My grandfather still barely knows who Kirk was despite its popularity and he had a television then. My mother’s parents disallowed her and her sister to even watch Lost in Space much less Star Trek. And I know many people, both older and younger who I’ve mentioned a simple Star Trek or Star Wars character or phrase to and they stand there saying that they have no clue who or what I’m talking about.

However, until Jaffa came through the Stargate, I think it happened in the mid 1990s, no one would have known the importance of the gate and no program would have been developed. Before it was apparent that the Gate was a travel device it would have been dismissed as a intricate round monument that had to be stored somewhere just like it was in the episode "Bad Guys" (Season 10, Episode 16) where the SG-1 team were mistaken for terrorists when they appeared in a museum.

Also, this is the way Google translated the phrase, which, I think, is pretty close to accurate. I'm not a fluent Russian speaker, however, and I certainly am not familiar with colloquial Russian.
