a ship (this is a "screw Constellation" run so I'm not using the Frontier, and the character is moral, so not allowed to murder people for their ship). So when I do have to do a shoot-n-loot, I'm chronically low on ammo, because my aim sucks and early game guns are crap. This will be GREAT for that character. It's very much a YMMV thing.

You should see my Digipick video, lol! ngl, a little insane. But yes, this vendor hunting routine is arguably un-fun. I distinctly remember Todd saying they took things out (like ship fuel) because they weren't fun, yet here we are. Ironically enough, the lack of vendor inventory for items like this pushes the lever toward pack-rat looting styles while exploring. That in turn is counterbalanced by limited inventory, but can be eliminated now. So many odd balancing points in this (and other games). I do appreciate they are giving us more control over some of them over time though.

After a quick test, you can take both Neurajack and Synapse Alpha. The entire med/chem isn't replace, but individual effects are replaced with the longest lasting one you've taken. For example, if you take "Synapse Alpha" first, you get "Research Projects required fewer resources for 10m". Let a few seconds tick by so there's only 9:45 left. Then take a dose of Neurajack. It will replace the original "Research Projects ..." benefit with its own 10m timer AND add the +50% bonus to Sudden Developments. The status from Synapse Alpha will be gone from your status page. So it looks like it replaced it. Which is effectively did. There's no need for Synapse Alpha to be listed on your status page so it's removed. If you take them in the opposite order you'll get "+50% chance of Research Sudden Developments" and "Research Projects required fewer resources for 10m" from Neurajack. Let the clock tick down a bit and take the Synapse Alpha. Now your status will show both chems as active, but the Neurajack will NOT show "Research Projects required fewer resources for 10m" any longer. It will just show "+50% chance of Research Sudden Developments". You will also see the Synapse Alpha with the one effect on resources. So it replaced that single effect with one that lasts 10m from the time you take it.

So what's the price difference in buying the materials for ammo. Versus actually just buying ammo outright?
@kineer
@kineer 24 күн бұрын
It varies by ammunition type. For some it will cost more to make it but that generally makes up for a supply problem, e.g. 40MM XPL. For other's it dramatically cheaper to make it, which makes it more economical to carry some of the "Mag-" weapons. They have 160 round magazine capacities which can run 5,000 credits per magazine to reload and they have rates of fire that are 300+. I can make 50 MI ARRAY at 15% of what it cost to buy. Once you advance far enough to be holding plenty of credits, ammunition cost isn't a terrible burden, but if you want 100+ rounds of 40MM XPL no amount of money in your account will force the game to offer you more. So it's a feature that will likely require people to play around with it to discover when it's helpful to them. This assumes the RP/survival twist isn't also meaningful. Different for characters starting out. Different for advanced characters that have access to all the weapons in the game.

My current view is that only some ammo is worth making. 40MM XPL comes to mind because it's limited in supply at vendors. The "MI ARRAY" ammo is 15% of the retail price so if you like the "Mag-" guns with huge magazines and hilarious fire rates, then those are easier to justify. Some ammo is plentiful while exploring POIs. Some is easy to buy in good quantities. In the end, the value of making ammunition will vary by player and play style. I haven't really looked, but maybe someone will find a way to farm XP with it, but I suspect not since they throttle the core resources.

For that reason and others, I'm always on the hunt for tips and ideas that [should] apply universally. Generally it's a great idea to support mod makers either financially or even just by downloading and offering feedback that could improve them. I also suspect there's an ongoing process at Bethesda that looks at mods and decides if specific elements should be part of the base game (or they are happy having them 'handled' as one-off cases through the Creator community).

Downloaded some of these… now no sound. On xbox one series x, did all possible solutions. Unplug, hard power off the whole shabang. I guess I will wait 3 months until playing again. If you look on site they are aware of problem… but damn!

StarUI Inventory, Workshop, and later Outpost. I'm still hoping they make it into Creations but haven't seen them yet (and didn't contact the author). So unfortunately, they are currently PC only. They don't materially (pun intended) impact the game, but the offer the spreadsheet style I like and let me sort.

since you probably on PC the Xbox community of your subscribers would appreciate it if you got an Xbox series X and played, tested your reviews on both platforms. Yes I know it’s double the work but also double the rewards. Just think of all the possible new subscribers and likes from the Xbox players (fyi: in case you didn’t realize are a much greater in number than the PC players) who immediately stop watching the video and tune out when the review is for PC only! Just a thoughtful wishful suggestion….

@@kineer You can stack one buff per category. So for example, Lab coat, Neurajack and Research Methods 4 all stack. But two chems, like Synapse Alpha and Neurajack do NOT stack. You can only get one buff for all chems

ngl, it would be terrible to have more excuses to play more characters in Starfield. Oh no, not that! ;) Also watching the Xbox Showcase triggered a few moments where I wanted to get an Xbox. I have an older Xbox but transitioned to PC as the 'little Kineers' got older. That said, I enjoy (?) the same challenges many do on the economic side. I'm just starting to see a few 'real world credits' flow back from the efforts here and likely need to get a giant hard drive to store all the video I capture. Xbox is on my list though. Funny, I might have finally seen why creators open up donations. I try not to rush into things like that, but it could be necessary for things that would help me make content useful for more people. I would do more Xbox content if I had the option. Otherwise (believe it or not), I spend a lot of time thinking about Xbox players. It continues to be my goal that the guides and let’s plays be applicable to everyone on a supported platform. I remember watching a specific BG3 streamer, noting he had far more companions in his party than the game normally supported and (even though I’m on PC). I wasn’t going to mod in that way and change the core game. I just tuned out. I deliberately avoid subjects I believe are PC specific even ignoring subjects like console commands AND Xbox specific glitches that can be useful to some. I think the only counter-example of something PC specific are the StarUI mods. They don't require a script extender and I still hold out some hope they will find their way into Creations. I rely on them to make my play easier. From my analysis videos you can probably guess that spreadsheets are important to me. "I think in spreadsheets" at times. I do not use mods that add companions, change capacities, etc. I think they change the core game and shift away from what Xbox players have available. Thanks for the comment. We'll see where this goes. Maybe I can work an Xbox into my future.

Cant they make primers and Diode craftable so we are able to Build outomated ammunition producing outposts? Would be a cool way to make the outpost Building a lot more interesting for more people otherwise it is just easier and fastet to Buy ammo. It literally makes getting ammo from crafting the worst Choice an completly pointless. Why should i invest time to buy primers and other resources to only craft a couple bullets? I can buy a lot more actual bullets at a vendor and wait 48h and do it again.

In my games, ammo is a problem that shrinks over time. Once you have stacks of credits, mainstream ammo is easy enough to buy. The 40MM XPL is still hit or miss. In my fast-path NG+ play through I buy that opportunistically for the fight at Masada (just because boom = fun?). It should be easier to buy the elements to build that ammo. Minor trade-off, but I won't complain about it. For other ammo, won't make much different. Without really trying, I end up with absurd amounts of 7.77 by the end. :/

Probably one of the most pointless things they've added so far. Its cheaper an easier to just buy the ammo instead of searching for 3 to 4 different ingredients to only get ten ammo per time.

Totally agree, especially as the crafting method seems expensive and long winded. It should have at least been ammo with special properties, as per F04. Missed opportunity.

Oddly enough, this is one of my more popular videos lately (in terms of views, comments, etc.). Rather than attribute that to my dubious talents and skills, I see that as a sign of what the KZfaq algorithm is doing with searches. In short, people apparently want to know more about it. I'll know more as the analytics get updated. Given that it was a small note on the patch notes page and not highlighted in the Showcase, it's interesting to me. I will also suggest that as I've looked a little deeper, the economics of specific ammunition types vary based on scarcity in the game (and maybe other factors), e.g. shoot me a note when you find that vendor selling 100+ 40MM XPL at a time. Making it yourself costs more than the retail price per round, but it's a trade off I'm happy to make if/when I'd like a few extra rounds on hand. I think 50 MI ARRAY was about 15% manufacture costs vs. retail price. Not sure why, but there's something going on behind the scenes and the Bethesda has structured this with some [minor] purpose. In the meantime, for developing characters it's a very nice option to scrounging ammo in remote POIs, carrying extra weapons just because you have that ammo for it. Over time, ammunition is a fading issue. Once we have stacks of credits or cargo holds full of loot to sell, the ammunition stacks up fast.
