SpaceX is targeting Saturday, May 15 for its next Starlink mission launching aboard Falcon 9 from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The instantaneous window is at 6:56 p.m. EDT, or 22:56 UTC, and a backup opportunity is available on Sunday, May 16 at 6:33 p.m. EDT, or 22:33 UTC. On board this mission are 52 Starlink satellites, a Capella Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, and Tyvak-0130.
The Falcon 9 first stage booster that supported this mission previously launched NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station, ANASIS-II, CRS-21, Transporter-1, and three Starlink missions. Following stage separation, SpaceX will land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, which will be located in the Atlantic Ocean. One half of Falcon 9’s fairing previously supported the SXM-7 mission, and the other previously supported the NROL-108 mission.

Challenger was such a blow to the space program. I watched the Netflix documentary about it and had it been successful, NASA would have been sending one or two civilian non-astronauts on Shuttle missions every year. That would have led into more public support for NASA and higher funding to support going back to the moon and Mars by the end of the 1980s. Of course, we are barely catching that same steam now 40 years later because of the monumental setbacks that Challenger and Columbia were. I'm glad your grandma as well as the rest of the aerospace community is getting past that.

At about 22:54 the host emphasizes how amazingly rapidly the stage slows down: _"the first stage is now about 60 seconds away from landing, travelling at 900 miles per hour, twice as fast as a jet. And in less than a minute it will slow down to zero."_ (1) This is spoken a bit ahead of time --- at the time of the announcement the stage is still 90 seconds to landing and is travelling way faster than 900 mph. (2) The stage does decelerate very rapidly. The most impressive deceleration was actually just when the host spoke -- between 90 and 60 seconds before the landing the first stage lost 3560 km/h in 30 seconds (over 3.4 g of deceleration), comparing to 920 km/h in the last 30 seconds (0.9 g) just before landing! 1st stage T+ velocity altitude 7m00s 5462 km/h 28.0 km 7m30s 1899 km/h 9.3 km 8m00s 922 km/h 3.1 km 8m30s 0 km/h 0 km

The interesting part of this mission is that this was one of the rare occasions stage 1 telemetry AND on board footage were smooth from launch to landing. Note that from 100-60km the booster follows a ballistic trajectory, bearing vertical orientation by the entry burn. After the entry burn, the entire vehicle turns and glides up until 10km. At the exact second after transonic call out, the landing pad immediately comes into view as a white speck to the lower left of the left grid fin, and can be tracked from there all the way to landing.

I've noticed that. F9 nearly always hits the bullseye now, except when winds are strong (like on that mission where they pushed the envelope of conditions for landing). It'll be even more important to have accurate starship booster landings if they eventually want to capture those with a catch tower clasping the grid fins.

Yes, those are the fairings. You can see them falling behind the booster at about the same time on most launch videos. They are actually very flexible, and you can see them bend and wobble quite a lot on some older videos, but as much as here. My bet for this time is they went through the upper stage engine exhaust - see how the nozzle, booster and fairings are visually aligned on the upper stage video feed. This, plus lighting effects, would made them look like manta rays in space. And if I'm right, since they are in the void of space and can't dissipate the cinetic energy they received from the engine through friction, they continued enthusiastically wobbling until they re-entered the atmosphere.
