Greetings, captains! I've said I would make a video like this for quite a while, so I hope this can be of help to you still. This is a basic overview of ship combat in Starfield, and it features the modded ship, Bad Omen, made possible by the DarkStar Astrodynamics mod by Wykkyd Gaming. This is the one and only mod needed for the Bad Omen, and it can be found on Nexus Mods AND the Creations Platform.

The biggest takeaway from this is how to use the thrusters the right way, I used to keep the thrusters engaged for a whole 180 degree turn sometimes which would obv kill my whole momentum and make me stop in space. Your boost cancel and 90 degree turns/partial turns let you keep momentum a lot more which lets you evade enemy attacks better

That’s the main thing that I do during combat to keep my ship moving and avoid missile fire. When used correctly, you can very quickly put yourself in a position of advantage against your target. Limiting your thruster turns to 90 degrees is especially helpful when you’re flying larger ships.

@@allenmacintyre3929 I play on PC, but I use an Xbox controller. Regardless of input method, it just means that you press the Thruster button immediately after Boosting.

Great stuff here…I have never used my thrusters much always seemed to get me in trouble…I’ve learned stuff today… thank you for sharing your knowledge. On the other hand I was hoping you would have shown the bounty you’d acquired lol. As always take care stay safe ✌️

Been intrigued by the Darkstar Mod (Xbox); only through your endorsement shall I take the dive; thanks! I love this build; remodeled my previous upgraded Mantis to this (it had my endgame comspike). In the opening video I saw how from certain angles the Omen looks like an X-wing!

It does for sure, not intentionally what I was going for but the resemblance is definitely there. You’re going to enjoy it! Really opens up the scaling of ship modules and lets you balance your builds to your taste. For NG+, it’s a huge and necessary improvement to accommodate for the difficulty scaling.

Just added the Darkstar Mod; amazing. What Bethesda SHOULD have done at the start. Since I chose the Tracker name of Mantis, having a Darkstar terminus on Denebola I-b is almost 'hiding in plain sight'😉

Personally, lighter saturated red on the engines makes sense since theres wear and tear from the heat to the paint. Makes it look more realistic in my opinion but still very beautiful and an amazing build

Those engines already have a wear filter, making some areas of that red look worn regardless of color choice. The whole thing being desaturated made the engines appear to be more used than the rest of the ship, like they were ripped from a ship in a junkyard haha.

putting the new shield almost inside the ship is a smart move, so ya shield wont be targeted most of the dog fights i just learn something today from this

I try to do that on all of my ships if at all possible, but just so you know there is no functional advantage to doing this. Your shield system will still take damage as if it was mounted to the outside of your ship. I do this mostly for RP and ‘cool factor’. Thanks for watching!

One thing I do occasionally for fun, but it can help with combat, is thruster orbit practice around the eye or any object trying to maintain the same distance to it. Thrusters only. Pretty fun. Switching to another target after losing sight/lock on one ship helps greatly too. Someday I hope to get good at combat with target selected and hold select for free spin view. Very difficult for me to pull off but the view rotating around to the target instead of ship orientation is very cool. Awesome ship by the way. Catch a smile out there. o7

Yessir, that’s a great way to get accustomed to alternating thruster/booster and when and how to use them. I would really prefer using dual flight sticks like I do in SC, but hey, combat in Starfield is still great fun!

@@WizeOldWizard I’m guessing you are talking about full on flight style joysticks? That sounds awesome. I check in on SC from time to time to see how it’s coming along. Can’t play it, not a PC guy (I wish). But the surface to orbit flight in that game is gorgeous. Have fun sailing the blackest sea. o7

You mean like a side-by-side comparison video? Not a bad idea, but I recently entered my first NG+ so it’s going to be mostly all new ships from now on. I’ll likely rebuild some in the universe that I choose to settle in but that’s down the road a ways.

Could be a side by side, or just an explanation of when you like to use the Vulcan over the Omen, or when the Basilisk or Scythe is preferred. You could even use old content while explaining you reasoning😊

That turning style looks like drifting and I am a big fan of that and dose putting thrusters on the sides of you ship like in a left and right direction help with cornering .

Unfortunately, the thruster arrays are just cosmetic. At least they have animated thrust firing that is synched with the movement of the ship, but they don’t increase performance at all.

So out of curiosity i took my Airion Omega out to serpentis and it felt over powered with all the weapons I used from the darkstar mod. Literally just pull the trigger once and boom they're gone. That's was on extreme difficulty.

I imagine that would be good for like, NG+ 50, but anything before that it sounds too OP. Might have to start looking for mods that increase enemy power.

I haven’t tried the DarkStar weapons yet. To me, at least in my original universe, vanilla weapons feel balanced. Especially when you have them all fully powered. NG+ is going to be a whole new ballgame though I think.

Great vide! I'd like to see a combat demonstration with a vanilla ship and can you console in a spawn of the starborn ships maybe? They definitely kill me on extreme before I feel like I can do anything. Thanks

While I don’t have a video like this using a vanilla ship, you can see me employing the same tactics in the Omen build guide, which is 100% vanilla. The key to fighting a group of three Guardians is to avoid as many torpedo hits as possible, so you must employ the boost cancel technique a lot. That said, I may very well put together a much more detailed and in-depth combat tutorial in the future, this one was more of a way to test out a new presentation format. The whole video was recorded in one shot including all of the voiceover.

I use both Darkstar and Avontech mods with quite a few others and you just have longer load times but I've not had any problems with them

I’m sure they work great, I’m just going to have to design whole ships around some of those parts because the design language of those parts is just entirely different than the vanilla stuff. I should be able to come up with some cool ships with them, just gonna need some tinkering time. Oh and an empty hangar.

The mod is called, get this… Catwalks lol. I get my mods from Nexus unless they are only available through Creations, since I play on PC.

I actually have a tangential question on piracy: how do you handle the standard companions hating you, what is that like? I guess they stay on your ship anyway and are just mad? Also it sounds like the bounty system (for avoiding bounties) is finnicky, so do you just reload saves, or pay off bounties, or not land on settled planets anymore, or do you have a consistent way of avoiding bounties?

I don’t handle the Constellation members hating me, they’re never on my ship anymore lol. As for bounties, the whole ‘last witness killed’ thing almost never works like it should. Which sucks. Big time. As for getting rid of a bounty, if I have to incur a bounty through gameplay, I just pay it. But I have racked up multi-million dollar bounties combat testing ships, and in that case I always save before committing mass elimination with the intent of loading that save when I have my footage.

Not possible, her Piloting skill is not high enough. Sam Coe is the only crew that adds that. For a while I had Sam on the ship, but got rid of him after I completed his companion quest. Somehow his power pip has persisted. If you don’t believe me, you can see other build guides that I have published that have the same exact crew assigned, and the only pip those ships have is Omari’s shield systems. It’s a bug. It’s a good bug, but still a bug.

I wonder if you'd be able to make an Endgame/NG+ Version of The Peregrine. Perhaps make it a Constellation themed ship using the colors white, bright red, and bronze/ orange? It doesn't really make sense that an organization like Constellation only has the Frontier when it's such a terrible ship. I mean it doesn't even have a science hab, or a workshop! Also, I'm loving your upgrades to the Vanilla ships so far, they're really gonna be fun as soon as i speedrun to NG+ 50 with Starborn Suit scaling activated

I am in my first NG+ and I did a complete rebuild of the Razorleaf And used Darkstar shield and weapons It took me about 45 seconds to destroy the Shroud bearer and its escorts Darkstar has other mods weapons and space suits that drop from NPCs giving you legendary weapons and armor from NPCs and the storage chests

It just means you execute a turn with thrusters activated. The ship rotates faster that way but it stays on the trajectory you were on when you activated your thrusters.

So i don't have any pirates left alive on the kryx system nor the key thereabouts because i've betrayed Delgado and choose the Sysdef; so total pirates annihilation in this area...and the universe is doing better in my opinion. So as the Deimos Staryard you propose to do Piracy, well i don't do that but for you and the taste of adventure i've tried it and i know now why the ship fight are not so difficult for me even on extrem difficulty...i don't have big level opponent, the max i've found is something like level 16, no more. Do you know why ? 🤨

Sounds like you only visit low-level systems. Go to Serpentis, jump from planet to planet. Fantastic and fun way to earn XP.

Awesome vid. So you use creations? Context, I downloaded this mod on pc but cant get it to work and cant seem to find a solution. Currently using Mod Manager 2.

I use mods, yes, but I use Vortex. My extent of MO2 knowledge is that it’s best for those that wish to use different mod packages for different characters. Vortex’s system for handling this seems to be much less useful. But, since I’m in the camp of choosing the mods that work for me and always using them, I’ve never found the need to switch to MO2. As for creations, I only install mods from there if they are ONLY available there. If it’s on Nexus and Creations, I choose Nexus every time.

@mannyo1657 that mod shouldn’t have any issues, it’s a background mod that simply enables other mods to work. I have been using that and several mods that require it for months with zero issues. If you join my discord server, you can post your modlist and we can try to help you fix it.

So this ship is impossible to make in a normal game? Doesn't modding screw up the game and achievements?

The Omen is a vanilla build, along with all the ships in my Vanilla Starship Archive playlist. But the BAD Omen cannot be built without DarkStar, due to the modules from that mod. But it is very straightforward and easy to use. It will lock out your achievements (unless you have a mod for that too) but it won’t ruin anything about your game. Most mods are quite safe, just have to read their descriptions carefully.

Play thru the game first and get your achievements Then go to NG+ and use the mods and believe me this mod is one of the best in the game right now

What is your experience with getting XP between the harder difficulties; be them space combat or ground combat. I find that there isn't much difference between say Easy and Extreme but it also depends on the planet level. The higher the planet level the more xp I notice getting (70 + as opposed to, say 50 or 55) but with the gameplay difficulty I don't see a significant difference. Would you agree or do I need new glasses...😜🤓

I would disagree. My difficulty setting net me a +49% XP gain, and that equates to over 1000 XP for each level 72 Starborn Guardian. That’s before the Well Rested bonus too, which would be another +15%.

I wouldn’t recommend this, you can Critical Hit yourself this way if your shields are depleted. I nearly popped my own ship this way.

@@WizeOldWizard Hrmm. I haven't seen that for some reason. Could be my own stats. I did notice this more when exploring though, on a planet that is high level, the Starborn are usually either 72 or 100. The 100 gives me more XP sure, but not THAT much. In space, if I have the difficulty at Extreme I would get my ass handed to me so I turned it down a notch.
