The Mass Effect series is the benchmark that most games aspire to reach the level of when it comes to implementing sci-fi settings in space, and though few games are able to get to its level, the recently released Starfield is definitely vying for that throne- which makes sense, given the sheer scale of the experience and the pedigree of the studio behind it.
But between the two, which one comes out on top? Given the significant difference in tone and aesthetic between the two games, as well as how both of them utilize their space setting from an actual gameplay and game design perspective, it’s obviously hard to draw one-to-one comparisons- but both do have legs up over each other in different ways.
Here, that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about.

Mass Effect without a doubt. Better characters, better setting, better story, aliens civilizations, and more focused. Yeah, Starfield is cool and all, but bigger doesn't always mean better.

Mass Effect by a landslide. Even my friends who only play sports games got hooked on the trilogy. The story telling was just something you rarely see these days.

When you think of sci-fi RPG, Mass Effect is still the first thing that comes to mind. Mass Effect is THE sci-fi RPG. Starfield is just a Bethesda game in space, you've definitely played it before, when it was called Fallout.

As someone who has played 20 hours of Starfield, it is my opinion that Mass Effect is vastly superior. Mass Effect has some of the most memorable and well portrayed characters I've ever seen in a video game, whereas in Starfield the characters are just ok. The gun fighting is FAR better in Mass Effect. The worlds you land on and explore are much more interesting in Mass Effect too.

Mass Effect series were all mind burning great scifi stories. They can't even be compared in "scifi" sense. Starfield is another story - looter shooter game which I'm also having fun with.

The characters seems more interesting in me since they’re aliens and their aliens isn’t as shallow as Star Wars aliens. I'll always go with Mass Effect with Mass Effect 2 as my 2nd favourite game, but I think it would be pretty cool if someone brought Expanse to the gaming world and yes I know there is a Telltale game currently out but I mean in either of these formulas I think it would lend itself to an RPG

Hell yeah. When I first heard about Starfield and how it was going to be more grounded, I instantly thought of The Expanse. But instead of one solar system they went with 1,000 planets (way to big IMO), which makes it less grounded

@sashioni I actually agree with you. Can you imagine a game where you could just have a few planets extra to explore and a couple of planets arguing the belt, Mars and Earth in this case. I think it would be amazing if they went in 1 of 2 ways though regarding character either you create your own character or your character switches throughout pivotal points in the game like imagine if you got to control Bobbie to go on a space mission protecting Mars, you got to go on a mission discussing the distribution of resources across the Belt as Camina, a Spaceship battle with Alex at the helm all while investigating a new threat the protomolecule as James Holden. Now obviously this wouldn't be the length of their missions and there would be a lot more to it this was just an example. Your spaceship would take damage so you would have to dock to repair it when Amos couldn't. Also you could actually finish the story in the game since we likely won't see a true end in the TV series as in a game it is a lot easier to age characters and there is so much to pull from even things that weren't explored in the show. After they do this story with justice and it was completely done they could maybe look at a new threat set up new characters like how Andromeda tried and failed but I'd say you could make this into maybe a trilogy focusing on the main story. It would also be nice to fit in Elias Toufexis somehow since he was in the show and plays 1 of the better characters in gaming with Adam Jensen

I remember playing mass effect and about 2.5 hours in I was like “yup this game is going to be a game changer” similar to Skyrim. Haven’t had that feeling with Starfield I’m 7+ hours in and my commitment to the game is rapidly dropping.

I think both of them do sci-fi well. The real question is, what are you in the mood for? Star Wars? Then go Mass Effect. Star Trek? Then go for Starfield. At least that's how I feel...especially since you have 3 of the main cast between DS9 and Voyager having parts in Starfield.

I agree. I preferred it over part 2. More for story, experience and lore. I'm not the biggest fan of shooters. A close second would have been Fallout New Vegas and then Fable 2.

This is hard to compare as Starfield is more of an exploration game versus a narrative-driven space drama. The world in Starfield is connected but the narrative isn't as intertwined as Mass Effect. The galaxy is ripe to explore but not in peril like it always is in Mass Effect. Pick your poison but you can't go wrong with either game if you're into space/sci-fi.

Starfield is an exploration game? You can't even fly your ship around plantets what are you exploring exactly? All you do is fast travel do the same repetitive gun play over and over, Starfield has all these galaxies to explore but still manages to remain lifeless. But the amount of places you can go, people you can talk to, and things to find is massive. Mass effects exploration is similar but not as expansive, and there are definitely more places to go in Starfield.

Gameplay wise, yeah, Andromeda was good, especially combat and the crafting system was also very good... Graphics are fine, but character models... well that is very debatable... World maps, are better than Starfield maps, but not by much, they are larger but they don't have too much meaningful things to find, the Nomad was an improvement in some aspects but frankly, if wasn't for the poor handling of the Mako, it would still be better have the Mako from ME1 (it have a cannon and ocasionally you could fight against thresher maws with it in some planets. The only real aspects of ME Andromeda that are really worth noticing are the combat and the crafting system, story wise is by far the WEAKEST game of the whole franchise, the characters are mostly all boring versions of characters we knew in the OG trilogy, and the story itself is BS, the main antagonists of the game couldn't be more idiotic than they come... literally, Bioware folks thought that fight religious zelots was worst than fight the Reapers, and by the way, is not like this new enemies are even scarier, they just look like some sort of biomechanical borgs... Although, Andromeda is still better than Starfield by a landslide...

I'm loving Starfield but Mass Effect is by far the better of the two options. Starfield doesn't come close to the RPG story telling of Mass Effect and it doesn't come close to space simulation like an Elite Dangerous. It's a fun game that appeals to a big part of the population but it's not going to come close to being one of the best Sci-Fi games ever which is something you can say about Mass Effect.

Mass Effect is better Starfield feels so much not like future space you fast travel to a different planet and it just feels like a different locale not an actual planet. There’s no real alien people, no alien beast that talk, and no worlds with lighting striking constantly, and land vehicles as well definitely Mass Effect but NMS does it all even better it’s just not an actual game.

Don't need to even watch the video. Mass Effect by a country mile. I tuned out of Starfield after 4 or 5 hours. I've replayed all 3 Mass Effect games multiple times.

I would have liked that Starfield instead of being one main quest, faction quests and fed-ex quests, that it would have been "path quests". I mean by that that it would let you choose between let say 5 paths when you start the game and then the sidequests you get are tied to that path. Meaning that if you start a second playthrough with another path then you have completely different sidequests. I think it would help the game be more focused and encourage multiple playthrough. By "paths" I mean let say you choose Pirate; then you get quests that fit with that and a greater focus on building your ship. If you choose "Buisness man" then you get quests related to commerce and building outposts. If you choose "Spy" then the same you get quests that fits with that. I love Starfiled but I feel at the quest level it is lacking a bit like in Fallout 4. There are great quests but also lot of Fedex stle ones where you get there only to know that you need to get there next and so on. Small quests like finding a book for a given NPC is boring. I think the game lack epic quests, one that get you emotionnal, make you think through their moral dilema. In short the game is a sand box too much open and I woould like it be designed to ba a bit more focus... like a mix between it and Mass Effect.

As a big ME fan but also a big starfield fan, I love both games, both are fun. But story wise I have to go with ME. Starfields story ain’t bad, I just find ME’s more intriguing, especially it’s lore. Starfield doesn’t have enough games in its franchise and isn’t old enough to have as much lore as ME. Characters are stronger in mass effect also but starfields characters come close too. Depth wise, gameplay and content overall I choose starfield though, loving starfield so far. Fun game.

Mass effect for me . Granted , it’s been a bit more fleshed out/established with 4 games and a load of characters along with great storylines so I may be a bit biased . Me personally call me Spoiled but I really need a 60 fps mode to even consider giving starfield a fair chance . I just can’t play this at 30 fps I’m sorry . I played stsrfield for a few hours but just couldn’t Get deep into it .

6 years game in ps4 and looks better than starfield and enemy AI in starfield is for laughs😂. And I forgot the ridiculous in 2023 loading screen to open a door😂.

Me in gamepass: Ohhh My GOD! Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Andromeda!!! I wanna download these! Xbox Advertising: And how about Starfield! Me: I dont want it... Xbox Advertising: Its free! Me: If that game even touches Mass Effect in my download queue I will cancel my subscription.

Starfield is supposedly an exploration game, yet somehow mass effect has a better sense of discovery when you get to a new location. I think Mass Effect's use of cinematics takes the aesthetic they followed to a whole other level while starfield just looks bland and lifeless. Im genuinely curious if skyrim had more cinematics than Starfield. I at least remember moments in Skyrim moreso than i do in this game. Those scenes of your ship flying through a star system in Starfield look like your ship is being piloted by an old person who goes half the speed limit. Grav jumping is just a loading screen after a half second light show. I like the grounded aesthetic of the game and all, i just dont understand why they apparently focused so hard on the performance in terms of fidelity and ignored some of the most awe inspiring moments that come with sci fi. They have npcs who talk about how dope grav jumping is and for you its just the loading screen. There's no epic approach scene to the spacestations just loading into the area after black loading screen. That whole flow is so janky I somehow had a better time staying immersed playing the original mass effect on xbox 360 with those god awful load times.
