Starfield is a Bethesda RPG that was marketed as the ultimate space exploration game. And Starfield reviews reflect that. Because Starfield gameplay is textbook Bethesda and the ultimate space exploration game is usually thought of as a space simulator like No Man's Sky. But Starfield is not a space exploration sim. It's Fallout 3 in space with a splash of Oblivion for good measure. And I love this... but it took a minute to get over the cognitive dissonance. This along with a proper radio mod that doesn't mess with stuff would vastly increase just random enjoyment (There is radio mod already but it breaks the StarUI mod and replaces some collectables). Make fun of High on Life because I do as well but being able to just sit and watch 4 entire movies in that game was actually really cool and I wish other games would attempt similar things. Especially because a good chunk of the real world books in Starfield are all public domain right? So putting them in wouldn't get anyone in legal trouble.

For real, its a good game that is really fun to play, but some things about it, are just bad, not bad in a way bugs are bad or a promised but non existing feature are bad. But more like something that was never promised, but you know it would have been possible to implement, and it would enhace everything you do in the game, but it just isnt there, thing... I mean, common, loading screens every time I enter my ship, a Building, a spacestation, a new orbit, a new whatever?! The even have some airpreassure doors in some areas, that hide the loading of new places, so it would definitlx be possible, just like minimaps, or spacetravel in a more emersive way. Its not terrible that they left out these things, but just simply sad. Especially because these things are normal in modern games, and most of gamers are usef to these things and cant overlook them. Its the same with police systems in open worlds since gta5. Every game needs it or people will complane, because they are used to that luxury feature.

@@erlm595I think one of the biggest differences in previous Bethesda games that separated them apart was the fact that you could also just technically leave behind dozens, if not hundreds of physical objects in a spot and they technically wouldn’t despawn. You can try it in other open worlds e.g shooting a hundred web shooters at a roof of a hundred floor building in Spiderman and the game would eventually despawn it. Night City would also have the same goons eventually spawn in the exact same spot if you give it enough time to revisit the area. Bethesda games would also have to account for individual NPCs in previous games like Fallout 3-4 where you could see them having some level of autonomy e.g actually going to bed during night etc. Played 60 hours of Starfield so far and Idk how much that the autonomous part actually happens in SF though.

I honestly don't know how I stumbled onto your video, but I'm super happy that I did! I'm about 40 hours in, and I'm honestly loving every moment of it! I know that I still have a tonne of hours left in this game because I am going at it at a snail's pace, and that's just the way I like it. Are there problems? Yes, but none of the problems spoiled the love I feel towards this game. I definitely wasn't expecting everyone to feel the same as I did about Starfield (we're all allowed to have our own differing opinions on pieces of media), but just seeing an overwhelming amount of people on the internet being generally down on the game made me sad because it felt as if my tastes were wrong or stupid. If it were just internet randoms it would be one thing, but it also came from people who carry a lot of weight in the gaming community, some of those are people I respect and listen to. As someone who considers himself to be a creative person, is all the stuff I make just actually garbage? Will I just amount to absolutely nothing at all because I don't know what is *good*?? Are me caveman really ooga booga?!? So, thank you for making me feel a little less alone, and reminding me that it's okay to love something even if no one else feels the same way. And sorry for little vent 😅 Also, your rant around 9:30 was probably the most confused I have ever felt, but I just let it wash over me as I accepted my fate! Definitely going to check what else you have! 😁

Don't worry, you're not alone. I love this game, too. A lot of the hate for this game comes from rage bait KZfaqrs/Twitch streamers like Asmongolde and Dunkey, who get extra clicks by hating on Bethesda games. People love to hate on Bethesda. Now not everyone who dislikes the game is doing it for clicks, but there's no doubt that negativity for games that aren't universally regarded as perfect sells, doubly so if it's a Bethesda game. That's why a lot of the hate comments you seem from ppl on the internet is disingenuous and vague, like "nothing but empty planets," "terrible writing/side quests," or "loading screen simulator." There are still people who like the game, tho. Reputable KZfaqrs/reviewers like ACG, Mortismal Gaming, LegacyKillaHD, Fextralife, Jayvee, David Jaffe (creator of God of War), Gene Park, Kinda Funny Games, etc. No matter what the Internet may pretend, the game is objectively not a disaster. If it was, it wouldn't have gotten an 80+ Metacritic. Truth of the matter is, the game isn't perfect but it's still a quality game. Some ppl won't like it, some people will. Simple as that.

As someone who was just expecting Fallout in Space I got into it immediately. Because that's basically what I wanted. To me what I saw of the game during some of the marketing was just a more grounded version of Obsidian's Outer Worlds. Both have the mega corps and space cowboys just Starfield just has more grounded sci-fi over the goofy space dramedy that was Outer World. So going into it with the expectations of Outer Worlds with a bigger budget and more realism made the game meet my expectations. Also the first ship does just feel like a fast travel mechanic but once you start building custom ships and getting attached to the work you've done the ships go from being small fast travel ships to giant Starships that act as your main home. The houses in game are your secondary homes. Your ship is your real home.

I think the problem with the "Seemless Exploration" expectation isn't about comparing it to other space games like No Man's Sky. It's about comparing it to past Bethesda games. In Skyrim yeah you might load when walking into certain towns like Whiterun, but you can still seamlessly walk between all the major locations in one long journey. Bethesda's worlds are usually pretty well connected and a lot of the fun can come from the very natural exploration element that arises from that. You might be travelling from Whiterun to Solitude or whatever but then you see a random cave or come across a minor village or some NPC that much more naturally and fluidly allows you to discover some new content. But in Starfield exploration is done purely through menus, and that completely removes that aspect of the game. Like it's not just about the presentation (though going through like 3 loading screens just to fly to another planet is annoying), it also removes a very core aspect of a lot of past Bethesda games. At best you can only encounter something at your destination, but at that point you're already where you're trying to go and that might discourage you from diverting your path. Assuming you even have anything happen upon arriving in the first place beyond just fighting some random pirates. And since everything is so menu-oriented, it makes it harder to keep track of the relative positions of locations in your head. I mean without the game explicitly labelling exactly where every star system is and what each planet in each system is, do you really think you could remember where they all are? Or even where the important settlements are? I mean hell the star map is literally just a bunch of white dots on a black background there's literally nothing to go off of. Not to mention that so many of the planets are just generic procedural generation with the same generic abandoned facilities full of pirates or caves or whatever on them. I don't feel the draw to explore random planets because I know that every time I touch down outside of a pre-defined location I'm just gonna end up in some flat relatively barren area with 2 or 3 generic structures visible within my immediate vicinity. Like if you enjoy the combat and the writing and such then sure I can get that, that's up to personal preference. And I will fully admit that many aspects of this game improve upon its predecessors. I like the new Persuasion system, I like the new levelling system, I even think that (Most) of the writing is leaps and bounds better than their other recent releases. But man Bethesda games usually have such a good exploration aspect that glues them together. That's like the entire point of a big open world game after all. And Starfield just feels like it falls so flat in that regard.

While yes, it is a Bethesda game through and through, there's something so uniquely *open* about it. When I picked up an audio log made by the leader of the big pirate faction, the first thought I had was that the character was physically OUT THERE somewhere, and maybe I'll meet them one day, or maybe I'll never hear of them again. A few moments later, I saw a movie poster touting "the true story of the battle of Niira" and again I thought, okay, Niira is a place in this universe, and I could go there right now. Similar things happen in Fallout and TES, but in Starfield when you hear the equivalent of a Whiterun guard talking about Hammerfell, you know that there's no map boundary stopping you from seeing it yourself. Losing the seamlessness of something like No Man's Sky in order to get that kind of magic is more than a fair trade, IMO.

The disconnect between what miserable KZfaq fudds are claiming and what Steam reviews actually have been (between 70-80% approval) has been interesting to say the least. I personally enjoy Starfield very much - even dropping my playthrough of GTA IV - because I didn't really know what I would expect. People kept claiming "Skyrim in space" (because that's what Todd said), but it really isn't. Starfield is the culmination of everything Bethesda has done up to this point. It's a refinement of all they've done, and while it still has its issues (based on how large the game actually is, it's to be expected), I'm enjoying what the game has to offer.

@@yasone7873 I didn't uninstall it because of the mechanics or graphics or because I didn't like the system. Dialogue, characters, logic - incredibly dumbed down compared to FO1, 2, 3, FNV, even FO4, and the cherry on top is the crappy agenda they're trying to shove down our throats from all sides. I'm in my years, I'm very well informed about the goings on in the world and I'm afraid that TES6 will be on the same level. Well, this is life, we're up sometimes, we're down sometimes.

The game really opened up for me after I snuck aboard a Crimson fleet ship sitting in the open, hijacked it and took it back to New Atlantis, then discovered the ship building, and the ongoing compulsion to collect all the desk ornaments. Also the food in this game looks amazing.

The biggest thing is that I feel like a lot of people wanted Starfield to be Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous, so they are meeting Starfield with expectations that it just can't meet or satisfy so they end up disappointed, my own expectations for Starfield was that it was a good RPG game and I was satisfied.

Starfield feels very much like Mass Effect, I'm actually crying tears of nostalgia for story rich space travel games! No Mans Sky is the equivalent of Minecraft in space due to its procedural universe and planets, whereas Starfield shares similarities to Mass Effect because it focuses on storytelling and following a legitimate semi-linear series of events. You're a big inspiration for me Habie, thanks for producing such amazing VR content!

@subhankarbaral9236 glad you feel the same! Bethesda spent 8 years developing this game, and honestly, it really shows! I've encountered very few game breaking bugs, and the ones i have encountered were merely cosmetic glitches. Overall, I'd say this is a great redemption for their company, considering the last few releases flopped to some degree

Exactly. Thing is if ppl thought about it deep down...they should have known it wouldn't be like NMS, at least with the features from NMS they wanted. You can't really mix the two, at least not yet, we simply don't have the tech to have the depth (shh) of a Bethesda RPG on a galactic scale, you have to have one or the other. Maybe in 2050 we'll get Starfield 2 aka single player Star Citizen with a Bethesda twist. Maybe by then we'll be 2 billion funding for Star Citizen with 40 years of development and it'll come out of Beta. It's like playing GTA exclusively for the cars and complaining the driving isn't as good as Forza. Or ppl who think Escape from Tarkov can easily be made into a huge Open world game with vehicles, etc like DayZ.

To me nothing is more satisfying than upgrading my scanner skills and slowly getting to see more and more different resources on the planets even though I do not really build outposts. Don't know why but it makes the funny part of my brain happy to see all the little colors. Also without saying too much the bottom of neon is the most terrifying thing I have ever accidentally fallen into.

To defend a small tidbit: You didn't have to open your map and set a course to go to Luna in your example. If you went up in space, turned on your scanner and clicked on Luna, you could press R and travel to there without any menu's.

Doing this has changed the game for me. I do all my travel with very little menus interaction. It feels 10 times more immersive and fun. Can't wait for mods - we will have near seamless interplanetary travel soon - it'll be fixed (still limited, but good enough to feel the immersive sense of freedom and control during space travel that we all want)
